Hello, list members! I am a former resident of Asheville who is now living in Illinois. At the request of The Globe Pequot Press, I am writing a book to be called "Disasters and Heroic Rescues of North Carolina." One of the chapters in this book will be about the flood of August, 1940, particularly its effects in the Deep Gap area of Watauga County. I am using the following sources: - A Disastrous Flood by Ivery C. Greene - The Watauga Democrat newspaper from August 1940 - History of Watauga County by Daniel Jay Whitener - A History of Watauga County by John Preston Arthur - Miscellaneous other sources I would very much like to correspond with anyone who remembers experiences during the flood, but especially members of the Deep Gap families mentioned in Ivery Greene's book. I am wondering, for example, if B.L. Greene, who was 7 years old at the time of the flood, is still living. I am also interested in obtaining pictures to go with this chapter in my book. I am in contact with the usual sources for such pictures (State Archives, UNC Chapel Hill, libraries, etc.), but would be very interested in any photos in your possession that show the effects of this disaster in the Deep Gap community.
