    3. I am seeking information re Richard Martin who died in Wayne Co NC in 1786. Children of the first marriage were: 1) Lydia, b 1750, married to Jacob Flowers; 2) Mary, b 1753 married to ____ Pipkin; dec'd before her father wrote his will; 3) Aaron, b 1755, died 1795 in Wayne Co with a will; 4) Elizabeth, b 1760, married Nicholas Powell. The mother of these children is unknown; possibly her name was either Elizabeth or Sarah. Richard m2 Frances [Martin?] and they had 3 children: 1) Richard, Jr., b 1784; 2) Bitha, b 1785; and 3) Sarah "Sallie," b 1786 and married Samuel Flowers in 1806. The above 7 children were named in the will of Richard Martin, dated 1786 and probated in May 1786. Richard, Jr., received property under his father's will. Also, Richard, son of Aaron Martin, and gson of the foregoing Richard Martin, purchased property at the estate sale of his father, Aaron, all in Wayne County. I am seeking information re these last two Richard Martins. Have no lead on daughter Mary who married ___ Pipkin and can find nothing for daughter Bitha Martin other than her being mentioned in the will, and being placed under the guardianship of Samuel Harrill who was also guardian to sister Sarah. Their mother, Franky, sold to Samuel Harrill the 150 ac on which she was then living to Samuel Harrill in 1787 on condition he take her 3 children...Richard, Jr., Bitha, and Sarah "Sallie" and rear them. I have found the abstract of a will for one Samuel Harrell who died 1792 in Wayne Co with no mention of the Martin children or any compensation that might be due to them. I have also found the following: The Widow Martin was later the wife of William Jones; sale of her dower right to land to James Jones, Nov. 23, 1808. Was this Widow Martin, Frances/Franky, the widow of the foregoing Richard Martin? Any help in the reconstruction of this family will be very much appreciated....dates and places of birth and marriage of Richard Martin, his parentage, the same for Frances/Franky, his wife, and the follow up on any and all of his children. A big question here is DID THIS RICHARD MARTIN SERVE DURING THE REV. WAR OR DID HE NOT. Thanks for any and all help that I can get with this family. Margaret

Anyone searching for Ancestors that emigrated to America may find this site useful. http://www.castlegarden.org/ "CastleGarden.org offers free access to an extraordinary database of information on 10 million immigrants from 1830 through 1892, the year Ellis Island opened. Over 73 million Americans can trace their ancestors to this early immigration period." I have found several of my fellows. The database has 10 million records, but has 2 million yet to be transcribed. So it is not complete. Betty Pace

    2. CONFEDERATE NORTH CAROLINA TROOPS 47th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry 47th Infantry Regiment was organized in March, 1862, at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, North Carolina. Its companies were composed of men from Nash, Wake, Franklin, Granville, and Alamance counties. The regiment served in the Department of North Carolina until May, 1863, when it moved to Virginia. During the conflict it was brigaded under Generals Pettigrew, Kirkland, and MacRae. It fought with the Army of Northern Virginia from Gettysburg to Cold Harbor, then was involved in the long Petersburg siege south of the James River and the Appomattox Campaign. The unit lost over thirty-five percent of the 567 engaged at Gettysburg and reported 42 casualties at Bristoe and 20 at The Wilderness. It surrendered 5 officers and 72 men. The field officers were Colonels George H. Faribault and Sion H. Rogers, Lieutenant Colonels Archibald d. Crudup and John A. Graves, and Major William C. Lankford. I had two ancestors in the 47th, they were both from or around Alamance, might have been Wake. Surname, Joyner. Both died of wounds at Gettysburg. Tom Faust

