    1. Howard Line in Wayne and Duplin Counties
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Howard Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/wUB.2ACE/751 Message Board Post: My ggggrandfather Harris Howard was born in Wayne County in 1798 according to Census Records. He was resident in Duplin County in 1840 and was unmarried. He married Duplin County Resident Jane Ann??? and they had several children, including those in my direct line, John L. who sired John Lewis, Who sired Addie Howard who was my mother. As far as I can determine, he lived all his life in Duplin County. Can anyone shed any light on his antecedents and/or on Jane Ann's Maiden name. They lived in Magnolia in l850, 1860, 1870 and moved to Rockfish in 1880. If he was living with one of his children, I am unaware of which.I lost him in 1890 and assumed he died, but that does not do much good for my bookwork. I live in Mississippi and am unable at the present time to come to North Carolina. If there are any descendants who have any information I will gladly share the information I have on the Howards who settled in Natchitoches and Sabine Parishes in Louisiana. Thanks a lo! t. You can contact me at sandrafrank@bellsouth.net.

    1. William Henry 1860's-1939 possible NC-SC-Al-FL-TX-CO
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Wadford-Watford-Wolford-Walford-Woodford-Whitford-Hubbard Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wUB.2ACE/750 Message Board Post: I am researching my maternal genealogy of my great grandfather, William Henry Whadford. His actual surname may be Wadford, Watford, Wolford, Walford, Woodford, or Whitford. My aunt recounts a story in the late 1960’s when she and my uncle drove from their Colorado home to Walter Reed Medical Center to visit a very ill relative and along their journey, she spotted from the roadway a statue-possible headstone with the name of WHADFORD on it and an old country store with the same name spelled exactly the same way. They were unable to stop and investigate and of course she now wished she had, especially since she doesn't recall the location or travel route they took. Since she doesn’t recall where this statue and store is located and I’ve often wondered if what she saw was actually spelled differently; having concentrated on the “H” beside a “W” and in her mind she saw Whadford. I believe anything is possible, since our Whadford surname spelling is unique and through all my years of research, I have never been able to find a listing of another person living or deceased with that exact same spe! lling that was not known to me. This is why I believe our acutal surname may be Wadford, Watford, Wolford, Walford, Woodford, Whitford, etc. I've researched these names without success also. I hope the mysterious statue and country store was/is in Wayne County and I can at last concentrate my research with possible concrete clues that will lead me down a definite road to answers. Here is what we know: Great-grandfather William Henry Whadford was supposedly born September 15, 1862(?) in Alabama(?) approximately during the Civil War years (different years on different censuses) and the tale told is that his family may have originally come from the Carolinas and/or Georgia to perhaps Newton, Dale County, Alabama, where he may have been born. He was orphaned at a young age when his family may have died in a "plague" possibly on a river(house)boat and the story has it he was discovered alone after a couple of days. At some point, he was sent to live with an “uncle” in Florida, but ran away with “cousins” when he was a young boy and they ended in Texas with another possible “uncle.” The family is able to trace him from his first marriage to Mary E. Havens on October 25, 1885 in Rains County, Texas where he had worked building Sulpher Springs Road. They had a son, William Henry Whadford Jr. born Oct. 15, 1886 in Sulpher Springs, Ho! pkins County, Texas and Mary soon died afterwards. My g-grandfather then married Sminthie Ellen Matlock (b. Sept. 4, 1874 Marlin, Falls County, Texas) on Jan. 14, 1889 at Cureo, Dewitt County, Texas. They had six children: Leona Josephine (f) b. Mar. 20, 1890 at Cuero, Dewitt County, Texas Bonnie Monroe (m) b. Jan. 15, 1892 at Edna, Jackson County, Texas Jessie Winnie (f) b. Sept. 26, 1893 at Edna, Jackson County, Texas Maude Belle (f) b. Jun. 26, 1895 at Edna, Jackson County, Texas Lillie Mae (f) b. Mar. 5, 1898 at Edna, Jackson County, Texas Charles Henry Claude (m) b. Jan. 9, 1902 at Paonia, Delta County, Colorado The found censuses of William Henry are: The 1900 census of Montgomery County, Texas lists: William Henry Whadford, w, m, born-Sept, year-1865 age last birthday is 30 or 39 and he is a logger (possibly in the San Jacinto Range) and his unknown parents were born in Alabama. The census date is June 4th, 1900. The 1910 Delta County, Colorado census lists: William H. Whadford, m, w, age 47 (birthyear 1863?) and as a survivor (dependent?) of the Civil War and that his father was born in Alabama and his mother was born in Florida. The census date is April 18th, 1910. The 1920 Delta County, Colorado census lists: William H. Whadford, m, w, age 56 (birthyear 1864?) and both his parents were born in North Carolina. The census date is Jan. 24th, 1920. The 1930 Delta County, Colorado census lists: William H. Wadford, m, w, age 66 (birthyear 1864?) and his father was born in South Carolina and his mother was born in Alabama. The census date is April 10th, 1930. William Henry died September 23, 1939 and is buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Delta County, Colorado. Recently, I finally found an Alabama census listing a Willie Wadford approximately the same age as my g-grandfather may/would have been. I included this information as the Hubbard last name may be some type of clue or tie you may recognize to the WHADFORD name/statue/country store and Wayne County. It is the 1870 census of Shelby County, Hillsboro, P.O., Alabama, page 423. I cannot clearly make out Ms. Wadford's first name. The listing is: Hubbard, James D. age 24, M, W, Farmer b. Alabama. Mollie, age 20, F, W, Keeping house, b. Alabama. Walter R. or B., age 1 , M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, ? (Annie, (N)Annie, Ammie short for Amelia?), age 25, F, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, Willie, age 4, M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. My thoughts are perhaps Ms. Wadford may have been a sister (some type of relative) to James D. or Mollie Hubbard, but she could have been only a boarder. I cannot locate any information on the Hubbards as well. It’s my hope someone may remember or recognize the statue/country store and point me in a search direction, offer any ideas or put me in contact with someone who may be able to offer more search possibilities. Thank you Nancy L. Compton NLCOMPTON@RMCI.NET

