If I didn't live in California, I would help you myself. The people in this part of NC are extremely friendly and helpful. At least that has been my experience. Most of my relatives are from Job's Cabin, and that general area includes Parsonsville. I've attached a map, which I hope will show up. If you enlarge it just a bit, you can see Big Ivy Road, Parsonville Rd, and Parsonville. My Church family was from Summit, which is also on the map. The one time I corresponded with Mr. McNeil, he said he would be happy to help me find a couple of obscure cemeteries that I was interested in, as long as he didn't have prior plans. I don't know how his health is now, but if no one else can help you, he will if he is able. Since Barbara Pipek is in the area, she might be willing to help you find them as well. Good luck with the search, and if you've never been to NC, you are in for a real treat! This area of NC is positively beautiful. :-)

For many years I have only known that my family generally came from Wilkes County and then a short while ago (a few months) I learn that it was around Parsonville and that there was a Powell cemtery plot. Now there are two Powell cemeteries-definitely an embarrasment of riches! I have no idea who might be in either, but would like an address or map so that I could visit. My assumption is that my gggggrandmother and father are buried on the cemetery that was on John Martin's property since they lived with him but that would just be a guess. Certainly back then (140-190 years ago) there were a lot of Powell family members in that immediate area. In fact, my father visited from Indiana nearly 70-80 years ago and knew family members in the area but he has been gone for nearly 40 years so I have no idea what he knew about the area and so forth. Is there a way to get a map or something to help me figure out where to go and who to ask before I go looking for the cemeteries? I will also let distant Powell relatives in Indiana (I now live in Wisconsin) know of this-there are quite a few 5th and 6th cousins there and a few of us keep in touch by email. I'm visiting some of them for the first time next month and they very much want to know where the family came from...this will be exciting news for them. Anyway, thank you all so much. Bill Powell

One of them is on my property and the other one is about two miles up the road from me. Your John Martin Powell that married Mary Owens is buried in the John Powell Cemetery on Little Big Ivy Road in the community of Parsonsville. There are several graves in this cemetery - some have names on the stones and others do not. This cemetery is located on my father's great-nephew's property. This great-nephew descends from John Martin and Amanda Catherine SPEARS POWELL. So gaining access to the property would not be an issue. In the meantime, I will check with my cousin to see how accessible this cemetery is now. It used to be located within a cow pasture, but I am not sure anymore how much the field has grown up. There is a man living in Wilkes Co. who spent eight years, along with his late wife, documenting the cemeteries in Wilkes Co. I would think you could contact him to see where the Powell cemetery is. I know he used to charge a nominal fee for records he provided, but I don't know if he charges just to tell someone where a certain cemetery is located. His name is George F. McNeil, 1128 Winkler Mill Rd., Wilkesboro, NC 28697. This was where he lived in 2002, and I'm going on the assumption that he still lives there. I have a John Martin Powell, b. abt 1798 in Wilkes Co., NC, on my family tree. He married Mary Owens. Do you know if he is part of the Powell families that have been discussed in this thread? I got my Powell information from an Owens descendant who has since passed away. John Martin and Mary Owens Powell had children Alice, Rachel, Rhoda, Green, Nancy, Jane, John Madison, William, Rebecca, and Mary Ann. A few of the girls married into my Phillips family. I think John Martin's parents were William and Rachel Smith Powell from VA, but I have no proof of this. It is something I found online, and there weren't any sources listed, unfortunately. John Martin was listed as one of the children of William and Rachel, and there was a Mason Powell listed as brother to John Martin. This information says that this Mason was born abt. 1797 in Wilkes Co. Barbara Shirley Rogerson

Hi again. Glad I could be of help. My dad's maternal great-grandfather moved from Wilkes Co, NC to Madison Co., IN, when he was just a young man. He lived with his future father-in-law as a boarder. His mother-in-law was a woman named Emily Plutina Cheek, who was born in NC according to records others have checked for me. I have yet to find out who HER parents were! She was listed as Miller when she died. Do you know if the death certificates list the names of the parents of the deceased? I was going to order a copy of her certificate to see if that was the case, but they wanted to know her parents names. If I knew that, I wouldn't need the death certificate! This may be the email. It is the only one I can find and it did come from my cousin Ken Steven's who passed away last year. You might try this Scott Kendall and see what he can tell you. I really feel badly about my cousin, as he had almost completely financed a book on the trail of Hamp Kendall in Wilkes County, where he was wrongly accused of a murder and spent about 10 years on Central Prison in Raleigh, NC. I hope someone can get this book in print as it was 99% finished. I don't know how I received this message as it has my email address from the 90's. But I did receive it. I'm afraid I may not be of much help right now. I have hit many brick walls, since starting research. And then for the last few years, I haven't done much research due to marriage and a baby. I didn't figure the research would be that hard. While I was researching, I found out that my William Brown may not have been the son of James Brown, but maybe a brother or cousin. It's so hard to sort out all of the Willim Browns. It is amazing to think that genealogy work was being done in the '30s as it seems to all have disappeared. I have visited IN and found a ton of distant cousins, but I cannot seem to pin down what country they came from. I've heard rumors of England and Germany, but I've not heard about Northern Ireland. What information do you have about that? I do believe we are likely from the British Isles as the families we traveled with from NC to IN were. It's so hard for me to believe that no one out there knows. Especially s! ince they kept in contact so long--how could the Brown history just vanish. Well, I'm sorry that I haven't been of much help. I'd gladly share any information with you that I have. I have only traced the Browns back to NC. I have some land records and such for James and William Brown, and then some more records for when they moved to IN, but nothing before about 1775. If you have any info or find some out from our IN relatives, it'd be great if you'd let me know. Feel free to email me with any further questions or requests for info. Sarah Brown-Thoenes
Nina, Do you know whether there is a DNA test available for females .........to be tested back to females? I would appreciate hearing. My family would not be the same as the one mentioned in your letter. (Mine would be a Davis in Moore County, NC.) RobbiePurse@aol.com
Yes, these Smiths were from North Carolina, and were in Lee County, Virginia for a few years before moving back to NC.. If you want more information, I will be glad to send it, just let me know.
Hi, Betty. Sorry for not replying sooner. Have been dealing with Wet Macular Degeneration. I forwarded your email on to a cousin when I received it and hope that he got in touch with you. Do you want information further back on William Kendall? I have my research back to him and hit a brick wall years ago. A man emailed me sometime ago and I don't know if I kept his email, but will look for it. I did forward it on to some of my male cousins, since he was looking for male descendants of William Kendall for a DNA test. They were doing DNA studies on the supposed descendants of William Kendall in Virginia. There are several William Kendalls in Virginia in that time period and he nor I knew which one was ours. If you have some information that will get us back further, we surely would love to know about it. I do have most of the descendants of William Kendall down to the present in my lines. I could send you a copy if you would like it. I have Family Tree Maker software and am not very good at computers, so I don't know exactly how to send it to you by email. I could try, but just in case I fail, just email me directly and give me your snail mail address at Ninajcobb@aol.com My Grandmother, Minerva Josephine Kendall, was the daughter of Larkin Leroy Kendall, who was the son of Thomas Kendall, who was the son of William Kendall, Jr., who was the son of William Kendall of Virginia.