    3. I am seeking information re Richard Martin who died 1786 in Wayne Co., NC., in an effort to firmly establish his identity, that of his family, and to determine if he served during the Rev. War from NC. Copies of documents I have: 1) Dated 29 Nov 1764 from Deed Abstracts of Orange Co, VA 1759-1778, by Sparacia, p. 56; Orange County, Deed Book 13, p. 506-508: Indenture between Richard Martin and Anthorite, his wife, of Orange Co. and John Long of Spotsylvania Co...for divers causes... 20 (lb)...sell all that tract whereon Martin and wife dwell on branch of Pamunkey River called White Oak, containing 200 acres being one equal moiety the patent granted Richard Martin 10 Sept 1755...bounded...William Howard..Thomas Hill, deceased. Signed by Richard Martin and Anthorite Martin --- Witnesses: William Brown, Louisa (X) Brown; John Noel, James Richardson, William Watson, William Pollock ---Recorded Orange Co. 23rd May 1765. 2) Copy of marriage bond dated 25 Oct 1783 to marry Frances Turner of Caswell Co., NC. 3) Richard Martin on NC Tax Roll 1784, Caswell Co., the year in which his son "little" Richard was born. Subsequent children born to this union were 2) Bitha in 1785, and 3) Sarah "Sallie" in 1786. 4) Copy of will from NC Archives in which Richard names his 7 children, 4 from the first marriage and 3 from the second. It was not only dated 1786 but also probated 1786 in Wayne Co. a) Lydia, b 1750, married Jacob Flowers...no follow up on this family b) Mary, b 1753, married ____ Pipkin, dec'd when father's will was written; no follow-up c) Aaron, b 1755, died 1795 with will that named only son Richard but not other 6 children; no other follow- up d) Elizabeth, b 1760, married Nicholas Powell ca 1786, perhaps in Wayne Co. N. Powell was on tax roll for Wayne Co in 1786. Elizabeth died ca 1835 in Marion Co., MS. e) "Little" Richard, b 1784 Caswell Co, d 1842, perhaps in Sumner Co, TN; m 1816 to Sarah Brown, gdau of Leanord Brown and migrated to TN with in-laws; have a theoritical list of his children f) Bitha, b 1785; nothing more for her g) Sarah "Sallie" b 1786, married Samuel Flowers 1806; nothing more for her 4) Copy of Richard's will from Abstracts of Deeds, Wayne Co; 5) Inventory of Richard's estate signed Franky (X) Martin, Wayne Co, 1788 From: NC Archives 6) Copy of bond posted by Aaron Martin 1788 for guardianship of "Little" Richard; 7) Copy of bond posted by Samuel Harrill 1788 for guardianship of Bitha and Sarah; Nos 6 & 7 from NC Archives 8) Copy from Abstracts of Wayne Co Deeds for Franky Martin to be selling to Samuel Harrill the 150 ac on which she then lived, left to her by Richard Martin, dec'd, in return for his rearing of her 3 children...Richard, Bitha, and Sarah Martin. 9) Copy of bond posted by Starling Powell, brother to Nicholas Powell and son of Douglas Powell, as guardian for "Little" Richard, responsible to Aaron Martin; From NC Archives 10) Date of bond for "Little" Richard Martin to marry Sarah Brown from early marriage bonds posted to the Caswell Co., NC., website. NSDAR in Washington, DC, has only one Richard Martin in their database. While I cannot dispute any of it for not having come from primary records, it is in almost total confilict with what I have collected for "my" Richard Martin. I shall refer to the one on file with NSDAR as the "other" Richard Martin so as to distingusih between the two Richard Martins. 1. Their Richard was born 1755 and served 2.5 yrs during the Rev War; 2. He married one Frances Turner, 25 Oct 1781, TWO years before "my" Rchard and Frances Turner, daughter of Henry Turner (died with will) were married in the same county, Caswell. 3. This Richard had 5 sons and no daughters; the sons were a) George T., b 1784; b) Lewis Martin; c) James Martin; d) Henry Martin, b 23 Feb 1793; and e) Richard Martin 4. This Richard Martin filed for a pension in 1832 and died in 1841; 5. Frances died, I believe, in 1842, apparently with a will I have not as yet discovered. Property was being sold by George T. Martin in 1844 with the title of executor. This is what leads me to believe that this Frances may have left a will. I need help in separating the identies of these two Richard Martins who have somethings in common but are so contradictory on other points such as the date of marriage, the date of death, the pension, the names of the children. Can someone help me with this project I have undertaken? Did "my" Richard serve during the Rev War or did he not? Further information for this family that might more definitively separate it from the family of the "other" Richard Martin? Any and all help will be very much appreciate. And I do hope that such help will be forthcoming. Thanks to all who respond to my query. Margaret

    1. From List Mom - A few items to think about.
    2. Kathleen Burnett
    3. Dear List Members, If you are interested in knowing about other genealogical mailing list available, one of the very best inventories of genealogical mailing lists is John Fuller's Genealogy Resources on the Internet located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html If you ever need to unsubscribe from this list or any Rootsweb list all you need to do is visit Password Central located at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will received an e-mail of all lists you belong to and from it you can unsubscribe from the ones you want to. Always know that I will be more than happy to help you if you are having problems unsubscribing, you only need to ask. Please send this request to KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net not to the entire list. If you would like to visit the Archived messages of this list, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you would like to search and from there you can search by dates. If you are having problem and I do not answer you right away, know that I will. I like many of you work full time outside of my home. I am fortunate that I can check my e-mail any time I wish, but know that there are spaces of time I cannot. I always check my e-mail each and every evening and will respond to message as quickly as possible. There are a few items I would like to suggest for the benefit of each of us. 1. When sending a posting to the list it would help if you would put the subject of your posting in the subject line. Doing this also might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. Many members are on many many lists and when they see a subject line that reads "My Ancestors" they just delete it. 2. When posting a query regarding a surname it would help all of us if you would put your surname in CAPS. This way the members can easily pick out the surnames you are looking for. On the other hand when the entire message is in CAPS we feel that we are being yelled at. 3. Please remember to delete the tags and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 5. Remember to keep your Virus protection up to date and never open any attached file unless you are 100% sure what it is and even then you are taking a chance. 6. Now, the hardest thing is when one of our own, a fellow member becomes upset about a posting from one from one of us. It is so hard not to jump in and add our two cents. I want you to know how much I appreciate it when you just let these posting go by and delete them. Know that I am behind the scenes taking care of the problem. If you ever have a concern that I might have missed a message that needs addressed you are welcome to contact me during the day at Kathleen.burnett@era.com or in the evenings at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net. 7. If your list has the gateway open, meaning the messages posted on the board also hit he list, know that every once in a while a SPAM message that is caught by the Board filter slips through the gateway and hits the list before it can be stopped. JUST DELETE IT. By responding to the list regarding he offending message, you just continue it on, and there is not one thing I can do about it at that point. Please remember, so that this list is better for each of us, the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc., in other words Spam is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net I want to thank each of you for your continued support of me and your willingness to help make this list the success it is. It is your list and is here for your benefit. If you have suggestions or comments you would like in future reports, you only need to send them to me.
