Hey guys!!!! Our mountain people did indeed pronounce names a little bit different. Many years passed before I figured out the name of my grandfather's sister. He was born in 1839 and she 1843. The census taker spelled what he heard---Ahreanie. I finally figured out her name was Irene and have encountered that spelling several more times. My grandmother was Matilda Jane but was called Tildy and another nickname was Mattie. I have seen Marty used for Martha. Hi, all, Just thought I'd point out that I have not found Mary at all as a nickname for Martha, but have often found Patsy/Patsie to be a nickname for Martha, and very often Polly as a nickname for Mary. And on several different occasions, I have found Nannie to have been another nickname for Mary, and Sookey/Sookie to have been another nickname for Sarah. I have to agree with Pam about Mary not being a nickname for Martha. I have "tons" of Marys in my tree, and quite a few Martha's, but never were the names interchangable. Another name problem I ran into quite frequently was the tendency of the mountain folk to change the pronounciation of the first name. I had a great Aunt Anna, who was always called "Anner", and I was well into my twenties before I ever learned that her name was actually Anna! I have also found names ending in "A" to be pronounced as though they ended in "IE". For example, my grandmother Zora was always called "Zorie". Many times the surviving relatives only know that ancestor by their "nickname", which really makes for difficult tracing. I also love it when the men are called Buck or Chief or some other nondescript nickname. Sandra, back in the 1950's there was a Dairy Company called Coleman's Dairy in Little Rock. May still be there for all I know. If your Coleman Ferguson was named after someone with the surname Coleman, maybe his son did, in fact, have relatives or kin of some sort in the Little Rock area. ----- Original Message ----- From: <RGSELAMB@aol.com> To: <ncwilkes@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 07, 2007 7:22 PM Subject: Re: [NCWILKES] Coleman, Stubblefield and McDaniels in Wilkes co, NC > > In a message dated 1/6/2007 3:16:29 P.M. There were Coleman's in Wilkes co, NC also. I just noticed them on a census that I got from the Ferguson mailing list archives. On the1810 census on pg 272 there is a Charles Coleman. There are Ferguson's from page 272 to page 284. So they were in the same area. I'll also check out Hawkins Co. TN since the years 1814-1825 are blank regarding Coleman's whereabouts. In other words, he seems to disappear from paperwork/documentation from 1814 Wilkes Co. Hey....I hadn't even thought of that angle. His father would've been just the right age to have been a Rev. Soldier, too. Maybe, I should check out any Rev. War officers (most likely from VA) with the surname "Coleman" and compare the roster of men. Thanks, Sandra

Stubblefield or Elizabeth McDaniel. Hi, again, Nita... I know that conundrums are supposed to be the enjoyable challenge of genealogical research, but enough is enough. I can truly relate to your frustration with the Coleman name....also, the McDaniel line. My McDaniel line (just for a possible hint for you) is from Chatham Co. NC with a Jacob McDaniel (Rev. War Soldier) who married Elizabeth (I've forgotten her maiden name, but it isn't Stubblefield)). They came to GA about 1810. At least, most of the family did. Let's hope this will be the year we'll both make a break-through. Sandra
basically Absalom Caldwell: root in the US is John and Margaret Phillips Caldwell. While I know for sure the Churches, Israels and Wheelers were in Wilkes County, there is supposition that the Caldwells were too. I've just started trying to figure out who -- I mean, there is a county named for them.
Mary Ann, It is very kind of you to do these look ups for people and I appreciate your help. Could you see if there is anything on Braxton, Sampson, or John Cox? They would be brothers or fathers and sons. And if it's not too much to ask, see if there are any marriages with the Osborne family to the Cox's. I understand if this is too much trouble, I thank you for any help you can offer. What Caldwell family are you researching. Nina
