    2. Michael C. Hardy
    3. Greetings folks! Most of you know that I recently wrote a book on the 37th North Carolina Troops and that I am currently writing a “short” (70,000 words) history of Watauga County. I have question for the folks on this list. I am looking for people whose families were displaced by the construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway. How did your family react? Where did they go? What was the overall feeling towards the Federal government? I am always interested in talking about this or other areas of our local history. So please, email me. Regards, Michael C. Hardy (a descendant of the Rev. John Proffitt) _________________________________________________________________ Click, drag and drop. 3. to: Michelle and Audrey: Many thanks for your swift and useful responses. Good info. In the Valle Crusis census for 1860 "Son" is actually Jacob Zachariah Taylor, my Ggrand father. I'm originally from Hickory, NC but have lived in central Florida for 14 years. This makes it a bit rough to hit the local libraries and History centers... But I do try to do some work when visiting there. Thanks , again. Bill Taylor

    2. Thanks to everyone who has helped me with my query about Salvadora Baird and her husband, Phinish Blackburn. I wanted to learn more about their children and who Phinish's parents were. I have found a Phineas Blackburn that I think might be him on the 1860 and 1870 census. The age fits and the name is close. I would love to learn if this is a match. 3. I'm trying to locate info about my family in Watauga Co. My GGgrandfather, Jacob Taylor was born abt 1810 in Lower Creek Twp, Caldwell Co,NC. He married Matilda Humphrey in 1837. Family gossip says he was found dead in a garden beside his hoe in Carter Co. Tenn. I haven't been able to verify this. It might well have been in Watauga Co, NC, since he apparently moved his family there at some point. His son Zachary is my Ggrandfather and I have located his grave site in Valle Crusis beside his wife , Elizabeth Emmaline Clark. The cemetery is located on top of a hill overlooking the valley on private land. Jacob's father, John (my GGGgrandfather), lived with his wife Barbara for a time in Lower Creek TWP Caldwell Co, NC and moved to Watauga Co where he supposedly died in 1838. I have no proof of this nor his birthdate. His wife, Barbara(73), is shown in 1850 census for Caldwell Co living with William Taylor. Good proof gets hard to come by this far back. To further confuse this it appears there was at least one other "John" Taylor in the area and possiby a third. One element in the family declares these Taylors were Scotts and another that they were Germans..the name changed from Schneider to Taylor. I ceratinly would like to know! I will really appreciate any help with these good folk Bill Taylor

