Hi again. Glad I could be of help. My dad's maternal great-grandfather moved from Wilkes Co, NC to Madison Co., IN, when he was just a young man. He lived with his future father-in-law as a boarder. His mother-in-law was a woman named Emily Plutina Cheek, who was born in NC according to records others have checked for me. I have yet to find out who HER parents were! She was listed as Miller when she died. Do you know if the death certificates list the names of the parents of the deceased? I was going to order a copy of her certificate to see if that was the case, but they wanted to know her parents names. If I knew that, I wouldn't need the death certificate! A Wilkes County historical source talked about the cemetery and Rachel Smith Powell lived with John Martin Powell until her death a few years after the Civil War-I'm presuming both of John Martin's parents are buried there and I would like to visit it sometime. William Evans Powell, her husband, and John Martin's father died several years earlier. John Martin did indeed marry Mary Owen (another Welsh name). There are a lot of siblings in that family and, as mentioned, I am descended from Mason and Clary who moved to Indiana. Quite a few people from Wilkes County moved to Indiana and most settled near one another in Wells County Indiana which is just south of Fort Wayne...........they kept contact with their NC relatives for nearly 100 years but those ties have drifted away, unfortunately. Many of the names in Wilkes County can be found in Wells County to this date and there is even a genealogical listserv for people with families in both areas! Anyway, I greatly appreciate hearing from you and will follow up on your message.
