Odds are it wasn't their family -- most family cemeteries today are on land that now belongs to someone else, and that's a big part of the problem. Does anyone know the raods where the current site is mapped. I would like to find earlier maps and see if we can identify these people. In my opinion this is one morer eason not to shop at walmart!!!!! Unmarked graves found under Wal-Mart construction site Associated Press Tuesday, May 1, 2007 GRANITE FALLS, N.C. - More than 50 graves dating to the early 1800s were discovered underneath a Wal-Mart construction site. An anonymous call led to the discovery. A former state archaeologist visited the site before a company removed the remains of the unmarked graves, said Linda Story, town manager in Granite Falls. The remains were moved to Sunset Hills Cemetery here, though it is still unknown to whom they belonged. Story said the graves were found where a road leading to the Wal-Mart would be built, though there wasn't a record of the graveyard at the Register of Deeds office and no one has come forward to claim the remains. Crews plan to have the land cleared by June, and the Wal-Mart is scheduled to open next year. ___ Information from: The Hickory Daily Record, http://www.hickoryrecord.com http://www.hickoryrecord.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=HDR% 2FMGArticle%2FWSJ_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1173351034552 &path=!news!statenews
It's too late for this cemetery, but there are ways for state and local government to prevent this situation. The state of Georgia has extensive laws concerning preservation of cemeteries, and although it is possible to have them moved -- it is a very long, expensive process that involves minute-by-minute supervision by an archaeologist, thorough genealogical research, public hearings, etc. If anyone would like further information to be used in developing such protections elsewhere, request the "Grave Intentions" guide from the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, 156 Trinity Avenue, SW, Suite 101, Atlanta, GA 30303 -- www.gashpo.org. My own county has an extensive ordinance addressing this issue and a cemetery commission to supervise. I will be happy to send a copy of our ordinance (as an example) to anyone who wants to contact me privately at reb1861@aol.com. But would a title seach necessarily lead to any ownership papers during the early 1800's? I know there were deeds but the records weren't as meticulously kept as they are now. Jimmie Staley ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

Dear Carolyn: Thanks for your note about the Johnson reunion. I wish I had some clue that my Johnsons were tied in with any of the lines you mentioned, but alas, nothing in your note resonates with my research. My ancestor was Parmanus (various spellings) Johnson (1788-1853). His son was Nimrod Johnson (1807-1864). Both are buried in Gibson County, TN. Parmanus was supposedly born in VA and Nimrod in NC. Both eventually migrated through Davidson County, TN, to Marshall County, TN, and finally to Gibson County, TN. From sketchy evidence, I have deduced that there were two Parmanus Johnsons, one the son of Charles Johnson in Wilkes County and the other the son of Thomas Johnson in Granville County. But that's where the trial ends, so far at least. If you uncover any info that might tie our lines together, I would be delighted to "brain-storm" with you. Gracie, I have a Zollie Parsons in my family tree. He was the son of William Gather Parsons and Julia Ann Blackburn. Zollie's sister Vetra was the grandmother of the late Nascar champion, Benny Parsons, who died last December. My Zollie was born February 08, 1900, in the Parsonsville community of Wilkes Co. Hope this helps. "gc-gateway@rootsweb.com" <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> wrote: This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