    1. Apology
    2. This is to apologize for a e-mail sent last Wednesday to this and other lists sent by my niece but written by me and I never intended it to be sent. Once written, my anger was released and I thought better. However, my niece can go from Lady to the word use for female dog in 4.2 seconds. I did not realize she had sent the message until the next morning. That being say, some good things came form the e-mail. 1. After a discussion with AOL, I now get it for $7.00 less. 2. Many e mails were sent in agreement. 3. The lady who ripped me off has now listed my research as hers on her web site, with the a Mulatto slave as the great grandfather of her husband. She said she did the research herself. 4. She sent to me updated information about her family with birthdays and maiden names of living people. Smart enough to ripped me off, dumb enough to send that information to a total stranger. On the downside after doing genealogical research for thirty-three years and having two articles published in The American Genealogist, I will now quit genealogy. I will leave it to the new breed of Internet Genealogists that have no sense of right or wrong. So no need to unsubscribe me for an apology, I will do that soon myself. Thank You Tonto Bernstein

    2. I also have spent 30 years or more working on my family tree.. but anything of PUBLIC RECORD is NOT private info ... .I have seen my entire family datbase on other people 's site.. some with earlier errors on my part .. those still are circulating ..as "TRUTH".. do I get angry sometimes..Yes, but that is one way my family info is shared.. I finally took my personal info off FTW..and just hung my name and telephone number in there. I do still get the occasional phone calls from distant cousins and am happy to hear from and talk to them and share everything I have .. I just think of it as sharing the flowers in my yard ..I put in the work and my neighbors share the view of pretty flowers.. but I had the real fun of it.. I picked them out. planted them , I fertilize them and enjoy the sweat of my labors.. I get a great deal of satisfaction from all that effort otherwise I would not even bother . .I do genealogy out of the Love of the search .. 2. I am so sure this information is intended to be shared. I have not yet published any of my research, but I share with everyone researching my families and they with me. I don't know where I would be without the kindness of strangers. The fact that my family's stories are told is so much more important than my getting credit for the research. While I am careful to site the materials I am given, I could honestly care less if anyone sites me. After all, somewhere down the line, I am helping someone else tell my and their family history. I understand your frustration ... perhaps this is a better way to view it. I'm never going to get rich from this, it is a labor of love.

    1. Feed up with getting ripped off.
    2. It started with Family Tree Maker. After one puts in 100 names, the software ask for one to send the data to them. Most smart people ignore the request but not all. The brother of the person I helped with my data, hit the send button and therefore giving my data that took years and years to collect to this corporation. Now, people are sourcing World Family Tree with data collected by my cousin and myself. My Family.com, Ancestry.com, Ancestery.com, Family Tree Maker.com, Rootsweb.web, genealogy.com are all .coms owned by My Family.com, Inc at Provo,UT e-mail pr@myfamilyinc.com. In case, you agree with me and would like to let them know what you think. The monopoly is so great that one cannot go any where on Internet without have one of these getting send to one of these website. Another person recently, wanted to be correct about there direct line. They promised to credit my cousin and I with research if I would supply the data. They did not keep their promised, it was easier to plagiarize. Well, Rootsweb does allow for post-em to be place on these website. At least, these people won't get away with the plagiarism. I agree with the last elected President of this country who had the nickname Give'm Hell Harry, when he said I don't give anyone hell, I tell the truth and they think it is hell
