    3. Here is a website that you may have seen -- tried to contact the compiler but email bounced. This site has information pertaining to Daniel and Lane in Wayne County and elsewhere. "Some Daniel Data for Johnston-Dobbs-Wayne-Greene-Lenoir NC" http://home.comcast.net/~p.a.miller/genealogy/docs/danieldobbswaynegreene/index.htm June was kind enough to forward this information to me. 1. Genealogy poem
    2. Bob Long shared this with me. I thought it would be nice to share with all of you who are into genealogy. June THE CHOSEN We are the chosen. In each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. Doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called, as it were, by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors, "You have a wonderful family; you would be proud of us. "How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do. It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying I can't let this happen. The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that the fathers fought and some died to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us. It is of equal pride and love that our mothers struggled to give us birth, without them we could not exist, and so we love each one, as far back as we can reach. That we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because we are they and they are the sum of who we are. So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generation to answer the call and take my place in the long line of family storytellers. That is why I do my family genealogy, and that is what calls those young and old to step up and restore the memory or greet those whom we had never known before. (unknown author)

    3. RE:1779 Isham Lane Sr voter Dobbs County -- connected to Thomas Lane 1786 Isome Lane Jr Wayne County tax list -- connected to Isome Lane We think Isham was a son of LT. Thomas LANE but we have no confirming documents. I have always wondered if the Thomas LANE of Dobbs is actually Thomas LANIER of Brunswick Co., VA, who was married to Elizabeth HICKS. There has to be a link in this bunch back to Granville County, NC because DNA proves my DANIEL bunch are related to the Chesley DANIEL and Judith Woodson CHRISTIAN family of Granville County, NC. 3. Good afternoon all, I've been casually following the discussion...regarding JOHN SMITH...on both lists. *S* I have to admit...that I also have one of these elusive little critters...in my NC family tree. Actually...I'm the lucky one...with two of them...to try to research and...to keep straight. *S* One that arrived in the Carolina's...before 1765...and another arrived in Charleston SC in 1796. Fortunately...you've all been discussing a line that pre-dates my second one...by a 'few' years. Well....for once...the dates save me from trying to sort out two lines. I have spent many many years...researching my family tree, but with a name as common as...John SMITH...I have to admit ....that I have left that one......mostly alone.... Here's all that I have on my earliest...John SMITH...just to see if there's possibly anyone out there that might...have a clue or two...for me to chase after. *S* John SMITH b. before 1747, location unknown d. unknown, location unknown m. ____________________also unknown son: John Jackson SMITH, by tradition he is referred to as "Jr" b. 1767-68, "Province of Carolina" d. 1839, TN [probably Bedford or Coffee Co. William ROBERTS, in TN 9. John Jackson SMITH, III, b. 1813; TN; m. Jane ROBERTS, in TN As you can see...by the naming pattern...this looks to probably be of British ancestry ...and I have long leaned towards either Scottish or Irish. *S* My line, on my father's side, is Mary "Polly" SMITH...m. James C. GREEN. ...Polly was b. in Jackson Co. GA...and migrated with everyone else in the family to TN. This SMITH family migrated from NC...circa 1795...to around the Jackson Co. 3. Thought I would try your suggestion but the screens must have changed since you last visited the site. This is how I found MARS: Click on http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/ Select "State Archives" shown under the center box labeled "Historic Resources" which then takes you to "MARS" at http://www.ncarchives.dcr.state.nc.us/logicrouter/servlet/LogicRouter?PAGE=child&OUTPUTXSL=childbrowse.xsl&hier=h1&tree=c&api_1=PUB_DISP_COLL&hier=builder&tree=c&api_2=GET_SEARCH_PARM&hier=h1&tree=o&api_3=PUB_DISP_COLL&hier=builder&tree=o&ds_svAPI_searchparm=4&api_4=GET_SEARCH_PARM&ds_svAPI_sortoptions=5&api_5=GET_USER_SORT_OPTIONS&pm_POI=52&hier=h1.1&tree=o&pm_GS=100&api_6=GET_CHILDREN_GROUPS&pm_POI=52&hier=h1.1.1&tree=o&pm_CGI=1&api_7=GET_GROUP_CONTENTS Since the last item is a VERY long URL, you might want to start at the beginning. There are lots of other interesting items showed on these screens so taking a look around is not a bad idea.
