    1. [NCWILKES] Founding of Wilkesboro?
    2. Jesse Stamper
    3. Hello, According to information I found on the internet, "John Parks (1706-1793) helped found the Capital City of Wilkesboro, in Wilkes County, North Carolina in 1778". John Parks was my 9th Great Grandfather, he married Mary Sharp. Does anyone have a record of him helping found Wilkesboro? I have never seen any real proof. Any information on the founding of Wilkesboro itself would greatly be appreciated. Sincerely, Jesse Stamper My email addresss is: Leecorydon@juno.com

And the guy's name is "DEW", not Drew but that is not a problem. Drop him a note next time you visit his site. Now, if we could just get all other county associations in NC to start doing what we've done. :-) Even though we have over 300 surveyed so far, we think there might be more than 200 more waiting for us to locate them. 1. [NCWILKES] Surry County Cemeteries Now On-Line
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: gravehunternc Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.wilkes/7246/mb.ashx Message Board Post: On behalf of the Surry County Genealogical Association (SCGA), we are happy to announce that our Cemetery Project is now on the Internet. Photographs are still being loaded and it may be a few more weeks before all the pictures are added. At present there are over 300 cemeteries listed and we will be visiting and documenting more cemeteries and adding them to the web site as time permits. The address is: http://cemeterycensus.com/nc/surr/index.htm When looking at the data, you may see cemetery surveys of burials with some of our data. That information, however, was not part of our project but has been included by the web site owner as an additional feature either thru the donation of the data from others, or sharing of existing survey data from other web sites. Our project was to locate cemeteries (their physical location and a GPS coordinate), provide driving directions, identify physical condition, plus take some photos of the area we surveyed. We want to thank a few SCGA members for their tireless efforts for "wandering in the woods" in order to find these cemeteries since without them, this project would have not been possible. They are Andy Hennis of Mt. Airy (past President of SCGA), Joe Hicks of Elkin (who continues to uncover new cemeteries in the western part of Surry), Wilma Hiatt, Diane Niston, and myself. As we continue to hear about and find cemeteries, we'd also like to hear from others if you know of a cemetery not shown in our list. If so, just send an Email to me or to the contact listed on the above website. Minimum data needed is the name of the cemetery (and alias names if known), directions to the cemetery from a given point (example, from the intersection of 2 roads, etc), miles driven between points, left turns and right turns, etc., condition of the cemetery, and names of the occupants if you have them. Also, if you already have a GPS reading that would be great! And if you want to volunteer to help us, just drop us a line and we'd love to talk to you. Also, we send a special and well deserved "thanks" to the web site owner, Allen Dew. Without his technical expertise, creativity, and tireless efforts in organizing and categorizing the data for us (and others), none of this would have happened. We trust our efforts will be of great benefit to all genealogists and researchers for years to come. How was this case settled? Were all of those squaters tossed off the land "lock, stock, and barrel"? My Meredith Minton and others had been on that land for some 35 years before the ownership became an issue. Seems a little ruthless to toss a guy off after that much time had elapsed. What do you think? Lomane Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I would like to order a copy of the will of Jonathan Stamper, Sr. (1719-1799) which is dated December 17, 1793. Where do I send my request to? Must I send a self addressed envelope? How much do they charge for making photocopies? Are there any volunteers who would make a trip to the Court House? Any information would be greatly appreciated! 1. Re: [NCWILKES] How to order Wilkes Co. records?
    2. Gail Rich Nestor
    3. Hi Jesse, all of the old stuff is at the NC Archives in Raleigh. If you go to the Archives website, though, you can see a detailed inventory of their holdings. It is my understanding that you have to make research requests through an independent researcher and they can provide the list. Please correct me if any of this is wrong... The Wilkes County Community College does have a great collection of old court records on microfilm also, but again, you'd probably have to hire someone to search the records and get the copies for you. How much do they charge for making photocopies? Are there any volunteers who would make a trip to the Court House? > Any information would be greatly appreciated! > > Sincerely, > Jesse Stamper > > > My email address is: Leecorydon@juno.com > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NCWILKES-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > -- Gail Rich Nestor Smyrna, Georgia www.roots2buds.net

    3. In all this discussion of the Johnson lineage, I wish someone would run across the name of Parmanus Johnson (abt 1788-18 Aug 1853). According to the 1850 Census, he was born in VA. I think his son was Nimrod Johnson (03 Sept 1807-31 Aug 1864). The 1850 and 1860 Censuses say Nimrod was born in NC. Apparently Nimrod migrated to Davidson County, TN prior to 1830, then to Marshall County, TN by October 1837, and finally to Gibson County, TN about 1848. Parmanus followed him to each of these places and both of them are buried at the Oak Grove United Methodist Cemetery near Trenton, TN. Nimrod's children were: Sarah (1833), John (1835), Eliza (1837), Elizabeth (1838), Samuel (1842), and Jeremiah Franklin (23 Dec 1844-28 Oct 1894). If any of this information resonates with anyone on this genealogy list, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you. 3. Phyllis, I checked my line and the only Rachel I found in my line that might match your 1800 census is Rachel Walker Johnson(daughter of George and winifred Walker of Westmoreland Co.,Va).Rachel md Jeffery Johnson III(1749 - 1789).Their children were: William(1751);Samuel(1757),Jeffery IV;Thomas,George. There were two other sons and two other daughters but have no names listed for them,so don't know if Leah could have been one of their daughters and could not find Henry,Jesse or Walker listed. Also, another bit of info: Cpt. Samuel Johnson and his wife,Mary Haman are buried in Trap Hill Cemetery in Trap Hill,NC William Perry Johnson, his wife,Jane Lusk and their daughter Beatrice are buried in Big Meadows Cemetery Hope this might be of some help to oyu.
