I am researching the Porter line from Wilkes County and have Nancy's marriage to Joel Soots. However, I don't have any other information on either his parents or their children. I have the following information from census records starting with 1850. Census Records: Joel Soots (52) appears in the 1850 North Carolina Census, Wilkes County with his wife Nancy (44), sons James (23), Joseph (18), Andrew (15), William (14), Elisha (12), Harrison (9), and daughter Matilda (20). Joel Soots (59) appears in the 1860 North Carolina Census, Wilkes County with his wife Nancy (53) and children Matilda (30) and Harrison (18) Joel Soots (70) appears in the 1870 North Carolina Census, Wilkes County with his wife Nancy (65) and daughter Matilda (39).. **************It's Tax Time! That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated, to wit: 1st tour: I entered the service in the war of the revolution in the state of North Carolina, Wilkes County, the year that Charleston was taken. I entered as a volunteer under William Lenoir, Captain, at Wilkes Court House, North Carolina. This is very interesting, Charlotte Hale Atkins was the dau. of Alexander Atkins, which was the s/o James Atkins Sr and Mary Carson. Mary had a brother named Robert Carson, but I don't think this is the Robert that the letter from Frances to the court was referring to. He probably had to be of age to act in Frances behalf so he was probably born abt 1820 at least. There was another Robert b. abt 1820 that I have not been able to figure out who his parents were. He had a son, my g-grandpa, named Joel Soots - (b.Abt 1857,d.Before 1910). He married Elizabeth "Betsy" Ann Walker - (b.Dec 1862). My grandpa was Harrison C. Soots-(b.28 Dec 1888-Wilkes County;d.11 Feb 1977. Married Ada Fletcher. My father was Joel Lee Soots - (b.18 Dec 1935 m.28 Sep 1956, to Rosa Lee Adams,-(b.15 Dec 1935). My father died 30 May 2003. I have a Mattie Adams, Spears B.04 Aug 1904 Reddis River, Wilkes County,NC D.29 May 1936 Congo, Wilkes County, NC Daughter of Allen H. (Allie) Adams & Lillie A. Nichols. Married to Thomas Andrew (Ander) Spears, Sr. Her death certificate says she was buried in Freewill Cemetery by Reins Sturdivant who when I stopped by could not tell me where this cemetery is located. I am guessing that in 1936 this may have been a Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in the Congo or nearby area. Ideas, Anyone? Nanalee

Do you Have anything on J. A. Lowe? First name said to be James. He ran off with my 3rd great grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Tedder ( maiden name Riddle )about 1900. Per Mary's divorce the sheriff could not locate Mary in 1900 to serve her with divorce papers. Mary was born 1848-1850 Wilkes. I believe J A Lowe would be around the same age as Mary. I am trying to locate where Mary died and what surname she may have died under. I don't know if she ever married J A Lowe. Have not located a marriage in NC.
