    2. As you know, this country is in the midst of restoring freedom to millions of people in the middle east, while at the same time spending billions of dollars here at home to secure the safety of the American homeland. All of this on top of a devastating attack on our people and our economy by radical islamic forces on 9-11. This came on the heels of an economic down-turn caused by the bursting economic bubble of the 1990's, and one of the major concerns of the American people right now is to control spending at the national level. The only comparable period in American history was the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the resulting military buildup during WWII. The major difference between these two periods seems to be that many Americans don't believe that any sacrifices need to be made during these times. In fact, some folks are intent on increasing spending, even at the expense of our vitally important defense needs. If we are serious about reducing the deficit and eliminating the spectre of inflation, it's time to realize that we have to prioritize our budget expendatures. Those of us who are involved in family history research feel that our projects should continue to be funded at previous levels. What genealogy needs is not more federal money, but more private donations and volunteers. In times like these, the people who benefit the most from protecting our historic records should take personal responsibility to restore and protect them.
