We have a huge conundrum regarding the Coleman connection to the Stubblefield family who were in the Wilkes Co., NC area before 1790. I believe Coleman was a surname, but like you, we haven't been able to get a direct connection. The given name "Coleman" was used in the Stubblefield family of Randolph Co., AR, and the Fielding McDaniel family of Lincoln Co., TN at the same time period. It is accepted by the ancestors that Wm. Stubblefield married Elizabeth McDaniel, probably in NC, prior to 1790. They named sons, Coleman and Fielding. The McDaniel family in Lincoln Co., TN, also used those names. Must be a connection between these two families but we have not been able to pin that down. I have seen evidence of surname - Coleman - in early to mid 1700's in VA and Fielding ,also, but cannot connect to our Wm. Stubblefield or Elizabeth McDaniel. Perhaps some day this will all be clear. Thanks again for your reply. Nita In a message dated 1/5/2007 10:22:41 P.M. Central Standard Time, RGSELAMB@aol.com writes: In a message dated 1/5/2007 8:15:25 P.M. It seems likely that his mother's surname would've been Coleman and that he, most likely, was not a firstborn son. However, over the years, I've not found a Ferguson/Coleman connection in the right time frame either. Maybe, there are some Coleman's out there who would know more.....hopefully....some day. Thank you for thinking for me. Sandra -------------------------------

    2. Margaret, Thanks for the interesting info about the Coleman, Stubblefield and McDaniel families. We know they were there but can't find the division of those that went to AR and those who went to TN. That knot is driving us nuts. Perhaps the necessary records we need were burned during the Civil War. Nita In a message dated 1/6/2007 11:00:02 A.M. Central Standard Time, margiesan@charter.net writes: Sandra and Nita, I don't know if this helps or not, but here goes. Hawkins co, Tn was a favorite place for Wilkes co people to migrate to. There were families there early on by the name of Coleman, Stubblefield, and McDaniel. My father's name was 'Bob White' and a lawyer by the name of Coleman gave him a quarter if he would change it to 'Robert Coleman'. He did His name was Robert Coleman Long. My father had an uncle named Richard Stubblefield Long, and there were McDaniel's there also. So I would think that these families knew each other or migrated together. 3. Thanks. My Clifton did not have a Peter for a child. His birth is somewhat iffy. Some place between 1794 and 1800. There was a Peter Keeton that came to KY in Wayne Co which was next to Cumberland at the time. Clinton Co got sandwiched in between later. The first Keeton's to be on the Cumberland Co census was in 1820 and the names were John and William both married with children. Clifton showed up on the 1830 census married with his first child born about 1827. Oh how I wish I could find something on him that would be proof. 3. These 3 Keetons that were on the 1810 Wilkes co NC census, were all on the same page, and being next door to one another except for a Gilreath that lived between John and William and next door to William was Peter. As I said before none of them were on the 1820 census. Ir sounds as though they all came to your area. In looking at the charts on Ancestry.com I found an older Clifton Keeton in Patrick co Va who either came to Wilkes co or his children did. I know from looking at these charts that many Keeton's settled in different counties in Tn as well as Ky. McMinn co for one. Another is Wayne co, Ky. I hope some of this helps. I would start with Patrick co, Va. It seems likely that his mother's surname would've been Coleman and that he, most likely, was not a firstborn son. However, over the years, I've not found a Ferguson/Coleman connection in the right time frame either. Maybe, there are some Coleman's out there who would know more.....hopefully....some day. 1. Re: [NCWILKES] Ferguson/Tripplett marriages in Wilkes co, NC
    2. Sandra, thank you for replying. Eastern Standard Time, N5BRY@aol.com writes: Does anyone know if Coleman was originally from someone with a surname Coleman? Nita, This is a suspicion I've had about Coleman Ferguson, too.

    3. Barbara, Your Clifton Keeton served in the war of 1812 from Wilkes co, NC in the Third Company of the Wilkes Co Regt. His listed on the muster rolls of the database 'NC 1812-1814 Muster Rolls' located on Ancestry.com. You may have already known this. I would think that his parents may have been in Wilkes co in 1810/1820. 3. Sandra and Nita, I don't know if this helps or not, but here goes.
