The only birth year I know that is correct in 1773, the year Penelope was born, age 73 in 1846 when she died. The rest I assume were about 1750-1775, or there abouts. John R. Rae, That, I ca believe because Isham, Sr. was at least 21 in 1759 when we find him on deeds in Dobbs County and in 1761 when he is appointed a Captain in the Dobbs County militia. I figure he was about 30 in 1761 making him born about 1730, dying in 1800, age 70, about the typical lifespan for most of this bunch, more or less. John R. Clarke 229-228-1961 2417 N. Rae, Know Pam Miller real well - we are DANIEL cousins. That "John" you see referenced on the page you linked is -- me. Robert Williams DANIEL was my great grandfather ( 1809-1865) of Jefferson County, GA. He was named for his uncle, Robert Williams, who married his aunt, Sally LANE. John R. Rae Jean, The "best evidence" is a tombstone, because the seldom lie and cannot be changed without some difficulty. Family histories and county memorial books are often wrong. John R. Rae and Cousin Frank, I do not know which is correct. A lot of this is like the TARVER information in Burke and Jefferson County, GA - all wrong. This is why I look for family connections to any marriage and when I do not see them, I know something is wrong. This is why the WILSON connection to William DAWSON (father of Luce LANE?, wife of Isham) smells - no known family connection to the Wilson's that I am aware of. Hang in there - we will get it straightened out because incorrect information will not stand the test of time, especially over the lineages of several or more families. John R. Cullen moved to Jackson, Madison Co. TN. This may help to explain why you do not see a lot on Cullen LANE. He was the black sheep of the family. This happened to my wife's family but their only mistake was - one of her ancestors married a Mormon. <<< Isaac Lane, a prominent bishop in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and founder of Lane College, was born a slave in Jackson, Tennessee on March 3, 1834. His mother, Rachel, was a slave on the plantation belonging to his white father, Cullen Lane. Isaac enjoyed certain privileges as the master's illegitimate son and was able to attend religious services held by white Methodists. However, he never received a formal education, and he learned to read and write on his own. In 1853 Isaac married Frances Anne Boyce, a slave on a nearby plantation, and brought her to live with him on Cullen Lane's property. Isaac Lane, a prominent bishop in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and founder of Lane College, was born a slave in Jackson, Tennessee on March 3, 1834. Shortly thereafter he experienced a religious conversion and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, South on September 11, 1854. Although white Methodist officials denied Lane's petition to preach because of his race, he was granted an exhorter's license in 1856. A decade later he was ordained a deacon and an elder at a regional conference where African American members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South gathered to debate a formal break from the white congregation. A special session of the newly formed Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in 1873 elected Lane bishop. In this new role, Lane formed conferences and built churches throughout Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, while focusing on the higher education of both clergy and lay people. To further his cause Lane purchased four acres of land in Jackson, Tennessee in 1882 for the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church High School, which was later renamed Lane College. Lane retired from the bishopric in 1914, but continued to organize churches throughout the Midwest. He died in Jackson, Tennessee on December 5, 1937 at the age of 103. In the Autobiography of Bishop Isaac Lane, LL.D.: with a Short History of the C.M.E. Church in America and of Methodism (1916) Lane discusses the important events in his life while educating his readers on the C.M.E. Church's significance in Methodist history. Lane fervently defends church segregation in the postwar South, arguing that the break between African Americans and whites in social, civic, and religious life would some day lead to greater harmony. After confirming the need for African Americans to separate from the white Methodist Episcopal Church, South and create their own religious community, Lane details the formation of the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church and acknowledges the many individuals who were instrumental during its fledgling years. He then offers a chronology of his own life, describing his difficult years in slavery, his subsequent religious conversion, and his Methodist affiliation. As Lane discusses his increasing involvement in the ministry, he provides a thorough account of the Church's expansion as well as the founding of Lane College. The narrative closes with several extracts from his sermons. As I mentioned some time ago, I recently discovered the surname of my ancestor Rhody who married Samuel Lane. That's how this all this started. Samuel Lane and Rhody (Tomlinson) Lane joined my other ancestors in Beaufort County around 1840. Rhody is dau of Thomas Tomlinson and Mary 'Polly" Rountree. Samuel Lane remains a mystery. If anyone has interest in the will of Samuel Lane, it is posted online here: http://home.earthlink.net/~rjfamily/data/nc/docnc.htm If you have ancestors in Beaufort County or Craven County, then you may be interested in my website, Families of North Carolina. Rae Jean, I have posted some time ago records of Edith and her family on the Houston County web site. You might wish to go there to see same. Do not think Bryan/Bryant misspoke. Can send you a copy of the deposition if you will send me your snail mail address. To my knowledge Isham Lane never owned land N. of Nahunta Swamp nor did any of his children with the possible exception of Cullen. About the only way you can keep all of this straight is thur land records. Frank Hooks Thompson

No, the old MARS is no longer available. We have moved all the land grant records (which listed streams and rivers) into our new MARS system, available at www.ncarchives.dcr.state.nc.us. You can do a keyword search throughout all the collections now. Land grants are filed in the collections referred to as State Records since they are filed in the Secretary of State Office records.

John, I have been following your posts on Lane family with Rae Jean in Tennessee with interest. You state that John Lane who married Edith and died in 1820 was son of Isham Lane. I have a deposition dated Oct.17 1840 by Bryant/BryanLane (my ancestor) which states that his brother was the above John Lane and that their father was Bryan Lane and grandfather Thomas Lane. Think John son of Isham is another John. The widow of John Lane, Edith and most of her family moved to Houston Co. GA after his death. This John Lane's land on the North Side of Nahunta Swamp is still in our family today. Frank
How interesting. Do you think there is a possibility that your Bryan Lane mis-spoke in the 1840 deposition and meant to say his father was Isham Lane (Sr) son of Thomas Lane? Are there deeds, estate records, wills or other documents you have seen that confirm your Bryan Lane's father was Bryan Lane son of Thomas Lane? Do you think the Edith Lane on 1820 Wayne County census was the same person as the one I posted information on (repeated for clarification at end of this message). The Edith Lane (suggested wife of John Lane son of Isham Lane Senior, on 1810 census entry for John Lane) was born 1766-1784 if actually age 26-44. The Edith Lane (suggested wife of same John Lane) shown on 1820 Wayne County census was age 45+ which indicates she was born before 1775. Do you know the birth surname of Edith, her birth date, parents or siblings? Rae Jean __________ Deed dated 18 Feb 1832 Wayne County: Bryan & Penelope Lane, Daniel & Elizabeth Underhill, Thomas & Mary Reaves to John Harris (part of survey granted to Samuel Herring for 400 acres; sold to Brazil Kornegay by Sheriff of Duplin County 10 Dec 1807; sold by said Kornegay to John Harris deed 10 Oct 1819; devised by will of John Harris Sr to seven daughters Penelope, Elizabeth, Nancy, Rachel, Sally, Susan, Edith) [RJ NOTE: This deed makes me wonder if John Lane marr Edith HARRIS since brother Bryan Lane marr Penelope HARRIS. John Lane on 1810 Wayne census but died between 1811 and 1819 since Edith Lane appears on 1820 Wayne census with Head of Household entry 020201-10201.] __________ ----- Original Message ----- From: <Gvlthompson@cs.com> To: <NCWAYNE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 11, 2006 1:45 PM Subject: Re: [NCWAYNE] Lane records -- Tax, Voter, Census John, I have been following your posts on Lane family with Rae Jean in Tennessee with interest.