    2. Wanda, thank you for the information on the Salvadora Baird and her husband. All the information I have on them, came from the 1880 and 1900 census. I haven't been able to find her on the 1910, 1920 and 1930. She should be there, so I'll keep looking for her. I was given the name Pearl as one of her children. I haven't been able to find Pearl, but did find a daughter named Bettie on the 1900 census. Maybe Pearl was a child, who died in infancy. Here is what I have for Dora: Salvadora BAIRD 1. Salvadora BAIRD "Dora" was born 14 Jan 1856 in Valle Crucis, Watauga Co., North Carolina. She died 27 Jan 1937 in Johnson Co., Tennessee and was buried in Silver Springs Cemetery, Mt. 1. [NCWATAUG] Miller, Land, Sheets, Gulley of Watauga / Wilkes Counties, NC
    2. D E Miller
    3. Martin Sheets The Heritage of Ashe County Vol. 11 (1994) p 268: Martin Sheets (1735 - 1810) came from the Bayern District in Germany. He married with 4 boys and 6 girls. No name for the wife or girls, the boys: John Sr, married Rebecca Pack on 27 March 1804 in Rowan County;, Jacob married Catherine Fouts on 14 January 1786 in Ashe County, Henry (no information) and Andrew married Mary (Mollie) Sherier in 1794 in West Jefferson, Ashe County North Carolina. Martin Sheets died in Rowan County, but his sons spread to neighboring counties. Vacant Land Entries, 1778-1789 - Rowan County, NC. #2492 - Feb., 1780 - Martin Sheets, 300 acres on north side of Yadkin River between mouth of Muddy Creek, adjacent to John Miller. Mary Mollie Shearer was the daughter of Christian Andrew Shearer born 1741 in PA and he the son of Hugh Shearer from Armaugh County, Ulster Province Ireland. Hugh came to PA and moved to Bullock Creek, York District, SC. John and Christian Shearer, brothers, came to Watauga County and John , his wife Gracie, are to become members of the Three Forks Baptist Church. See church records. Also from Bullock Creek, York District, SC was James Enoch Mylar [Miller] born October 22, 1753 in PA. and he married Rachel Wilcoxson, daughter of John Wilcoxson and Sarah Cassandra Boone. At this point I want to speculate that he was the brother of the John Miller living at the mouth of Muddy Creek and the Yadkin River, next to Martin Sheets. Also need to point out that Elizabeth Wilcoxson, sister to Rachel who married James Mylar Miller, married Benjamin Cutbirth Jr. also from the Three Forks Baptist Church. Kinda looks like William Miller of this same church maybe connected?? And Samuel Wilcoxson, who married Anna Jordan is also at the same church. Now Samuel's son Alfred marries a Sarah "Sally" Miller who was from Madison County, KY and the daughter of Jacob Miller and Priscilla Estes. Another son of Samuel Wilcoxson, Elijah married Charlotte Calloway, daughter of Elijah Calloway and Mary Cutbirth.[ d/o Benjamin] Elijah Wilcoxson's son Jesse Boone Wilcoxson married Priscilla Stufflebeam who was the d/o William Stufflebeam and Mary Elizabeth Miller [sister to Sarah Miller who married Alfred. Zachariah Nathaniel Calloway married Susannah Miller b 1755, dt Simon and Ann Robinson Bell; Robert Alexander, Surety. Zachariah was the son of Richard Calloway and Francis Walton. In George W. Ranck's "Boonesborough" it is said that Colonel Richard Callaway, after the French and Indian Wars, evidently moved from Virginia to the Yadkin region of North Carolina but returned to Virginia just before the Revolution. While in the Yadkin region Callaway was a neighbor and friend of Daniel Boone and it was this friendship that led to Colonel Callaways's association with the Transylvania Company and his participation in the founding of Boonesborough. Yet another, Elizabeth Calloway b ca1725 and married to Zachariah Isbell Sr. son Zachariah Jr. married Elizabeth Miller b bet1750-1760. She the d/o John Miller b 1730-1740 and Hannah Isbell. John Miller would be the son of Abraham "The Elder" Miller and his unknown spouse. John Miller's sister Elizabeth married Zachariah Isbell Jr., John's brother George Miller married Judith Wesner. Abraham "The Elder" is the connection to the Friedberg Millers. I can expand on this line and Abraham 'The Younger" Miller who married Sarah Sally Givens at a later time. James Mylar Miller was killed at the battle of Cowpens in 1789 and his widow Rachel marries William Bryan. There two Mylar children James Jr. and Rachel Miller and they married Jett siblings in KY. The Wilcoxson and Bryan connections are also significant to this Miller saga. John Miller, who I speculate was the Miller on Muddy Creek, married Jane Hickerson and they had the following children, Michael, [m Polly Jones] Rebecca, [m David Owens] Thomas, [m Patience West] Anna, [m David Hopper] Virginia Jane, [m Thomas Land] Elizabeth, [m Mosias Jones] Charity, [m Elias Gulley] Susan, William, [m Betsy Gerno] and Samuel, [m Susannah Jones] Of special interest is Virginia's marriage to Thomas Land, son of John Land and Elizabeth Barlow as his sister Elizabeth married Willis Gulley brother of Elias who married Charity Miller It is the sister of John Land, Mary who marries Thomas Carlton that provides the connections to William Miller and Mary Polly Eldridge. Jane Carlton marries Thomas Land [son of Jonathan Land and Elizabeth Isbell. Wilson Land, son of Jane Carlton marries Rebecca Miller, d/o William Jr. and Rebecca Baird. Wilson's sister Narcissa "Nicey" Land marries Henry Harrison Miller Sr. Elizabeth Land married Charles C Miller, [ I don't know him] One last thing, William Miller who married Mary "Polly" Eldridge, she was the d/o Thomas Eldridge Jr. and Martha Bolling. Her brother Thomas Eldridge III had married Winifred Ann Jones Miller. She was born 1743 in Goochland Va. and was the d/o William Miller b 1710, who was the Sheriff of Lancaster County, VA I have not proven any connection to William Miller and Mary Polly Eldridge but I have raised some possibilities. The Calloway and Isbell marriages to Millers have to be considered when talking about Watauga and Wilkes County Millers. I forgot to mention that I am a direct descendent of the Shearer line and that Hugh Shearer was my forth great granddaddy, Merry Xmas all and a Happy New Year D E Miller

    1. [NCWATAUG] Eggers Question
    2. I am at a loss here. I am looking for information my my mothers biological fater. This is what I know: Arlie Estel, actual last name unknown, was born in 1908, Watauga County, North Carolina. This information was found on his Social Security Application. Also on the application he listed his parents as John and Angeline Eggers. Family rumor had it that Eggers was not the surname he was born with. I spoke with his widow recently & she said it was Hollars (but not sure). He took his mothers maiden name due to an extreme hatetrid towards father. I found Angeline Eggers and her ancestry but no reference to a marriage or no marriage. I'm having problems finding his father. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to find a birth certificate but without a surname I'm stumped. Thanks! Terry Pace

    3. Looking for information related to this Shearer family from Bullock Creek, York Dist. SC and found at the church Robert Finley Shearer was their son and he married Sarah Kendall Nov 19,1789 in Wilkes County. Children married into Greene and Hodge familiess. Sarah Kendall was the d/o Wm Kendall and Sarah Foster. I have reason to believe that James Mylar Miller who married Rachael Wilcoxson before she married Wm Bryant may be related to these Shearers. (James Mylar/Miller enlisted during May 1779, while residing on Bullock's Creek in York District, SC and served at various times as a private and mounted gunman under Capts. Jacob Barnett, James Thompson , John McCool, John Moffett and Cols. Watson, Bratton and Wade Hampton. He was in the battles at Stono, Fishing Creek, Blackstock's Plantation and Quarter House. He served to the end of the war. (Moved to Tenn.) http://genforum.genealogy.com/americanrev/messages/6977.html Thank you
