I am still concentrated on Surry/sussex Co. VA. for my Lewis. I have not been able to connect to the Wilkes co. NC Underwood's, It would be ral interesting if we had a male descendant of that line that would be interested in doing a DNA test. that would confirm if our lines are connected. Cal

My g-g-g-g grandfather was Adam Jacob Staley. According to local stories, he died by drowning in the Yadkin/Reddies River in May 1812. I have not been able to find a death record or anything to corroborate this. Is there still a newspaper on microfiche maybe that may have announced his death. His wife, Eve, divorced him 1803 (one of the few divorces ever granted) and took all the property that he lived on with her. I don't know if he continued to live in Wilkes after the divorce but he is said to have remarried but possibly not in Wilkes. I am fairly certain of his death information because of the various people I received the exact same info from. Is there any way to validate this info???? What records are still left that would help? Thanks, Jimmie Staley

It's in the eastern portion of Wilkes County, between N. Wilkesboro and Ronda(which is beside Elkin) on its West and East, respectively with the communities of Hays and Austin to the north and Benham to the North East. Holly Farms was bought out by Tyson who employees several. The town itself about 10-15 miles north of NC Hwy 421(which can be accessed from US I-40 in this part of the state. The railroad is the common thread that is sewn throughout N. Wilkesboro, Elkin, Ronda and of course Roaring River. The area is still greatly rural. There are several churches about as mentioned before, most are primarily Baptist with several variations of the denomination being common. Several of these churches date back to the Civil War. I could go on. If there is any information specifically you'd like let me know. I still have friends and family in the area.

hi if you contact the core or engineers they most likely have records of those plots and sales. there is or used to be a small office beside the post office, it was or is for farmer that sign up for subsidies from the gov for farming. they used to have records and Ariel photos of all the plots of land in the country or the county tax office might still have those. i think that took place in the 60 so that is not that long ago in terms of how long they keep records. i remember a lot of farms were and i think some home sites were covered with the water. but i would first start at the tax map office that man has a lot of records or he used to. and then the office beside the post office. they may have the Ariel photos, you may just have to dig for them a bit.
