    3. Greetings folks! Is the "Hervey" Bingham that served Watauga County as the State Senator in 1876 the same Harvey Bingham that was Major of the 11th Battalion of North Carolina Home Guard and later a lawyer? Yes, I know that there are two Harvey Bingham's in Watauga County at this time period. Thanks, Michael C. 3. Does anyone have the 1910 Watauga Co., NC Census who would do a look-up for me please? I need the information on William C. Eggers, Lillie Eggers and Albert L. Eggers, all listed on page 39 of the census. Ages, birthdates and where they were born would be a big help. Also the township. Lillie A. Eggers pg 40. Her age and date of birth? On the 1900 Watauga Co., NC census, Lillie A. (Isaacs) Eggers is listed in the household of her son Emsley Robert Eggers. Also listed is her youngest son, William, born 1883 in TN. Lillie's husband, Noah Eggers, born, 1845, son of Joel and Sarah Wilson Eggers, was reportedly buried in Carter Co., TN, where they lived before Noah died and Lillie returned to Watauga County. The only date of death that I have for Noah is 1872, however, this would be incorrect if William was not born until 1883. Any help here would be appreciated. Janice Isaacs Pilkington

    1. [NCWATAUG] Angeline dau of Riley EGGERS
    2. I am so excited! I believe I have torn down the proverbial wall! A while back I received my biological grandfathers S.S. Application. He stated his father was John EGGERS & mother was Angeline EGGERS. I have never been able to find them together in Watauga Co. on the 1900, 1910 or 1920 censuses. Recently I received a letter from an Uncle. He told me that his mother said that his father, Arlie EGGERS, had said he took his mothers maiden name because he hated his father. Today I found Angeline EGGERS in the 1880 Watauga Co Census. She was 1 year old in the house hold of Riley EGGERS. Could this be Arlies mother? Riley is still in Watauga Co in 1910, but no Angeline. Arlie was born in 1906, Watauga Co. I need to find who Angeline married. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am so pleased at this information but want to push on while the iron is hot. Thanks! 1. [NCWATAUG] Watauga County and the Civil War Program #2
    2. Michael C. Hardy
    3. Annual Civil War Program to Highlight Local Events and People By Michael C. Hardy John Preston Arthur wrote in 1915 "It would take several volumes… to give the history of the troops sent from Watauga County into the Civil War." Part of today's Avery County was then a part of the counties of Watauga and Mitchell. But just how much truth was contained in Arthur's completed writing about the Civil War in our area? George Washington McGuire was one of the local soldiers that Arthur chose to highlight. McGuire served the Confederate cause during the war, rising to the rank of captain in the 11th Battalion North Carolina Home Guard. He was in charge of Camp Mast, located on Cove Creek, when the Federal troops, led by Captain James Champion, from Indiana, led a raiding party that surrounded the camp. Champion sent a demand of surrender to Captain McGuire. McGuire polled his men, and the majority voted to surrender. Arthur finished his account with "McGuire went on… he rode with the [Federal] officers and never returned to this State." But, what is the real story? McGuire did return, fathered several more children, and is buried in the McGuire Cemetery in Avery County. In order to truly understand history, we must look beyond the accounts in history books. While books are important sources of information, many historians, including those much more respected than Arthur, have omitted or incorrectly chronicled pieces of our history in this region, and little-known stories, like the true story of Captain McGuire, are often forgotten. Stories like these, concerning other citizens of Watauga and Avery counties, will be featured and discussed at this weekend's 5th Annual Watauga County and the Civil War program, held at the Watauga County Public Library. Other program topics will include the location of the first Home Guard Camp, the death of Thomas Farthing, the Blalocks, the region's underground railroad, and Stoneman's Raid. Everyone is invited. There will be displays from 9:30 to 3:00 p.m., with an open discussion starting at 1:00. This program is free and is hosted by the Southern Appalachian Historical Interpreters Association. 3. I am hoping that someone can help me in finding information on Nancy (Warrix/Warrick) Johnson b: 1816. She was born in Watauga Co NC and came to Ky with some Greer family members. In Pike Co. Ky she married James Johnson on Dec. 16, 1835. She had children: Elizabeth b:1837, John b:1839, Hannah b:1844, William b:1846, Mary b:1848 and James Kermit born Dec. 27, 1849 in Pike Co. Ky. After James Johnson passed away, Nancy returned to Watauga Co. no doubt to be with family that she missed, and she also traveled back to Watauga Co. with some Greer family. James Johnson, Nancy and children are noted in the 1850 Pike Co. Ky census...so, she returned to NC after that date. Any information would be greatly appreciated. O. Cole
