My Barnes ancestors came here with the materials for the original Cape Henry Lighthouse in what is now Va Beach, Va. After building of lighthouse, one finally settled in NC and went west to what is now Wayne County, the other in southeast Virginia. I am missing generations from original lighthouse builders to John Barnes born in Norfolk Co, Va 1820, married Frances (Webb) Cowling in 1848, died 1863 Richmond, Va. His son, Walter Henry Barnes who later married Annie Baker of Goldsboro, was a baker there and lived in corner house on James Street before it was torn down for church parking lot. His son, Leander Walter Barnes, born and died in Durham area married Hattie BARBEE. His son and my father, Walter Leander Barnes born there but moved to Virginia.
