The Tennessee Society of the Sons of the American Revolution will be forming a new chapter in Carter county which will serve neighboring counties, including Watauga, Ashe and Avery Counties in North Carolina. The new SAR chapter will be called Fort Watauga after the fort at Sycamore Shoals State Park. It is estimated that there were over 1000 patriots at Fort watauga at one time or another especially during The Kings Mountain Campaign. The Overmountain men played a significant role at Kings Mountain. Their backwoods fighting skills helped win the Battle of Kings Mountain for the American Revolution cause. The new SAR chapter will be working with Sycamore Shoals State Park to help recreate and portray historical events in the Watauga region that will honor the Overmountain men for their couragous efforts in the fight for Independence. The new SAR chapter will also be honoring the patriots buried in the region by holding graveside services and placing a SAR marker beside the grave. It is estimated that there are over 200 patriots are buried in Carter county and the surrounding counties. If your Patriot ancestor was at Fort Watauga or fought at Kings Mountain with the Overmountain Men, we would love to have you join the new chapter. The Fort Watauga chapter will be holding an enrollment meeting on November 20, 2004 at 2pm at the Sycamore Shoals State Park. The Sycamore Shoals State Park will also be holding their annual Thanksgiving Feast event also on this date. So come for the food and celebration and honor your patriot ancestor by joining the new Fort Watauga SAR chapter.
