Looking for information and pictures of the old Zionville School. My great-grandparents Dalton Van Burn Winebarger & Lula Miller Winebarger donated the land for the school to be built. The only information that I've found is this - "Development of public education in Watauga Co., NC" by Tom Corbitt mentions the old Zionville School as one of the "District 8" schools in a 1937 report. If you can help, please contact me! Sherry Winebarger-Reeter m-sreeter@embarqmail.com
I attended the "Mable Elementary School" in the early 1940s. Could this be the school you are talking about? I do not know of any other school in that area. It was about 2 miles from Zinoville and the TN state line. I can ask my older cousins who would have attended that school, but I do not recall any other school in that area. John E. Mabel School replaced the old Zionville School which was still around as late as 1937. The Watauga Co. School System has had no information available in their archives for the Zionville School, Winebarger School or Miller School but know they did exist. If anyone can help with info. and/or pictures for any 3 of those schools I would be most appreciative. Also, I am desperately searching for who donated the land for the Winebarger School and the old Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church. I live in VA and cannot research the records at the Watauga Co. Courthouse so I am hoping one of you wonderful folks have a scoop for me. Thanks!
