    1. Re: [NCWILKES] Grandfather Book
    2. Gail Rich Nestor
    3. Thanks, for this information and detail! I was glad to have the Grandfather Book abstracts to read from the bulletin, but I would also like to take a look at the actual entries when I visit Wilkes County next. Is this book in good condition? Has it been microfilmed? I just want to see it preserved for future generations. I have visited the Wilkes Community College a few times now and I am glad they have a bunch of county records on microfilm. It seems that the courthouse ships the originals to the NC Archives very quickly (at least as compared with Georgia, where all the old books are still at the courthouse, and only the microfilm of the pages is at the archives.). I understand the library in N. Wilkesboro also has some microfilmed records, but have not yet had time to see what is there. Is there an inventory of the microfilm holdings I might be able to see? I do have the published book list, but those original records are my favorite! I have several ancestors who died in the mid to late 1800s without a will, but I am hoping to still find information in the probate records (inventories, estate sales, administrators bonds, etc.). Thanks for any more information you can provide. I have to plan all my genealogy trips very carefully to make every minute of research count! 1. [NCWILKES] Cox family of Wilkes Co NC and Essex Co. VA
    2. Eddie Cox
    3. Hello list, I just found that my Cox family line may have come through and sent a few generations in Wilkes Co. It seems they moved down from Essex Co. VA around 1780 or so. I have Matthew Cox Jr., who died in Wilkes Co. in 1804. He was born about 1735 in VA. His father Matthew Sr. was born in VA in 1709. One of Matthew Jr. sons was Braxton Cox, 1781 to 1856. Matthew's wife was Lucy Dickerson, 1733 to 1812. This is not my direct line but I have proved connection to this line through DNA testing. I suspect my line is through a brother of either Matthew Sr. or his father William Cox of VA, who died in Essex Co in 1754. Is there any one of this list who may be researching this family or related lines? Thanks, Eddie Cox Belton, SC

    3. Permanent Roll of Registered Voters 1902-1908 called the "Grandfather Book" is located in the Register of Deeds Office in the Wilkes Co. Courthouse. The third column is the name of the direct male ancestor, (claimed by person registering to vote), to have been eligible to vote prior to 1867. The relationship was usually father, or grandfather. If person registering was eligeble to vote prior to 1867, it may read, voter himself, or just his name may be listed again. When name is the same, take note of the age of applicant, was he 21 years, or older in 1867? If he was younger and the name is the same, it means he has the same name as his ancestor. When this column is left blank, it is assumed the applicant proved he could read and write. The law was that a person had to be able to write, and read any section of the Constitution in the English language, or was the direct descendant of a person who had been eligible to vote pior to 1867. The next column is the state where the ancestor was eligible to vote prior to 1867. The next column is the date which applicant registered to vote. Registeration ran from 1902 until 30 Nov. 1908. 1. [NCWILKES] Grandfather Book
    2. Gail Rich Nestor
    3. Hi, I was reading back through some 2004 issues of the Wilkes Genealogical Society bulletins, and came across my great-grandfather's name. Can someone tell me (1) where the original Grandfather Book now resides (it is still in the courthouse?), and what the columns for the data below mean? Marcus L. Gilreath, 38, Alexander Gilreath, NC, 10-18-02 I know the first two represent voter's name and age. Is the third column for either father or grandfather (whoever was registered to vote in 1850)? Is the next column for birthplace of relative or for something else? The last column I assume is [19]02 - right? That's the date the first-named person was registered to vote - right? Is there anything else I can glean from this entry? If both the person's father and grandfather were prior registered voters, did the current voter just pick the closest one (i.e. father)? Some additional history would be great. I read the brief summary in one of the bulletins, but if there is additional information out in cyberland or elsewhere, I would like to read it. Thanks! We do know Benjamin was a Melungeon who were known for their multiracial backgrounds including Portugese, Irish, Native American, Turkish, African American et al. A recent DNA study indicates they were at least 10% Native American on average. I do not recall any other specific statistic as to their racial mix but if you check the Melungeon Association's web page you'll probably find more information. Mary's mother was allegedly a Gibson (aka Gipson) who were also Melungeon. The Phelps line, itself, is Melungeon. Benjamin's family and other Bowlings relatives, etc. are often listed in one of the Hancock Census as FPC (free persons of color). All of this certainly does not bother me so I am not offended to be from any race since all races come from one source if you could go back in time far enough. Personally, I believe Benjamin was either a legal an illegitimate son of Major John Bolling, whether ! his mother was Elizabeth Blair Bland Bolling or not. I have at least three lines which are of Melungeon origins such as the Wheeler, Willis, Savage et al. lines which includes several Native American origins mostly Cherokee, Delaware, Choctaw and Algonuian. Hope some of this information helps you and others in their research... Wa-do! (Thanks in Cherokee)

Mary Poe must of been his step-mother as he was born in 1804 in Wilkes, North Carolina. Mary would of only been age 2 according to her age in 1850 census Missouri (born 1792) If she had been born in 1783 she would of been 21 when he was born and could of been the first child. Marshall T could of been the oldest boy listed in the 1820 census of Floyd Co Kentucky with mother listed as age 26 to 45. However the 1800 Census listed Braxton's wife as beening over 45 with 4 children. I have run across a Braxton Mcquinn Francisco born 27 oct 1848 in Scott Co, Virginia. Was hoping to find Braxton's daughter listed in the 1800 Census (born between 1790 and 1800) as maybe the mother or grandmother to this Braxton, but their records seem to be complete and I cannot see any connection.
