Hi Rae And thank you for sharing what you have found or collected. DO you know were you got the data om George MINTON being Mary Ann ELLER's nee MINTON's father???? I think he is a possible canidate for her father but can not find any thing to prove it??? thank you Jeanie RaeSunshin@aol.com wrote: I have a little bit on this family, but not much more than you do. Hi, I am also related to the Hinchey/Hincher/Hinshaw family through Phoebe Ann Hincher who married James Linville Bumgarner - the common parents being William Hinshaw and Charlotte Carroll. It seems this name may originally have been Hinshaw, but it looks like all the male descendants ended up mostly using Hinchey or Hincher, probably due to literacy and/or dialect issues. Have you found any information to help determine William and Charlotte's ancestry? They were married in Orange County, NC. Anyway, I just thought I would chime in here since I have just been working on a few more census entries for all the kids of William and Charlotte. My brother and I spent the day today looking around Wilkes County at old graveyards. Since I was out, I went ahead and indexed the Caudill / Joines Cemetery. None of this is proofed, so let me know if you find any errors. IRN (Individual Reference Number) is my wierd way of indexing everyone in my database and the information will be meaningless to you. If I don't have an IRN number next to a name, it means I haven't identified them. If you know who they are, how they tie to the CAUDILL~JOINES~ADAMS~HOLBROOK madness, please let me know. (Like some of you, I am part ADAMS, HOLBROOK, BLEVINS, CAUDILL, RICHARDSON, lord only knows what else). I try to keep track of all the interrelationships because I find them to be very revealing about places, events, and people from our collective history. Narrative: This cemetery is known by more than one name such as "Old Double Creek Baptist Church Cemetery". This cemetery was indexed on October 29, 2006 as below. The row numbers begin with row #1 being closest to the entry gate. Rows were read from left to right. There are unequal number of graves in each row therefore the columns do not align. Anything in CAPITALIZED ITALICS is inscribed on the stone. Other comments, if any, are mine. If two names appear in one bordered box, they share a common headstone. Anderson Independent-Mail Anderson, SC Oct 27, 4:16 AM EDT Records of Freed Slaves to Go Online By DIONNE WALKER Associated Press Writer RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Records the Freedmen's Bureau used to reconnect families - from battered work contracts to bank forms - will be placed online in part of a new project linking modern-day blacks with their ancestors. The Virginia Freedmen Project plans to digitize more than 200,000 images collected by the Richmond bureau, one of dozens of offices established throughout the South to help former slaves adjust to free life. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine on Thursday unveiled the project and a state marker near the site where the bureau once stood in downtown Richmond. "This is the equivalent for African Americans of Ellis Island's records being put up," said Kaine, who was joined by Mayor L. Douglas Wilder, the nation's first elected black governor and a grandson of slaves. Researchers will eventually transfer data from all of the southern states to an online database, said Wayne Metcalfe, vice president of the Genealogical Society of Utah, a partner in the project. Records from Virginia should be ready to go online by the middle of next year, Metcalfe said. "It was one of the larger states and one of the most complete collections available," he said. "It's a gold mine, as far as a genealogist is concerned." About a half-million slaves were left to establish a new life following emancipation, Metcalfe said. Established in 1865, the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands - also called the Freedmen's Bureau - helped former slaves find clothes, food and jobs. Bureaus kept meticulous records, documenting marriages and work histories. Those records will be scanned from microfilm and compiled into an electronic index families will eventually be able to access, Metcalfe said. Twenty-four years removed from slavery in rural Virginia, Hawkins Wilson had established himself as a respected Texas minister. But there was something missing from his life as a free man: the mother and sisters he left behind. In a letter dated May 11, 1867, he offered bureau officials details of his family's old home in Caroline County, and urged them to pass along a note to his sister, Jane. "Your little brother Hawkins is trying to find out where you are and where his poor old mother is," reads the letter, which will be included in the database. "Your advice to me to meet you in Heaven has never (lapsed) from my mind." Historians don't know if he ever found his family. Debra Great things have been affected by a few men well conducted. I think the other article said he died in January 1926. If that is true, there may be an obituary in the Wilkes County papers in late January or early February. I don't know the names of the newspapers in 1926 in Wilkes County, but I'll bet someone can tell you. If you get the newspaper name, the library or archive system may have back issues in either Wilkes County or the state of North Carolina archives. Rae Williams www.grannyandpopacaldwell.com
Do you mean to say Thomas Jefferson Hinchey b. btw 1831-1849-d.1926 The thing is if your man did not die in Wilkes CO he might not have record of death in this CO, most often they are written in the CO found dead? Some News papers are on microfilm in Librarys.. Some years and months are lost and some years in Wilkes have several area news papers. Since you don't have a month he died it would be very time consuming and nothing may be found. There has been no indexing that early. You can write and your call most court houses for death records. Ask for clerk of registers office. Ask the price? You can also do interlibrary loans on microfilm of news papers. Ask at the reference desk of your public library how to do this . But make sure they first have an easy to use microfilm machine with a printer. Many old news papers on film can be found also Raleigh NC at state archives. Google the state archives they should have a web page some place with the news papers that are available . I have sent to other states for news papers but not Raleigh yet. Or a look-up for a death certificate on Thomas Jefferson Hinchey b. 1831-1849. He was married to Millie Absher at the time. Thanks, Linda http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Appalachian_Heritage/ Thomas disappeared while taking a trip in January, 1926 to Alert, near Chapel Hill, Orange County, North Carolina. He was carrying cash and gifts to family members in Orange County, I was told by Clara Hinchey Harless that James Calvin, her father, said that "Jeff" was taking presents to one of his sisters... He took train and when he got close he hitched a ride with a man... when he got near where he needed to be dropped off he got out and offered the kind man $5 for his trouble. This was a large amount of money in those days... she said there were two men sitting outside the store where he was dropped off and they must have noticed that he was carring large amounts of cash and money. He disappeared and in a few weeks after a large search they found his clothes scattered in a large area along with his suitcase and ultimately found his body at the bottom of a well.
