Hi Everyone! I am searching for two brothers...Robert Elijah Bryant b. abt 1883 and Lute J. Bryant b.unk. They both married Townsend girls, Magdalena and Catherine (daughters of Timothy). Robert married Magdalena (Maggie) April 22, 1900 in Watauga Co., NC. Both of these families then moved to WA state. Descendents remember brothers saying Bryant family was from Boone. Is there a link here to the Battle/Lewis Bryant/Bryan families? I have info on the Townsend lineage, desperately wanting to "finish" up Bryan/Bryant side! Michelle
Hello all, I need a big favor, can anyone who has Vol. I of the Watauga Hertiage Book, send me a copy of that page. In my haste while in Boone this summer, I copied 293 twice but no 294. I really need this info. Anyone's help will be much appreciated. Gail Raczek
Hello: I am looking for a book entitled " Sketch of the Triplett Family" by Jessie Triplett Ferguson of Wilksboro, North Carolina March 1922. I am interested in knowing if it has information in it about William Triplett and his 2 sons Micajah and Nimrod having died during the Revolution of Measles. If the book is available, I can order it via Interllibrary loan through my local library. Thanks Ilene Jones [email protected]
Death of Noah Mast - Noah MAST was born in Watauga county, in North Carolina, Feb. 20, 1812, and died at his home, four miles southeast of Skidmore, Mo., Feb 7, 1897. He moved to Buchanan county, Missouri, in 1839, where he married Miss Catharine ROLLEN. Together they came to Nodaway county in 1842, and entered government land on which he lived until he died. Perhaps he was the oldest settler at his death in the county. Six children blessed their home, five of whom survive him. There are 23 grandchildren living and 12 dead; four great-grandchildren living and one dead. Under the ministry of Rev. Thomas Hedgepeth he gave his heart to God and united with the M.E. church, South, in January, 1874, since which time he has been a consistent member of the church at Skidmore. His funeral was preached by his pastor, Rev. James M. Rogers, to a large number of kinsmen and friends, and his remains laid to rest in the Groves cemetery to await the resurrection day. "He cometh to his grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in its season." XX. (from an unknown newspaper/but possibly the "New Era, Skidmore, Nodaway, Missouri) Shared with me by Mike, Thanks, Mike..Diane Spoo +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From: Buchanan County, Missouri Marriage records: Book A page 71 ....The undersigned do certify that NOAH MAST and CATHERINE ROWLAND was join together in the Holysights of matrimony on the 14th day of August, 1842 by me....M.C.Farrell, J.P. Information I found recently posted on a genealogy webpage John Lafayette Adams 1804-1909, son of Squire and Mary Greene Adams, m. Sarah Hartley, dau. of John Young and Mary Amos Farthing, on 8/15/1850. Supposedly they had a daughter named Lucinda b. 1857 In the census transcripts between 1860 and 1880, I have John listed with a wife named Elvira in all 3 census records, with two daughters named Lucinda. Jane Lucinda b. bet. 1850-1851 and Lucinda b. 1857 Could it be that John married Sarah Farthing and she died after giving birth to Jane Lucinda, in which case John Adams married Elvira? Or could it be that Sarah's middle name was Elvira? Tom
Can someone email me offlist who lives in Boone/Bethel area. I am planning on relocating there and need some information. My wife's GGG Grandfather, J. Tennessee Adams, was born in Watauga, Carter County, TN in 1835. I have no idea who his parents were, but given the political situation in Northeast Tennessee from about 1790 on I suspect the Adams in that area were probably related to the Adams across the mountains. If anyone researching the Adams families can shed any light on my J. T. Adams I would like to hear from you. I will be glad to share what I have. J. Tennessee served in the Union army in the Civil War and is buried in the Mountain Home National Cemetery near Jonesboro, TN. Thank you, Forrest L. Fuller ([email protected])
I can't address the flag design, but I can identify the D. C. Dugger who wrote the second letter and was the bearer of that flag. David Crockett Dugger of Vilas, Watauga Co., NC (5-6 miles West of Boone) was born 13 Apr 1838 at Vilas, the son of William H. and Eunice (Mundy) Dugger and husband of.Mary E. Mundy. He died 26 May 1920 and is buried, along with most of that line of Duggers, in the Howell Cemetery at Vilas. David Crockett was the brother of my grandfather, Williem Eben Dugger, and I have more info on that line if anyone's interested. Many thanks, Michael, for providing me with a most interesting sidelight to my Uncle Dave's life. Such information as this adds some warmer lifeblood to a cold database. Best Regards, Gene. Eli Mast Harman married Sarah E. Blair on 3/22/1874 in Watauga Co. According to information attributed to Terry L. Harmon's book, Eli and Sarah had a daughter, Lilly F., born 4/27/1875. Sarah Blair Harman died May 1876 and Eli is listed with his parents in the 1880 Laurel Creek Twp. census, as a school teacher, but Lilly is not listed. There is a Lilly F. Harman, age 5, listed with Cicero Decatur Harman and his wife Polly S. Greene Harman, living