    1. [NCWATAUG] National Youth Administration
    2. Michael C. Hardy
    3. Greetings folks! I hope this finds everyone well. In doing some research, I came across a reference to the National Youth Administration in Watauga County in 1941 in the Sugar Grove area. I have not consulted with old copies of the Watauga Democrat yet, but I was wondering if anyone on this list had parents or grandparents in this organization, and what they did in Watauga County. I was not familiar with the NYA, so I looked it up and found the following: "...the National Youth Administration (NYA). This program helped those who were between the ages of 16 and 25 who, because they wanted to continue with their education, were given part-time jobs. More than 700,000 students enrolled in this program. The high levels of unemployment meant that part-time jobs were not easy to find and most of the schemes were based in the cities and large towns. 1. [NCWATAUG] Joyner
    2. Rick Tunnell
    3. I am looking for information on my Joyner line from Watauga Co. All I know is this: My great great grandfather was James (Jim) Joyner who had my great grandmother, Sallie or Sally or Sara Joyner who married (early 1880's) Newton Mathieson in Watauga Co. I realize this isn't much to go on but if anyone can point me to any leads, it would be appreciated. Thank you, Rick Tunnell

    3. I connect through the Hartley connection and have read what was written in history books in Nebraska and Kansas then read the messages at Genforum which were very interesting. Also the Watauga History that is online abt the McCanles. My connection is Rebecca Hartley who married Joseph Warren Baird, a sister to James Hartley 1830 in this list ...2 Emily Verderina McCanless 1833 - 1900 .....+James Hartley 1830 - 1869 .......3 Rachel Elizabeth Hartley 1852 - 1941 ..........+Nineva P. Hately 1846 - Makes for a very interesting story. Murder by Wild Bill of "the Hartley Gang" Then James Hartley was murdered by Nineva Hatley when he was trying to defend Rachel against him, and revenge by Rachels family to hunt down and kill Nineva later. Is that all true?? That would have been one wild trip WEST! Sue Ellen

    3. I don't know where you come into the Adams line, but I had a wonderful letter from a lady in Texas and she was looking for an Adams lady who had married a Smith. Her husband is a Smith and she is working on his geneology. One of our relatives in Iowa referred her to me. I had a record of the Smiths from early 1700. There was one Adams that I couldn't find anywhere. When I received her letter, I yelped...HERE IS THE MISSING LINK!!! If you have any Smiths in your line I will be pleased to forward this to you as well, Cuz. Alda Adams Todd

