NC.. One source says my GGG-grandfather, Thomas Cox of Beaver Creek in Wilkes Co. NC married Bethenia Aldridge (Aldrich), so I am trying to find out all I can about the Aldridge's in the County, possibly finding her parents. In the 1790 Census Thomas and Bethenia had 3 boys and a girl. In 1804 Ison Aldridge sold 75 ac of land to Phenehas Boyd near Beaver Creek, Thomas Cox, Bethenia and (son) Aaron witnessed the transaction. David Cox (possible kin) lived a short distance away on Werrior Creek. In 1787 David Cox and James Henderson tried to buy 300 ac of land on Beaver Creek, their names were marked out and Philip Davis was written in. In September 1787 David attended an estate sale of Elijah Aldridge. In the 1790 Census, David and his wife had 3 boys and a girl also. On June 27, 1791 David Cox applied (posted bond) to adopt 3 miner orphans, Frances Aldridge, Edmon Aldridge and Keziah Aldridge (Edmon Tilly was Bondsman). I realize Iaham and Isom are spelled differntly but may be the same person. Please let me know if any one hase any knowledge of any of these Aldridge's or Cox's. Ball passed away Sunday A. M. - One of the oldest landmarks dies at Advanced age of 83. ".......In the trying days of the Civil War, North Carolina never furnished a braver soldier than Mr. Ball. Enlisting in May of 1861, in company A, First North Carolina Calvary, he served until the close of the war. In the battle of Spottsylvania Court House he was severly wounded. Later he was attached as courier to the staff of General Wade Hampton, who, with General Stuart, shared the command of the Confederate Calvary of the Army of Northern Virginia. During a fierce engagement, in which his commander, Colonel W. H. H. Cowles, was wounded, Mr. Ball manifested his loyalty by bearing him from the field of battle and caring for him in the face of approaching enemy, both being captured and held as prisoners until the hostilities between the North and the South had ceased. The harrowing experiences of the period were ever vivid in h! is memory, even in the last days of his illness." Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The manuscript is currently being reviewed by several author/historians. I am always on the lookout for additional "nuggest" that I might add to the manuscript. Love to quote short excerpts from letters of soldiers of Barringer's Brigade - which included the 1st NC with Cowles. Anyway, I came across a story about a John Allen Smith of the 1st NC saving the life of Cowles during a battle. Then I saw your post, which I think, says that John Hampton Ball saved the life of Cowles during a battle. Perhaps two different battles. Do you have any more information on this - like what battle or when or any other documentation? Do you all have any letters in your family that were written by Ball or Cowles? It sounds like you have done lots of research on the same branch. Since I live in Raleigh, is there anywhere I can look in the NC Archives to verify the parents of Ellender Shumate? There is a marriage record for her and Aaron P. Brown in the "Wilkes Marriage Bond Index" where they married Jan 27, 1841 and she appears in the 1860, 1870 & 1880 census. It would make sense that Ellender might be a child of Toliver because her granddaughter (Sally Brown) married Mark Shumate & Susannah Stamper's grandson (Mark Hardin Shumate). They are my grandparents on my father's side. As to other children of Toliver Shumate & Lydia Clark -- In some places I've seen a daughter Martha (1818-1820), daughter Marion (b 1822, m John Johnson), and daughter Elizabeth (1823, m James Martin Wheatley). Do you have any info on them as to their true parents? I also don't see a marriage for Lydia (b 1828) but the 1860 census shows her with a son, Sampson Jason Shumate, age 2. Thanks for your help! InterLibrary took less than 2 wks to get the book transferred in to my library. The librarian assured me that it was ok to photocopy as long as it was for my own personal use. I could get two book pages on one sheet of paper which helped because it was a fairly thick book. My cost came to something like $16.00 but I had copied about 30 pages at home on my printer (I could see that that was going to take forever). I thought $16 was a very fair price because I don't believe the book is available any other way. Individuals that have it seem to be holding on to it. And I'd checked every online source I could imagine, which was quite a few. The book is a wealth of information. I'm descended through Robert, Rowland Sr's son, and his daughter Elizabeth who married Thomas Williamson. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I would like to ask the help of someone in Wilkes county to do a marriage look-up for me. The brides name would have been Lola Delilah Luffman born c. 1909 in State Road, NC. I only know that the groom's surname was Mumford. I do not know his given name. They would have been married around 1928 or 1929. This is all that I know of this marriage. I am not sure, but they also could have been married in Surry County, however, I have been led to believe that they were married in Wilkes County. Thank you for any help that you may provide. Shelby Luffman
I know that Thomas Pennington marrried Leatha Beall in 1796 in NC. Would they be in Wilkes? Were there any other Penningtons- perhaps families mentioned? Marie
