    3. While I was reading my great-grandfather's civil war documents, my husband pointed out to me that many of the men left to tend to their fields and crops. They could not let their famies go hungry. While the family at home could care for the crops in growing stages, they needed help in the planting and harvesting seasons. My great-grandfather deserted, for a month or so at a time but always came back to the same unit. He also lived long enough to draw a pension for his war time service.
