Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.wilkes/7233.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I believe most of your questions are answered in the information below. John E. Fletcher, PhD Thomas Fletcher and Sarah Hundon Dogan Thomas Fletcher, at age 40, came to Wilkes in 1802 as an itenerant Methodist Minister. He met and married the widow Sarah Hundon Dogan in December of 1802. Their marriage bondsman was James Fletcher and the Witness was William B. Lenoir. The Bond is #000165156 and was dated 2 December, 1802. Thomas had served in the Revolution and received a pension for his service. His pension application is #SF 84830. He stated in his Pension Application that he was born in Ware Parish, Glouchester Co. VA on 3 Feb. 1762. He states that he was at the siege of Yorktown. The widow Sarah Hundon Dogan was born about 1772/1774 and was first married to Samuel Dogan in June of 1790. Their marriage bond was dated 10 June 1790, and the Bondsman was John Robbins. Their Witness was Charles Gordon, C.C. Sarah was between 28 and 30 years of age at her second marriage and had at least 3 children by her first marriage. She is listed as a head of household in the 1799 Property and Pol Tax records with 3 polls and no acres of Land. The 3 polls are unidentified, but all of her children would have been under 10 in 1799. She is not listed as a head of household in the 1800 Census. In 1803, Sarah Fletcher made a deed of gift to James Fletcher (See Deed Book "F", Page 12, dated 22 December 1803.) In 1805, Thomas is listed with 1 Poll and 401 Acres of Land. In the 1810 Census, he is listed as over 45, his is 48, and Sarah is listed as 26 - 45; she is 36 - 38. Their family are listed as 1 male under 10, 3 females under 10, and 2 females 10 - 16. In the 1820 Census, both parents are listed as over 45, (58 and 46-48), and the family are 1 male 10 - 16, 1 female under 10, and 3 females 10 - 16; the conclusion is, 5 children born between 1803/1804 and 1810. To identify these children, we examine Thomas' Will, dated 10 February 1835 in the Wilkes County NC Will Book #4, Page 190. He mentions his son, J.W. (John Wesley)Fletcher, Rebecca (Fletcher) White, Elizabeth "Betsey" (Fletcher) Gordon, and Permelia (Fletcher) Jones. He also mentions a stepson, Dr. Joseph H. (Hundon) Dogan and a Mary (Fletcher?) Martin. He leaves disposition of slaves, Delphia, Tanner James and Nancy, and Henry. These children would account for the 5 born between 1803/1804 and 1810. The named executors of the estate are Col. James Martin and Dr. Joseph H. Dogan >From the Wilkes Co. Marriages, 1800 - 1825, we find : Elizabeth "Betsey" Fletcher married Richmond Gordon, 15 Jan. 1818 John Wesley Fletcher married unknown record not found Rebecca Fletcher married Landry R. White, 3 June 1825 Parmelia Fletcher married Russel H. Jones 14 Sept. 1826 Mary Fletcher married E. J. Martin about 1829 (not verified) Thomas Fletcher died about 18 March 1835 in Wilkes Co. NC. He was age 73. His estate was settled in 1839, according to the Wilkes Court Records. Sarah Hunston Dogan Fletcher died in 1840 at age about 66, and her Will was proved in Court, 10 November 1840. (See Wilkes Co. Will Book #4, Page 234). She listed as her heirs Rachael and Landry White, Mary Martin, Russell and Parmelia Jones, Joseph H. Dogan, J. W. Fletcher, Mary Stone, Richmond and Elizabeth Gordon, and Elizabeth Vannoy. The husbands of Mary Stone, Elizabeth Vannoy, and Mary Martin are not named. Sarah's Will implies that her children by Samuel Dogan were: Joseph H. Dogan b. abt 1792 married unknown record not found Elizabeth Dogan b. abt 1794 married ? Vannoy record not found Mary Dogan b. abt 1796 married ? Stone record not found Family Group Sheet Thomas Fletcher born 3 February 1763 Ware Parish, Glouchester Co.
