    1. [NCWATAUG] Re: Mast's Mill
    2. Bob Isaacs
    3. I'm posting this in response to a query by a board member requesting information on Mast's Mill. If there has already been a response to this query, my apologies to the list. John Preston Arthur, in his HISTORY OF WATAUGA COUNTY, NC, references the location of Mast's Mill on page 173. In writing about Camp Mast, Arthur states "Captain Price had a company of Home Guards at Jefferson, while Major Harvey Bingham had two companies at a camp on Cove Creek, four miles above Valle Crucis, which had been named in honor of the Mast Family. It was just below the old Mast Mill, now called Pete Mast's Mill." This would put the location of the Mill in the portion of Ashe County that became Watauga in 1849 and along Cove Creek in the communities of Amantha or Mast, NC along Old U.S. - 421 in western Watauga County. Though both of these communities no longer have their own post offices, the old road signs noting that you're crossing into them are still in place on Old U.S. 421. Hope this helps, Bob _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
