    1. [NCWILKES] RECORD PROBLEM RE HARBIN SURNAME
    2. Joan Marie
    3. I have in front of me a copy of a microfilm document that is sure presenting problems. It is from p49 of court records and is a "deed of gift" from an "old and infirm" Joshua Harbin to s-i-l Wm. Byrd for maintance of Joshua and his wife, and gives his s-i-l William Byrd essentially all his possessions. The problem is this: The deed was dated the 15th day of Sept 1872 - no question about the writing. It is listed under the Nov Term AD 1872, and the following deed is also dated Nov Term AD 1872. All the ones are ones, all the sevens are sevens. My records indicate Joshua was born in 1755 in MD, married Ruth Hoskinson in 1778 in MD, appears in deeds & censuses in Wilkes County 1778-1810, but not thereafter. He had a dau who married William Byrd. So are the court records dated incorrectly (1812 would make much more sense) or do we have two Joshua Harbins who married two Ruths and had two s-i-l's named William Byrd? Since both things sound abit unlikely to me, I would appreciate readers' comments on this. You know your early settlers - do you think the latter might have happened? Thanks so much! Joan Marie

    3. Hello, I see you are also researching the Osborne family. Do you happen to know if any of the family from Wilkes Co. moved on down to Henderson/Transylvania Co NC? I'm researching Cox's, Cagle' and Osborne's in that area. I have a Jeremiah (Jr) Osborne b. abt. 1772 (not sure where) d. 1857 in Henderson Co. He is supose to be the s/o a Jeremiah, but that's all I have going back. Jeremiah (Jr) married Ann Blythe (1771-1837). Their daughter Mary Osborne married Leonard Cagle. Mary's brother Champion Osborne married a Laurette Cox of SC, and Leonard and Mary's daughter Nancy Cagle married a John Cox of SC (my line) I believe the Cox;s and Osborne's may have been connected in Wilkes Co. before moving south. I discovered that my Cox's lived for a time in Wilkes Co. around 1790-1800. I recently discovered that my Cox's were in Wilkes Co. for a time around 1800, before moving on down to SC. Regards, Eddie Cox Belton, SC I have been to that cemetery in Traphill it used to be on the Richard Siddens farm; I to am decended from Jeremiah and Sarah Jane Adams Caudill I was lucky enough to be researching there with Sam Sebastian and Clayton Cox their was a stone for Sarah Jane but not one for Jeremiah but it was known he was burried there. I was decended from their son William who went to Lawrence Co KY about 1822. Jim Ovendorf Subject: Re: [NCWILKES] Joines Cemetery, Wilkes County, NC Thanks for your response. 3. There is an excellent book entitled "John Carlton of Orange County and Albemarle County Virginia and Some of His Descendants 1720-1989" by Lt. Col. George H. Carlton. I ordered the book from Lt. Col. Carlton in 1997. At that time his address was 901 Becky Lane Red Oak, TX 75154 Phone 214-617-7519. The brochure reads: "John Carlton is the oldest proven Carlton ancestor of the author. John was born ca. 1720, probably in Virginia. He is listed as a Planter of Orange County VA in 1761 when he and Henry Barlow bought 400 acres in Albemarle County, VA. Family tradition say that John married Elizabeth Wallace ca. 1745 in VA and that he died ca. 1766 or about ten years before the revolution. The five children of this marriage - Elizabeth, Thomas, Lewis, John and Ambrose - left VA during the Revolutionary War. Elizabeth is believed to have married Thomas Barlow and moved to Scott and Nicholas Counties Kentucky with other Barlow families. The four sons and their mother, Elizabeth, were in Wilkes County, NC between 1778 and 1780. The family tradition that said all four sons served in the American Revolution has been proven for three of them and is probably true for the fourth son. The related families of Barlow, Burch, Isbell, Land, Livingston and others also moved to Wilkes County about the same time from VA. Most of these families had something else in common, that of being early Baptist. The author is an eighth generation descendant of the earliest John Carlton and is retired from the United States Air Force." If you can't find the book I would be happy to look up any ancestors you know of & let you know if they are in the book. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jo Ann Whitworth" <whitkid2@bigrivertel.net> To: <ncwilkes@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 13, 2006 10:28 AM Subject: Re: [NCWILKES] Lewis Carlton, 1758-1827, Wilkes Co NC > Hi Trudi, > The Carlton line is my cousin's line, but I am trying to find out what I > can > about that line.
