    1. Re: [NCWILKES] Fannie Sprinkle Halbrook/Holbrook
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: MLSopp Surnames: Holbrook, Sprinkle, Bauguess Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.wilkes/7265.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Tracy posted to the Wilkes Co. Message Board looking for information on Fannie Sprinkle Holbrook. Fannie was the d/o Robert Sprinkle & Sarah Bauguess. Fannie was the informant on Tracy's great grandmother's death certificate when her great grandmother died in Oliver Springs, Morgan Co., TN in 1930. I think that Fannie Sprinkle Holbrook is the Fannie Holbrook on the 1930 census in Edwards Twp., Wilkes Co., NC. The Wilkes Co. Fannie was 43 at the time the census was taken, suggesting a birth of about 1887, which meshes with the year of birth Tracy has for Fannie. The 1900 census shows that Fannie was born Apr 1887 (of course the month and/or year on the 1900 census could be wrong, but the year is undoubtedly pretty close). The Wilkes Co. Fannie's husband was Oliver Holbrook. The World War I draft registration cards show that Oliver Holbrook was born 21 Aug 1890, Traphill, Wilkes Co., NC. He & Fannie are on the 1920 census, living in Edwards Twp., as in 1930. Fannie was 32 on the 1920 census, meshing ok with the birth year Tracy suggests. The SSDI shows that Oliver Holbrook died Sept 1965. I cannot find him in the NC Death Index. Did he die out of state? Or am I stupidly missing him in the index? The SSDI & the NC Death Index include a Fannie Holbrook who died 14 Mar 1986 in Wilkes Co.(SSDI showing a last residence of Traphill). But! Those records give a birth of 25 Oct 1897, making her a good 10 years younger than Fannie Sprinkle and of the Fannie on the 1920 & 1930 censuses. Could the SSDI & Death Index date of birth be incorrect? Or were there two Fannie Holbrook's living in Wilkes Co.? Curious, eh? Margaret (Note: If you are reading this message on the Wilkes Co. 3. This happened when my 5th great grandparents farm was sold out of the family. No provisions were made to build a fence around the plot that set in the middle of the field. The new owners took up the stones, plowed over it and planted their crops. I have seen numerous family plots fenced sitting in the middle of fields. However, I have been told by people that watched and witnessed lakes being built on top of old graves also. There does not seem to be enough time allowed for people to find out about these cemeteries. At least you can be thankful that they were handled with consideration. They were dug up, put in coffins, and buried at a regular cemetery where they will not be bothered again. I watched all of this on tv. ----- Original Message ----- From: <jlynndagenhart@netzero.net> To: <ncwilkes@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 03, 2007 1:49 PM Subject: Re: [NCWILKES] NC Law re: Removal of Graves > The even sadder part is that Ray Starnes sold the land knowing possibly > that his Family was buried there/unless His father had plowed it under > before he was born. > Something seems very strange. there is no mention of field stones. > Everyone of those graves would have been at one tine marked at the head > and foot with native field stones at the very least some of which may > have had names or dates scratched on them.I just got off the phone with > the Mayer of Granite falls who has promised to secure and send me a copy > of the report done as each grave was removed. > I confirmed each set of remains was in a separate box and that at least > ten boxes were buried per grave or plot at Sunset Cemetery. > The Mayor indicates Ray Starnes claimed not to know about the cemetery but > his Older Cousin Now 100 knew about it. There are also old county maps that can be studied as well as the census once a point of reference is established. 2. The plot thickens Local rumor has it that Ray Starnes removed the fieldstones years ago and plowed the land under and then played dumb when he sold the land. Rumors were even falsely reported that it was an old slave graveyard. Only problem only One Starnes and No Bisner ever owned slaves in the area. The Final proof lies in the sale of the land between 1880 and 1900 will get that info soon

    2. The even sadder part is that Ray Starnes sold the land knowing possibly that his Family was buried there/unless His father had plowed it under before he was born. Something seems very strange. there is no mention of field stones. Everyone of those graves would have been at one tine marked at the head and foot with native field stones at the very least some of which may have had names or dates scratched on them.I just got off the phone with the Mayer of Granite falls who has promised to secure and send me a copy of the report done as each grave was removed. I confirmed each set of remains was in a separate box and that at least ten boxes were buried per grave or plot at Sunset Cemetery. The Mayor indicates Ray Starnes claimed not to know about the cemetery but his Older Cousin Now 100 knew about it. I am inclined to believe that the Stones were removed and the cemetery plowed over by a member of the Starnes Family sometime in the last 20-40 years so as to make the area safer for cattle to graze..

    3. Great! I don't know of anyone in Lenoir that I can send to the courthouse. I now live in Colorado, so any research I do is on the internet. All of my family still in Lenoir either work or would have no idea how to do the research. But, it sounds as though you've gotten a lot done, already. Does this mean that the remains were placed, one body per box? That would certainly be a lot better! Cindy -----Original Message----- From: ncwilkes-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ncwilkes-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of jlynndagenhart@netzero.net Sent: Thursday, May 03, 2007 9:45 AM To: ncwilkes@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NCWILKES] NC Law re: Removal of Graves Cindy Just spoke with the reporter.Linda Story's offcie also advised me that they ran notcies in The Lenoir News Topic. One source says the remains were put in wooden boxes and placed ten boxes to a common grave or plot. I have to research the deeds from 1880 when Sarah Salina Starnes was living with her Cousin Simon Pinkney Bisnar and 1900 when she and Husband William E Tolbert are on the land that was sold by their grandson Ray to Walmart. The Bisnars are no longer in Caldwell in 1900 so their should be a land sale. Several sources have led me to believe this is The Old Bisnar burial Ground yet Simona and Rachel Starnes Bisnar(parents of Simon P and Aunt and Uncle of Sarah Satrenes) are allegedly buried at Pine crest in Granite Falls. If someone can go to the registrars and look for the sale of the land by Simon P Bisnar after 1880 we might have our missing link. Sarah Starnes had two sons Edgar V and Oliver P after 1886 both went by Satrens but may have been Bisnars. I interviewed 100 year old Maureen Starens Moore who remembered the Cemetery and thinks it was the Bisnar cemetery ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NCWILKES-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
