    1. [NCWATAUG] Reprint update -
    2. Sharon Williamson
    3. Hello Watauga Researchers! Just want to say welcome to several new list members. We now have 361 folks on this list and I am sure there is probably help out there for some of out "brick walls". Please feel free to post your questions. Also want to let it be known that we have about 113 of the 200 pre sale order commitments for the Heritage, vol.1 reprint. That is well over half way and I know that those interested will be glad to see we are doing so well. Hopefully we will soon have enough pre sale commitments that will allow us to proceed with the reprint. For the new comers, there is information about the reprint here: http://www.geocities.com/familysnooper/Heritage.html http://www.geocities.com/familysnooper/Wata_county.html http://www.geocities.com/familysnooper/Wata_links.html Happy Hunting! 3. Hi folks, Just want to let you know that the Reprint project is moving along. If you are wanting a copy of Vol. 1, please go to this page and follow the instructions there. http://www.geocities.com/familysnooper/Heritage.html We have about 350 folks subscribed to this list. PLEASE DO NOT post questions about the reprint back to the WATAUGA List. It puts too much traffic on the list that doesn't need to be there. Thanks, Sharon

    3. Hi, Does anyone know how I can get a copy of the obit (or if there was one) for this Mrs. McGinnis? It would probably be a few days before the date,24 July 1890. I live in PA. and can't get to NC. This is all the info I have. I'm trying to find out if this is Priscilla Walker McGinnis wife to John McGinnis, they married in Wilkes in 1834 and moved to TN for a while then back to NC. Watauga Ancestry, Vol.I No.2 Watauga Democrat, 24 July 1890 Died: Mrs. McGinis (McGinnis)died some days since. Her daughter Mrs. R.P. Matheson of Taylorsville, NC., was with her when she died. While here she received news of the death of her mother-in-law, Mrs. Matheson, who died near the same date. 1. [NCWATAUG] Andrew J. Younce, Watauga Co., NC
    2. Jan Bohler
    3. Does anyone have any information on an Andrew J. Younce who married Emeline Greer. They lived in the Blue Ridge Township of Watauga County, NC in the 1860 census, family # 532, with children James H.- 7, Martha -4 , Milton L.- 2, Nancy E.- 7/12, Andrew was a mechanic. Information from Michael C. Hardy: Was conscripted into Company M of the 58th NCT on Sept 26, 1862 at the age of 31. Deserted at Big Gap Creek, TN, on Feb. 14, 1863. Returned to duty on March 20, 1863. Promoted to Sergerant on May 1, 1863, and transferred to Company G in May 1863. Detailed to work in the government shoe shops in Knoxville prior to July 1, 1863. Reported absent either in Knoxville or Alanta, Georgia, through February 29, 1864. Died of disease on March 3, 1864, in Atlanta, GA. In 1870 Watauga County, NC census , family # 22, David Hendrix and wife Elizabeth and 5 Younce children --- Henderson - 17, Milton - 12, Roby - 9, Samuel - 4, Martha - 13. In 1880 WAtauga Co., NC, Stoney Fork Township,, family # 79 --- David Hendrics - 66, Elizabeth -- 58, and Younces, Milton - 22, Martha - 24, Samuel -- 14. In 1900 Watauga Co., NC, Stoney Fork Township, Family # 76 -- Martha Younce (Feb. 1856) single, mother of 3 children, 2 children living. and James M. (June 1886) age 13. Living right next door is family # 77 -- Watson, A.A. (Dec 1874), Cornelia E. (Jan 1881), America M (Nov 1898), Arthur F. (Mar 1900) THey were all born in NC in each census. The records at the funeral home said that Cornelia's father was George Younce and her mother was Martha Younce. Also the article in the paper about Acquilla and Cornelia Watson's (68th, I think) wedding anniversary, she said that they had married at the home of her uncle, Milton Younce and that as youngsters they had lived about a mile apart. These are the reason that I thought that this Martha was the mother of Cornelia Younce that married Acquilla Arnold Watson. Cornelia was born in 1881 and was married before 1900 so she is not listed in any census with her parents!!! That is not good! Even if this is not the ancestors of Cornelia, I would like to be able to find where they fit into the family. Help!!! Thanks, Jan

