By golly---you knew my great Grandfather JOHN F. SMITH. He followed those resolutions to the letter. He was born in SC----or GA, depending on his mood. He was White---or Mulatto---depending on his mood. He apparently had a great sense of humor 'cause I can't even find his death certificate, altho he died here in Fort Worth. Now, I know why I keep butting my head against that "brick wall". Thanks for letting me know. I would think it was named for David Miller who was from that area and served in the House of Represenatives in the 1800's. There are a lot of his descendants in that area. Seeking any information and a picture on the Miller School which was located on the banks of Meat Camp Creek. Also, do we know how that school got it's name? Thank you! Sherry Winebarger-Reeter m-sreeter@embarqmail.com
I am seeking information on the Winebarger School which burned down in the 1950s. I would like to know the location and how did it get it's name (did a Winebarger family donate the land or something and, if so, which Winebarger family)? Thank you for your help and I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas! Sherry m-sreeter@embarqmail.com
I have an elderly relative who firmly believes that our De Marcus Winebarger has been connected to the wrong John Winebarger family. He "thinks" the John Winebarger who supposedly created the Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church and Winebarger School was the Festler boy who was adopted by the Winebarger family and was NOT the father of our De Marcus Winebarger who was born Dec. 25, 1843 Catawba Co., NC - died March 28, 1928 & is buried in Hopewell Methodist Cemetery near Meat Camp. All accounts I have received have been that De Marcus Winebarger was the youngest son of John (Festler) Winebarger born about 1789 - died before 1870 perhaps in Watauga Co., NC. John was adopted by Cunrod Winebarger, Sr. in Lincoln Co., NC after his "Festler" birth parents died aboard ship coming to America from Germany. John married Nellie Oxford and they resided in Lincoln Co., Catawba Co. & Watauga Co., NC. I am trying to test out my elderly relative's theory with you folks who know so much about prominent families of Watauga Co. and would greatly appreciate your input. Thank you! He was 100. A noted muralist who continued to paint into his 100th year, Tompkins was director of the Hartford Art School when it merged with the Hartt School of Music and Hillyer College to form the University of Hartford in 1957. Tomkins, who lived in Bloomfield during his later years, died Thanksgiving Day, and his death was announced Thursday. This summer, a collection of Tompkins work was exhibited at the university's Silpe Gallery to mark his 100th birthday, the 50th anniversary of the university's founding and the 130th anniversary of the art school's founding. An art professor for many years, Tompkins defined himself foremost as a painter. "Alan had a singular ability to articulate his discipline, and that's that of a painter," said Linda Powers Tomasso, who studied art with Tompkins in the 1990s and wrote the book "Alan Tompkins - Painter." "He above all wanted to be recognized as a painter," she said. Born in New Rochelle, N.Y., Tompkins graduated from Columbia University in 1929 with a degree in art history and in 1933 from the Yale Art School, where he studied mural painting. During the Depression, he was commissioned by the federal government to paint four murals for post offices in Indiana and North Carolina. "Daniel Boone on a Hunting Trip in Watauga County," remains at the Boone, N.C., post office. His works never fit one style, Tomasso said. His early paintings were representational, but by the end of his career he focused less on representing the likenesses of individuals and more on the expression of character. "He understood, as a painter, the power of graphic ideas," Tomasso said. After 12 years as head of the Hartford Art School, Tomkins continued to teach there until 1974. In 1990, he moved to the Duncaster Retirement Community in Bloomfield, where set up a small studio and either painted or drew almost daily until shortly before his death.Of the 45 paintings displayed at the university this summer, many were painted in the past 20 years. "It was a wonderful show, and Alan seemed to be a force that would not end," said Power Boothe, dean of the art school. "He was always planning his next painting and working on his next exhibition." A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Jan. 19 at Duncaster, which will be followed by a reception and exhibition of Tompkins' work, including one piece that he worked on just before his death. Hi Eddie, There is a Stean mentioned in this index of the 1840 census for Grayson, which points to page 317 of the census, but I haven't found that census anywhere online yet. One would think, if there's an index for it, it would be there somewhere, but I sure can't find it. You could order it for $20 on CD from S-K Publications. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/grayson/census/1840indx.txt Watauga was Ashe County in 1840. Have you ruled out their residence as Ashe Co. for that census? Michelle
Hi, I am looking for Amanda STEEN and her parents. I do not think they were in Grayson Co. very long. I have a note of a 1828 Personal property Tax list with Joseph STEEN on it. Amanda STEEN md. in Scott Co. 1860 and gave Grayson Co., VA as her place of birth. This Joseph may have been her father. But I believe they left Grayson Co. about 1840. I have not been able to find a 1840 Grayson Co. census to check. But there is a matching Joseph STEEN in Watauga Co., NC in the 1850-60 census. There are no other records I have found. If you have anything please let me know. -eddie VA
Does anyone have the Winebarger crest or coat of arms they would share? Thanks! Sherry m-sreeter@embarqmail.com
I spotted this while looking for Boyd ancestors in Patrick Co., VA, records online. The daughter of Samuel Hicks/Hix, Elizabeth, marries a McMillion in Patrick Co. ca1805. I suspect this is the Samuel who lived in what was then Ashe Co. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/patrick/vitals/marriages/mcmlln2.txt Michelle
I'm sorry but I don't have anything on the Moretz-Todd marriage.
