    3. I have been to that cemetery in Traphill it used to be on the Richard Siddens farm; I to am decended from Jeremiah and Sarah Jane Adams Caudill I was lucky enough to be researching there with Sam Sebastian and Clayton Cox their was a stone for Sarah Jane but not one for Jeremiah but it was known he was burried there. I was decended from their son William who went to Lawrence Co KY about 1822. Jim Ovendorf Subject: Re: [NCWILKES] Joines Cemetery, Wilkes County, NC Thanks for your response. I have information that Jeremiah Caudill and his wife Sally Jane (Sarah) Adams were buried in the Joines Cemetery near Traphill; I believe they are the grandparents of Mary Lucinda Caudill who married James Martin Simmons. After James Martin's death she married Ancil Hillery Snow. My grandfather, Thomas W. Simmons is one of the sons of James Martin and Mary Lucinda. Taylor, daughter of John Taylor and Catherine Osborne of Wilkes County NC. Mary was born about 1829 in Wilkes County. She had two sons: John H. Taylor b. 1863, m. Laura Ann Dancy 1884, d.1945 in Ashe Co. NC. George W. Taylor b. about 1866 in Wilke County, m. Sarah Eller & Nancy Wyatt. She lived most of her life with her parents John and Catherine, but it I believe she was listed as a domestic servant in 1860 for Thomas Whittington in Wilkes County. Mary died some time after the 1900 Wilkes County census while living with her son George. Any additional information anyone could really help out.

    3. Connie, I found this marriage in a compilation of Wilkes marriages: license date 10/17/1888 marriage date 10/20/1888 Henry Childress (27) to Elizabeth McRae (18) by E. Holler, baptist minister at Nancy Fowler's wit: J. J. Moore and E. S. Cook The 1880 census lists the Elizaeth M. McCrary (age 9) you've probably seen. She is the daughter of Asa McCrary (age 31) and his wife Ciely (age 36). [It doesn't look like "Asa" in this census, but it is very clear in 1870.] Asa was the son of William McCrary (born 1825) and Jane L. Caudill. I descend from William's sister Elizabeth McCrary (b1831) who married James Madison Bauguess (b1830). I didn't find anything that indicated your Elizabeth (b1870) was a daughter of Asa, but it's a good possibility. I didn't find any McRaes in the 1880 Wilkes census, and this Elizabeth McCrary was the only girl whose age and name allowed her to be a candidate. Hope this helps. Jason Duncan http://www.webjmd.com From: kizydanzer@aol.com Subject: [NCWILKES] Childress, Childers Researching information on my grandmother who was the daughter of Henry Childress and Elizabeth McCrary. On the 1900 census they are found living in Rock Creek, Wilkes Co, NC. She had one sister, Celia E. I believe Henry's father was Stephen Childress and Margaret who in 1860, lived in Hotell, Surry Co. I believe that Elizabeth's parent were William L and Ciely McCrary who are found in Rock Creek, Wilkes Co in 1880 census. I too have melungeon ancestry and have poured over the Bolling debate for years,My Elizabeth Bolling Mayes was mots likely the daughter of Another Benjamin Mayes and wife sarah lathem and nota daughter ofJohn and Elizabeth Blair Bland Bolling as reported by many. We do know Benjamin was a Melungeon who were known for their multiracial backgrounds including Portugese, Irish, Native American, Turkish, African American et al. A recent DNA study indicates they were at least 10% Native American on average. I do not recall any other specific statistic as to their racial mix but if you check the Melungeon Association's web page you'll probably find more information. Mary's mother was allegedly a Gibson (aka Gipson) who were also Melungeon. The Phelps line, itself, is Melungeon. Benjamin's family and other Bowlings relatives, etc. are often listed in one of the Hancock Census as FPC (free persons of color). All of this certainly does not bother me so I am not offended to be from any race since all races come from one source if you could go back in time far enough. Personally, I believe Benjamin was either a legal an illegitimate son of Major John Bolling, whether ! his mother was Elizabeth Blair Bland Bolling or not. I have at least three lines which are of Melungeon origins such as the Wheeler, Willis, Savage et al. lines which includes several Native American origins mostly Cherokee, Delaware, Choctaw and Algonuian. Hope some of this information helps you and others in their research... Wa-do! 3. Hi Debi, thanks for this information. I just visited the NC Archives web site and I see they do have a handy PDF file with all the records (paper and microfilm) listed by each county. I have started to copy these into an excel file so I will have a list ready for my next research trip. I know I could just print the PDF page, but this way I can make notes beside each file with exactly what I'm searching for and I can rearrange the order as desired. Now I think I will make up a list of all the files at the WCC library (also online) and a list of what records are at the FHL library on microfilm. I already have partial listings for each. Once these three are all combined, I will post the complete list to this group. This should come in handy for all of us Wilkes County researchers. It could also potentially be listed at the Wilkes County rootsweb site. I have noticed some overlaps and possibly some gaps in the various records. It would also be nice to know what is held in original form at the current Wilkes County Courthouse. Maybe someone who lives in town could do some sort of survey of exactly what is held there. Hint, hint!! I recently did some similar surveys for the Decatur County, Georgia courthouse and posted them at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gadecatu/Decatur_Court_Records_Survey.html. For all of us out-of-towners, this would be very helpful! I should be done with the combined list of holdings for Wilkes County by the end of next week. The list will include holdings at: 1) the Wilkes Community College Library on microfilm 2) the North Carolina State Archives 3) the FHL library (per their web site) It would also be nice to have a list of all Wilkes County churches, their old/present locations, and when they were established - and (most importantly) where the records for each are held. This would be a much bigger project, I think! Thanks again and I'll be back in touch... 3. Hi Gail, My understanding is that the records office burned in the 1930's and some records that may be found will probably be in Raleigh, NC at their NC Archives-Library. I queried for an elusive ancestor who lived in the Wilkes area and was told about the fire. You can inquire for records at: http://www.onhgs.org/ncarchives.htm I haven't been there in person at Wilkes to know what they have available. I hope this helps you in your search. Debi A few more questions for those who might know: (1) Does the Wilkes Courthouse have probate files as far back as 1891, or are they already shipped off to the NC Archives? (2) Are the tax lists for 1891-1900 at the courthouse, on microfilm at the WCC library, or at the archives? (3) Are there any county directories for the time period above? My 2nd great grandfather, Rev. Alexander Gilreath, died after 1891 (he executed a deed that year), but before the 1900 census. I have been unable to find an obituary for him, and the church minutes for Bethel Baptist in Alexander County just state that he died, but do not give a date. I'm now grasping for staws! Thanks again for all the help! Gail Rich Nestor Smyrna, Georgia www.roots2buds.net

    3. Thanks Debra and Rhona for your suggestions. I too have visited the N. Wilkesboro Library and have found their printed collection to be good. I also spent several days at the Wilkes Community College Library looking up obituaries, wills, marriage records and such on microfilm and in the back room. Also with young kids, I find that I never quite have as much time as I would like! That's why planning well for these trips is so important. A few more questions for those who might know: (1) Does the Wilkes Courthouse have probate files as far back as 1891, or are they already shipped off to the NC Archives? (2) Are the tax lists for 1891-1900 at the courthouse, on microfilm at the WCC library, or at the archives? (3) Are there any county directories for the time period above? My 2nd great grandfather, Rev. Alexander Gilreath, died after 1891 (he executed a deed that year), but before the 1900 census. I have been unable to find an obituary for him, and the church minutes for Bethel Baptist in Alexander County just state that he died, but do not give a date. I'm now grasping for staws!
