Greetings folks! I’m still working on that Watauga County manuscript and wanted to pose another question. Does anyone have any information (family stories?) on the 1930 election fraud case that so engulfed Watauga County? I’ve got a selection of newspaper articles from the Watauga Democrat, and I hope to look through the Wilkesboro newspaper on Friday - Wilkesboro was were the trial took place. Please find below a list of names of men who were indicted and tried. The first indictments went out against sixteen men: J. Smith McBride, Chauneey Moody, Roy Wilson, Henry J. Hardin, Lee Mast, Ed S. Williams, J. B. Horton, Allen A. Perry, John E. Brown, Eddie B. Hagaman, Jerd Shull, Claude Edmisten, Henry Mast, Charlie McConnell, Will Rominger, and Walt Ward. The indictments read that the “defendants conspired to injure, oppress, threaten and intimidate Watauga County citizens who were attempting to exercise their civil rights... [and] also that a number of citizens were prevented from exercising their civil rights.” More indictments were issued in the following days. A. D. Wilson, R. L. Clay, W. Roy Johnson, P. C. Wike, A. L. Gross, Luther South, T. L. Mast, Troy Norris, Hooper Hendrix, W. Hardin Brown, Alfred Adams, D. A. Brown, C. S. Stevenson, Clint Norris, B. Cleve Johnson, Henry J. Hardin, Raleigh Cottrell, Howard Cottrell, C. D. McNeill, W. S. Moretz, Harrison Miller, and A. E. South, clerk of the Watauga County Superior Court, were all charged with conspiracy and that the “purported conspiracies were carried out with the display and employment of firearms and other deadly weapons.” It seems that everyone tried was acquitted.