with Seney Greene as head of household, in Blowing Rock Twp., Family # 56. This Lilly F. is listed as a granddaughter of Seney Greene. The only other Lillie listed in the 1880 census is Lillie E. Harmon, 6, granddaughter of Eli George and Susan Yelton Harmon and enumerated with them in Laurel Creek, Family # 120. Lillie E. is the daughter of Eli Finley and Louisa Jane Harman. Lillie E. is said to have married a Lee Harmon, but I have not been able to determine who his parents were. >From this census information, it would appear that perhaps Eli Mast Harman and Sarah E. Blair Harman did not have a daughter before Sarah died or if so, that Lillie F. died at an early age. Benjamin Franklin Harman ( brother of my g-grandfather, William Roby Harman ) married Lillie F. Harman on 6/13/1893 in Watauga Co. and she died 4/9/1905 Watauga Co. I have not found where she is buried. I would greatly appreciate any information that pertains to the above persons. Tom
Greetings folks! I recently ran across these two articles in the Watauga Democrat, dating January 27, 1898, and February 3, 1898. Does anyone have any other information regarding the flag of the "Watauga Minute Men?" Thanks, Michael C. Hardy Editor Democrat: I have heard of a flag bearing the inscription, "Watauga Minute Men," that was captured by a Yankee in time of the war, the bearer of the flag having been killed. Learn if there was a company formed in your county, with such a flag whose bearer was killed. If so, let me know if the surviving members of the company want this flag and I shall try to get it. If possible, give me the name of the bearer and the battle in which he was killed. I think there was such a company, but do not remember whose it was. J[oseph ] W. Todd Editor Democrat. In reply to Capt. Todd, of Jefferson, concerning the flag of the "Watauga Minute Men," I will say that I am the man who carried that flag from Watauga county to High point under Young Farthing of this county, as our Capt. This Co. was known as Co. "E" in the 37th North Carolina troops. When we reached High Point the sub flags were laid aside, and we went under the regimental flag. From this point we moved to Raleigh and from there on to New bern, where, to my recollection I saw the last of the flag bearing the inscription, "Watauga Minute Men." At this place we took up winter quarters until the battle ensued, and in this we were put to fight and fell back to Kinston, N.C., and immediately moved from there to Gordsonsville, VA. Where we took up march for Hanover Court House, at which place we went forthwith into battle. Our Co. being sent off on picket, was cut off from the regiment. Capt. Farthing with his company now fell back to the banks of the Permonehy river, where we were all captured, save 8 or 9, they having swum the river for safety, I being one of the pitiful number. The probability is that the flag was captured at the surrender of this, our company. We, the survivors of said Co., would be pleased to have the flag. D. C. I wanted to write a quick apology for accidentally sending the Watauga List a copy of a joke item about Sales that I was sending my staff at my hotel. I hit Watauga instead of Wang, Velma in my address book. Please delete it and forgive me. As you all know I am reseaching Parsons, Dixon, Phipps, Ward, Sturgill, Osborne, Anderson, Howell, Gambill and Halsey etc in Allegany, Wilkes and Grayson Counties where my folks live. Someone from the Watauga List who alerted me to my mistake asked me what this joke had to do with genealogy...Actually one day it will have to do with my own genealogy :)) I am a General Manager of a hotel in New York City and with the horror we have suffered in NYC this past three weeks I sent a joke to brighten my staff's mood on Monday morning. I apologise again. Carole Conrad NY Helmsley Hotel 42nd Street NYC __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Listen to your Yahoo! War. My ancestor and 2 of his sons died there during a measles epidemic during the Rev. War. Can you give me any information about the Camp, or the Measles epidemic? I would be interested in the battles fought there, and if there is any record of those who died during the measles epidemic. Ilene Jones

I'm posting this in response to a query by a board member requesting information on Mast's Mill. If there has already been a response to this query, my apologies to the list. John Preston Arthur, in his HISTORY OF WATAUGA COUNTY, NC, references the location of Mast's Mill on page 173. In writing about Camp Mast, Arthur states "Captain Price had a company of Home Guards at Jefferson, while Major Harvey Bingham had two companies at a camp on Cove Creek, four miles above Valle Crucis, which had been named in honor of the Mast Family. It was just below the old Mast Mill, now called Pete Mast's Mill." This would put the location of the Mill in the portion of Ashe County that became Watauga in 1849 and along Cove Creek in the communities of Amantha or Mast, NC along Old U.S. - 421 in western Watauga County. Though both of these communities no longer have their own post offices, the old road signs noting that you're crossing into them are still in place on Old U.S. 421. Hope this helps, Bob _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
