    1. [NCWATAUG] Ray family, Holmon midwife
    2. Artie Martino
    3. Around 1960-63 my mother took me to Boone to meet a "Mrs. Holmon" who was a midwife and one-time neighbor who'd helped with my unplanned home delivery. My older brothers and sisters have enjoyed complaining to me about being forced to leave warm beds in the middle of the night to walk in snow drifts above their heads. A rope was tied from our front door out into the yard to help guide them through the mid-December snowstorm. I don't know if this "Mrs. Holmon" is connected to Deborah Holmon's family but I've found so many unusual connections in genealogy research that I wouldn't be too surprised. I also have a Ray connection through my grandmother, Maggie Jenett Ray. I treasure a circa 1911 family photograph showing many of Alec Clyde and Aylie Watson Ray's children; my two-year-old mother is sitting in the lap of her grandfather, Alec, and a six-month old aunt is sitting in my grandmother Maggie's lap. All/most of the women are wearing clothes made from one bolt of cloth while the men have shirts made from another. I digitally restored/enlarged the photograph to fit into an antique frame so could e-mail a copy if requested. Most branches of my family settled in NC (NC was considered part of Virginia in 1600s) but I've lived almost 25 years in Rhode Island. Within walking distance from my workplace, I recently learned the 1688 marriage contract of my GGGGGGGGreatgrandmother, Marie Arnaud Parlier is likely archived in the Old Washington County Jail, home of Pettaquamscutt Historical Society. They're only open two afternoons a week so I hope to go tomorrow to search for it. The Pettaquamscutt Historical Society collects and preserves materials relating to a ten square mile portion of Washington County known as "the Narragansett Country," lands acquired from native Americans by purchase in 1657 and encompassing all or parts of the towns of South Kingstown, North Kingstown, Narragansett and Charlestown. The collections include approximately 200 linear feet of manuscripts, consisting of family materials, genealogical files, church, business, and organizational records, and some South Kingstown town records. The Society serves as a depository for the Wakefield Baptist Church (1781-1995) and the Kingston Hill Gardeners. 3. Artie: If your Rays go back to Col. Jesse, then we are cousins. My Grandfather was (Irwin) Layne Ray. I've traced my paternal Ray line back to William & Elizabeth Ray. I would love to see the picture you have. My father, Roy Layne Ray, is ill at the moment and a picture of old relatives would surely cheer him up. I'd be willing to pay for a print of whatever you have.