    1. [NCWATAUG] Watsons -- NC
    2. Jan Bohler
    3. I really need a little nudge in the right direction on my husband's Watsons. I live in GA and only get up to the Caldwell, Watauga area about twice a year and usually do not have enough time to get much research done. My mother-in-law's maiden name is Nealia Lodenia Watson and her father was Calvin Finley Watson (2 Aug 1889 Wilkes Co, NC - 15 June 1941 Caldwell Co, NC) and the problem with this side of her family is that Fin's mother was named Sophrona Watson (9 Aug 1872 - 12 April 1933), but I do not know if Watson is a married or maiden name. She had 6 children and Fin is the only one that has a father's name (John J. Watson) listed iin the death index. In the 1900 and 1910 census, Sophrona is listed with just the children, even though three of her children were born after 1900. In the Caldwell County, NC death index, Sophrona's parents are listed as Robert Keller and Lottie Bishop. I know that Sophrona had a younger brother named Will Watson and he died 26 Apr 1950, I think in VA. There is a Lottie (or Charlotte) Watson in the 1880 census and in the same household is a Sophrona and Will, and I think that they are all living in the household of Willis Watson, an uncle that did not have children, or so I was told. There was also a Melvina May in the same household, in a later census she is listed with Lottie or Charlotte but is listed as Viney or spelled something close. Then in one of the censuses Melvina has married a Horton and had a couple of children but the husband is not listed. Need help with this puzzle!!!! Also, Nealia Lodenia Watson's mother was a Watson, America Maybelle Watson, daughter of Acquilla Arnold Watson and Cornelia Emmaline Younce. It really gets confusing when the Watsons marry Watsons!!!! The descendants of Saphrona Watson have a reunion the 2nd weekend in Sept and I am trying to work on this as much as I can before then. I have a good bit of information and would be glad to exchange. Looking forward to hearing from someone! Thank you, Jan

    1. [NCWATAUG] Wesley L. Bumgarner
    2. John F. Crossen
    3. This is a Bumgarner from Wilkes County. May or may not be a relative--would like to hear more about him, if anyone has info. He was a CSA prison guard in the Civil War. Born 1844, I believe. The reason I am looking into this fellow is due to a family story: According to my mother's grandfather, Walter Bumgarner of Watauga County, NC, there was a family member who served in the Civil War in a prison camp in NC. He was in charge of burying the dead. Story goes that he became ill and told his comrades he was going to sit under a tree to rest. He was never heard from again. My g-grandfather theorized that maybe someone thought he had died (or maybe he had died???) and another burial detail picked him up and buried him. He might have been buried alive--or so Walter liked to conclude the story. (One thing I'm discovering on both sides of my family--a fascination with the ghoulish, ghost stories, etc.) One record for Wesley at Rootsweb.com states his cause of death as Typhoid Fever. Could it be that the Confederate authorities just never conmtacted the family, and so a story was born? Thank you! 3. Hello Everyone! Yesterday being payday I budgeted a few pesos to go down to the local Barnes & Noble (not an endorsement)and purchase a couple books to orient me to the nuts and bolts issues of doing family research: 1. "Idiot's GUIDE to GENEALOGY." (I have purchased a few of these guides over the years--a fun, informative series.) 2. "MyFamily.com Guide to Your Family Research." (Looked like an easy-going, well-organized introduction to this hobby.) As I am also interested in the more "sensitive" issues of family research, I picked up a copy of John Bradshaw's "Family Secrets." Highly recommended! (I would also recommend M. Scott Peck's "People of the Lie" in helping one to discern "lies" about origins, and how to respond compassionately.) I'd be happy to receive other recommendations re: books or articles on the Web. I'm especially interested in the philosophical dimensions of what we are doing. :) Blessings, John ===== "One more shot for the honour of Down!" -Rollicking Rollo (1766-1814) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