    3. Greetings folks! I am searching for information on Elbert Jousha Hartley, born December 25, 1844, died July 14, 1925, buried at the Cool Springs Cemetery in Watauga County. His parents were Thomas Jefferson Hartley and Clarissa Elizabeth Mithcell. His spouse was Nancy Cook. According to volume 1 of the Heritage of Watauga County book, he served in Company E, 21st Virginia Cavalry. But, a search of the roster of the book by John E. Olson on the 21st Virginia list no Elbert J. Hartley. A search of the National Park Service’s Soldiers and Sailors system also produces no Elbert Hartley in the 21st Virginia. It does list a Elbert Hartly in Company E, 57th Georgia Infantry. Can anyone shed any light on this? 1. [NCWATAUG] The Blalocks
    2. Michael C. Hardy
    3. The Blalocks Well folks, I’ve got a few questions on two of Watauga County’s more famous Civil War soldiers – the Blalocks. I’ve got a copy of Steven’s REBELS IN BLUE: THE STORY OF KEITH AND MALINDA BLALOCK. I know that this book has been ripped to shreds by the history community. Not only did the author make sources up, he misused real sources at his disposal. There was a review in the Appalachian Journal a couple of years ago on the author’s sources. I will give one example. The author writes on page 52: In the summer of 1862, a man who would endure anything to put Keith back in a Confederate uniform or in a Confederate prison took command of the Watauga County Home Guard Company. Setting up his headquarters at Camp Mast, near Boone, twenty-three-year old Major Harvey Bingman knew how “to soldier…” [page 53] Keith came face-to-face with Bingham’s company in late August 1862, when early in the morning, the Home Guard finally caught up with Keith… Well, what’s wrong with the above? The home guard was not created until mid-1863 (fact); Camp Mast was not close to Boone (fact); in August 1862, Harvey Bingham is a lieutenant in the 37th North Carolina, and is wounded in the head at the second battle of Manassas (fact)… So, that being said, I have a couple of questions in regards to his sources. I have yet to contact the National Archives about the list below – I would hate to send them on a wild goose chase. Has anyone ever seen these letters that are suppose to be in Records Group 15 at the National Archives? Jesse Moore to John Benton, October 24, 1878 Keith Blalock to J. H. Greene, July 8, 1876 Keith Blalock to J. H. Greene, November 3, 1874 Affidavit of Thomas O. Pritchard to J. H. Greene, December 15, 1874 Keith Blalock to J. H. Greene, December 15, 1874 Keith Blalock to J. H. Greene, October 27, 1874 Affidavit of Malinda Blalock to N. B. Miller, August 30, 1895. Jesse Moore to John Benton, October 24, 1878 Malinda Blalock to N. B. Miller, August 8, 1895 Keith Blalock to John Benton, October 27, 1878 Affidavit of Adolphus Pritchard to J. H. Greene, December 19, 1874 Affidavit of David Moore to John Benton, October 23, 1878 Letter of Carroll Moore to U.S. War Department, October 24, 1878 Affidavit of Mrs. Mary Coffey to John Benton, October 25, 1878 Affidavit of McCaleb Coffey to John Benton, October 24, 1878 Affidavit of George Perkins to J. H. Greene, December 18, 1874 Affidavit of Joseph M. Webb to John Benton, October 23, 1878 Affidavit of Langston L. 1. [NCWATAUG] 37th NCT / Westward Migration
    2. Michael C. Hardy
    3. Greetings folks! A bit of shameless self promotion. I’ll be speaking and sinning copies of my book on the Thirty-seventh North Carolina Troops on Saturday, November 22, 2003, at the Watauga County Public Library at 11:00 am. I would love to meet many of the folks on this list that helped me with my research, so, if you live in the area, please drop by. If you do not live in the area, but would like a signed copy of the book, please drop me a line. The book is already in its second printing. What does the Thirty-seventh have to do with this list? Company A was from Ashe, Companies B and E from Watauga, Company F was from Wilkes, Company G was from Alexander, and Company K was from Allegheny. Now for my question – I am currently working on a short-history of Watauga County… short meaning around 75,000 words. I am far enough along to have been in contact with a publisher and they are very interested. I am looking for information on western migrations of Watauga County citizens. I read once, in an email, that “in 1863 a party of 45 or so left Boone, N.C. Watauga County, to go to Washington/Oregon Territories. There were several HATLEY family members in the party.” Does anyone have any more information on this, or on other large scale migrations of folks from Watauga County to the west? Regards, Michael C. 3. I have been working on the VANDERPOOL, LEWIS and BAIRD lines that "went West" -- the children and grandchildren of Abraham Vanderpool (1766-1831) and Phoebe ISAACS (ca 1770-1833) -- and might have some material of interest to you. They went to NC to IN, IL, CA, TX , MO and AR in the 1830s-1850s. Would this be of interest? Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG [email protected]

    1. [NCWATAUG] Taylors
    2. Willard C Taylor
    3. My grandfather, Henry Cordell Taylor was a long time resident in the Valle Crusis area and I knew him well. I have recently located my great grandfather Jacob Zachariah Taylor and Elizabeth Emmaline Taylor in a small cemetery on top of a hill overlooking the Valle just off Clark's Creek road. Zack was born 10 Feb 1846 in Watauga Co, and died 10 Oct, 1900 in Avery Co., NC. Eliz. was b. 19 March 1852 and died 9 Feb, 1923. I will really appreciate any info on Zach's father, Jacob Taylor b. 1806-1810....it appears... in Lower Creek, Caldwell Co, NC. His wife was Matilda Humphrey(s) b. abt 1821.. The 1850 census has them living in King's Creek , Caldwell Co. Jacob was 40 and Matilda 29; The 1860 census has them living inWatauga Co with Jacob 53 and Matilda 39. The children's names still match up.. Then, in 1870 the census finds them in Carter Co Tenn with Jacon 60 and Matilda 51. At this juncture the 1880 Watauga Co. NC census shows "mother" Matilda Taylor, age 65 living with Zachariah and Emmaline Taylor and their kids, my grandfather Henry Cordell, among them. Jacob's name is missing and I assume he died...probably in Carter Co Tenn. It's possible he's buried there. Thanks for any help, including Jacob's father, John Taylor. I'm pretty certain that he roamed through the Watauga Co - Caldwell Co area. His wife 's name was Barbara Hoffman. I don't know a lot more about them except that John had something of a reputation as a hunter. One family legend referred to him as "Big" John" ...but we could be talking about two different people. Seems there were a number of "John Taylors"! Many Thanks. Willard (Bill) Taylor [email protected]
