He used the names J. Thomas and Thomas most often. He was married to Caroline last name unknown, born about 1839, and they had Nancy Emmeline Shumate in Apr 1860 and Thomas M Shumate in 1865. I am looking for Caroline's last name. James Thomas Shumate's father was John Shumate, born about 1815 in Virginia. Thanks.

Leary, J. Mark Lowe, and Ann Basnight. The workshop will be held Friday, Nov. 3 and Saturday Nov. 4, 2006, at Brier Creek Country Club, 9410 Club Hill Drive, Raleigh, NC. All three speakers are professional genealogists and lecturers. Helen F.M. Leary was editor and contributing author of "North Carolina Research: Genealogy and Local History." She is also Past-President of the Board for Certification of Genealogists. J. Mark Lowe is formerly Vice President of Development for the Federation of Genealogical Societies, Vice President of the Genealogical Speakers Guild and Past-President of the Southern Kentucky Genealogical Society. Ann Basnight has thirty years classroom teaching experience and is President of the North Carolina Genealogical Society. She was editor of the Tyrrell County Genealogy & Historical Society Journal and President of Beaufort County Genealogical Society. Lectures scheduled for Friday, Nov. 3: "My Taxes Were Due When? (Using Delinquent Tax Lists and Release Books)" - Lowe "Spotlight on the Neighbors: What They Can Tell Us and How to Ask" - Leary "Backtracking – From Present Residence to Former Address" - Leary "Wonder What’s Over the Mountain" - Lowe Lectures scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 4: "Colonial Court Day a Social Event" - Basnight "Nobody’s Daughter: A Case Study in Proving the Parentage of a Mysterious Married Woman" - Leary "Following a Case Through Court" - Lowe The registration fee includes lunch. Originally the eastern part of TN was NC until about 1785, then made the State of Franklin. 1779 Sullivan Co., (TN) was made from Washington Co. The rest (SW part) were Indian Lands that were west of Burke (NC), Washington (TN), Rutherford (NC) In 1788 the State of Franklin ceased (TN) was then made to TN. Wayne Co. was made from Washington and Wilkes Co. in 1785, Caswell and Sevier were made from Greene Co. I'm not sure that Carter County, Tennessee and Wilkes County, North Carolina were not different names for the same real estate at one point in time. This particular pair were married in 1829. HIS LAST NAME? If Benjamin met Patsy there he may have been of mixed race and therefore the reason for the migration to south west Virginia and NC.
