I am researching Fristus Howell, his siblings Mary, London King, Appie, Nell, Elizabeth (Bet), Tilithia, Luetta (Lou), Genetta and Preston. His parents are Jethro and Laurenda Batten Howell. Jethro's siblings are Tilethy (m Barden Pearce), Apsiela Howell (m. Moses Hill), Kissire. Jethro's parents were Charles and Sophia. I don't have proof of Charles, but think I do of Sophia, in the Census records. I've found an entry in familysearch.com listing Charles' father as Henry Howell. Of course many Scots settled in our region- so I wanted to send this info to you all! CARMINA GADELICA - WESTERN SCOTTISH FOLK/POETRY HAS JUST BEEN POSTED FOR PUBLIC DOMAIN READING. I have included the short descriptions provided, Links and Table of Contents below. SACRED-TEXTS.COM is a wonderful site with many spiritual, philosophical and other texts, that are available for reading- free to the public. (I spend many evenings online - reading here!) Enjoy! Nancy J. Capps Fayetteville, Cumberland County, NC ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CARMINA GADELICA Hymns and Incantations Ortha Nan Gaidheal Volumes I & II by Alexander Carmichael [1900] Volume I of Alexander Carmichael's collection of folk poetry from the Western Isles of Scotland. Carmichael spent years collecting folklore from the vanishing cultures of Scotland. The poems in this volume include prayers, invocations, blessings and charms. They are a synthesis of Christian and pre-Christian belief systems. Besides invoking Jesus, Mary, and the saints, a number of these call on other powers. One of these is 'Bride,' who is explained as Jesus' midwife, but who is probably Brigid, an ancient Celtic goddess. Also mentioned throughout are a triune deity which is equated to the Christian Trinity, but which may also be an echo of a set of three pagan deities. The text includes notes on seasonal observances and folk customs which are probably likewise survivals of pre-Christian customs. All of these are woven into the cycles of the year, and activities such as weaving, fishing and herding. A vivid picture of life in pre-modern rural Scotland emerges. This etext includes all of the Gaelic VOLUME 1 LINK = _http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/celt/cg1/index.htm_ (http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/celt/cg1/index.htm) (SEE CONTENTS LISTED BELOW) VOLUME 2 LINK = _http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/celt/cg2/index.htm_ (http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/celt/cg2/index.htm) (SEE CONTENTS LISTED BELOW) Volume II of Alexander Carmichael's collection of folk poetry from the Western Isles of Scotland. Volume II includes many incantations for luck, love and good health. This volume also has numerous poems about plants and animals, and extensive notes on the lore associated with them. Besides the complete English and Gaelic text of the poems, and the beautiful initials, this etext includes the extensive glossary, which occupies the last third of the book. This appendix has not been reprinted in any of the contemporary anthologies of the Carmina Gadelica, and appears for the first time on the Internet at this site. It is a treasure trove of Scottish and Celtic lore, and makes fascinating reading. The glossary includes crucial background information about the main text of the book, many shorter poems, and Carmichael's personal insights into the life and beliefs of the people he studied for many years. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CONTENTS OF VOLUME 1 Title Page Contents Introduction I. Here is an article from todays Fayetteville Observer on a Scottish Heritage event here in NC. A booth will be set up to help people trace their Scottish roots. Nancy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Published on: Thursday, Oct 20, 2005 Harnett celebrates Scottish heritage By Amneris Solano Staff writer BUIES CREEK - The campus of Campbell University will come alive with a "Wee Bit of Scotland" this weekend. The university and the Harnett County Sesquicentennial Committee are sponsoring the celebration, which honors the county's Scottish heritage. The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the campus in Buies Creek. Activities include demonstrations of Highland games such as the caber toss and the hammer throw, Scottish dancers, clan tents and vendors. A booth will be set up to help people trace their Scottish roots. Jennifer Licko, a noted Celtic singer and dancer, is scheduled to perform as well as the Cross Creek Pipes & Drums. "We're really excited about it," said Al Bain, chairman of the county's sesquicentennial committee. "We want it to be an informative event for the people of this area." Harnett County turned 150 years old in February. The county has been celebrating its anniversary with a variety of events all year. Other activities include a beard-growing contest, guided historic tours across the county and the production of a Paul Green play this fall. At 7 p.m. Saturday, the county has scheduled a Harvest Ball at the Harnett County Courthouse. Tickets are $25 in advance. Guests are encouraged to wear period garb from 1855. The "Wee Bit of Scotland" celebration is taking place alongside Campbell University's homecoming. The Scottish festival is a salute to the area's Highland ancestors who traveled up the Cape Fear River in the mid-1700s to settle in Harnett, Moore and Cumberland counties. At 10:30 a.m. Sunday, "The Kirking of the Tartan," a community worship service, has been scheduled at the university. The service consists of people wearing kilts and holding tartan flags that represent Scottish families. The families will be led into the worship service by a bagpiper. The Rev. Ian Rankine, a Presbyterian minister who is from Scotland, will conduct the service. Staff writer Amneris Solano can be reached at solanoa@fayettevillenc.com or 486-3521.

Hi June, My grandparents were Benjamin Witherington and Julia McGee Southerland. My father and mother were Benjamin Witherington and Ruth Henderson Southerland and my Great grandparents were Robert and Anna Southerland. You are so right, it was fun living and returning there. Good luck, Ruth
Saw you all talking about Mount Olive, NC. My mother who pasted away this past August was born and raised in Mt. Olive, Wayne Co., NC. She married in 1936 and moved to Virginia, where she lived the rest of her life. I still have relatives living there and the surrounding areas. I remember my mother telling me stories of people she knew, and the surname Southerland was one of them. My mother was born 1915. Her maiden name was Bizzell. She still has a brother living in Mt. Olive. I really enjoyed visiting there as a child and remembering all the fun things and my grandmother. What years were your Southerlands and their names? June
