    1. [NCWILKES] COXes in Wilkes Co [dancing on the Surry line?]
    2. kirby
    3. hi, Eddie I am researching some COX folk who were in and around Elkin/Surry & Trap Hill/Wilkes. I don't know if they are connected to yours as I haven't gotten as far 'back' as you have. so far I'm looking at [haven't proved for myself]: John Wesley COX b1850 NC -- md Jane UPCHURCH b1845 NC. - their son, Geroge Washington COX 1874-1952 md Cora Alice BILLINGS 1872-1948 [d/o Robt H BILLINGS b1834 & Mary A COLLINS/ COLLINGS b1832]. - their dau Jettie Grace COX 1900-1983 was [our] grandmother I am also interested in the UPCHURCH, BILLINGS and COLLINS lines... Jettie said she was part NA and we're looking for those threads [knowing they may not be found]. TIA kirbz@northstate.net --- Message: 3 Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2007 08:16:31 -0500 From: "Eddie Cox" <ecox4532@charter.net> Subject: [NCWILKES] Cox's in Wilkes Co. NC To: <NCWILKES@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <000601c738a7$60137410$640fa8c0@your6jnhhu0520> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Does any one on this list have connections to the Cox's in Wilkes Co. NC? I'm trying to track down the family of a Matthew Cox, born 1735 in VA. (Essex Co. I think) and died in Wilkes Co. in 1804. His will lists children: Carter, Mastin, Aras (Ariss), Matthew, Ambrose, Braxton, and Delphine. I have a confirmed DNA cousin who descends from Braxton Cox. I'm trying to determine which son I come from. My best guess due to "LACK" of information is Mastin. He seems to be the one who no one has any info on, and that fits with the rest of my line. <grin> Most of the others families are documented down past where my line should connect. My earliest ancestor, John Cox was born in NC, I'm guessing Wilkes Co., between 1780-90 according to census. He then shows up in Greenville Co. SC in 1810, and remains there til his death in 1853. Unless I descend from an unknown brother of Matthew, it would seem I've narrowed it down, but I need some proof. Thanks in advance. Eddie Cox

    1. [NCWILKES] LAWS FAMILY, specifically: Penelope Laws, daughter of John Laws and Sally (Sarah) Teague Laws
    2. johnpattillo
    3. I am in the process of attempting to complete my wife's DAR application. Her Patriot was a David Laws who was born 1755 in Halifax County, Va, moved to Wilkesboro and married a Martha Mitchel on 22 Feb 1779,had a son, John Laws who was born in Wilkesboro in 1780, and who married a Sally (Sarah) Teague on 1 Nov 1802, and Sarah and John had a daughter, Penelope Nellie Laws, born in Wilkesboro on 25 Sep 1823. It is believed that John Laws died on 9 March 1835. It is also believed that after John died, his wife and family moved to Missouri sometime sometime between that date and 1840. John also had a brother, James, who married hisl (James')cousin, Rosanna (sp?). it is also believed that James and Rosanna and their children moved to St Francois or St. Genevieve County sometimebetween 1835 and 1840. It is also believed that John's widow, Sarah and their children, including Penelope Nellie also moved toSt. Francois orSt. Genevieve County, Missouri at or about the same time as James and Rosanna. On a recent visit to North Wilkesboro I found out that the LAWS family had a cemetery in t he Brushy mountain or Walnut Grove Area on Price Road. Perhaps this is where John Laws was buried (he died 9 March 1835). It also appears that the Laws families first lived in the Pares Knobb community What I need to prove is the following: where John Laws is buried in North Carolina; that Penelope Nellie was the daughter of John Laws and his wife, Sarah. If anyone can help me with the above proof, they may contact me, John Pattillo, at johnpatti@cfl.rr.com or write to me at 146 Virginia Drive, Winter Park, Florida 32789 or call me at (407)644-2816

You might want to include a little more information, such as a time frame or possibly an area of the county that you are looking for. The National Archives holds the original documents and its microfilm copies. You can ask your local librarian for a general genealogy book which describes more info about these documents. Come to think of it, I'm sure the NARA.gov website also describes these documents. My personal experience with these documents: extensive, difficult to search, able to glean much general information about the attitude of the times. Hope this helps. Good luck!
