My grandfather, Henry Cordell Taylor was a long time resident in the Valle Crusis area and I knew him well. I have recently located my great grandfather Jacob Zachariah Taylor and Elizabeth Emmaline Taylor in a small cemetery on top of a hill overlooking the Valle just off Clark's Creek road. Zack was born 10 Feb 1846 in Watauga Co, and died 10 Oct, 1900 in Avery Co., NC. Eliz. was b. 19 March 1852 and died 9 Feb, 1923. I will really appreciate any info on Zach's father, Jacob Taylor b. 1806-1810....it appears... in Lower Creek, Caldwell Co, NC. His wife was Matilda Humphrey(s) b. abt 1821.. The 1850 census has them living in King's Creek , Caldwell Co. Jacob was 40 and Matilda 29; The 1860 census has them living inWatauga Co with Jacob 53 and Matilda 39. The children's names still match up.. Then, in 1870 the census finds them in Carter Co Tenn with Jacon 60 and Matilda 51. At this juncture the 1880 Watauga Co. NC census shows "mother" Matilda Taylor, age 65 living with Zachariah and Emmaline Taylor and their kids, my grandfather Henry Cordell, among them. Jacob's name is missing and I assume he died...probably in Carter Co Tenn. It's possible he's buried there. Thanks for any help, including Jacob's father, John Taylor. I'm pretty certain that he roamed through the Watauga Co - Caldwell Co area. His wife 's name was Barbara Hoffman. I don't know a lot more about them except that John had something of a reputation as a hunter. One family legend referred to him as "Big" John" ...but we could be talking about two different people. Seems there were a number of "John Taylors"! Many Thanks. Willard (Bill) Taylor [email protected]
