    1. RE: [NCWATAUG] I need some help with ancestors..
    2. Barry Cole
    3. Tim, I could not find either of the names you indicated. You may however want to look for connections with the Moretz family or look in Alamance County, NC records. The Moretz family (which settled the Meat Camp area early) was tightly integrated with the descendants of Theobald Fuches (David Fox). Several of those Fox descendants came with the Moretz families from Pennsylvania via Richlands Church in Alamance to settle in Watauga. 3. Greetings folks! I hope this finds everyone well. Most of you know that I am currently working on a book entitled “A Short History of Old Watauga County.” At 84,000 words, short is probably not a good definition, but I still feel that it is a overview or short history. I am in need of a few more illustrations to round out the text. I need a couple of photographs of men/women who served in the armed forces in WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, and possibly other military actions up until today. I am also looking for a picture of the NASA windmill, early Tweetsie amusement park photographs, and a photograph of Cooker Triplett. If you have any other photographs that you think might be helpful, please email me. I am really limited in the amount of illustrations that I can put in the book (less than 100), but please email me. Scans (at 300dpi) are great, or, if you live locally please contact me. I work at the community college here in Boone and can be reached in Monday through Thursday evenings (3-9pm) at (828) 297-3811. I can scan the photograph or I can re-photograph them. There have been several people on this list that have already contributed and to them I would like to say thanks. Regards, Michael C. 1. 1930 election fraud case - Watauga County
    2. Michael C. Hardy
    3. Greetings folks! I’m still working on that Watauga County manuscript and wanted to pose another question. Does anyone have any information (family stories?) on the 1930 election fraud case that so engulfed Watauga County? I’ve got a selection of newspaper articles from the Watauga Democrat, and I hope to look through the Wilkesboro newspaper on Friday - Wilkesboro was were the trial took place. Please find below a list of names of men who were indicted and tried. The first indictments went out against sixteen men: J. Smith McBride, Chauneey Moody, Roy Wilson, Henry J. Hardin, Lee Mast, Ed S. Williams, J. B. Horton, Allen A. Perry, John E. Brown, Eddie B. Hagaman, Jerd Shull, Claude Edmisten, Henry Mast, Charlie McConnell, Will Rominger, and Walt Ward. The indictments read that the “defendants conspired to injure, oppress, threaten and intimidate Watauga County citizens who were attempting to exercise their civil rights... [and] also that a number of citizens were prevented from exercising their civil rights.” More indictments were issued in the following days. A. D. Wilson, R. L. Clay, W. Roy Johnson, P. C. Wike, A. L. Gross, Luther South, T. L. Mast, Troy Norris, Hooper Hendrix, W. Hardin Brown, Alfred Adams, D. A. Brown, C. S. Stevenson, Clint Norris, B. Cleve Johnson, Henry J. Hardin, Raleigh Cottrell, Howard Cottrell, C. D. McNeill, W. S. Moretz, Harrison Miller, and A. E. South, clerk of the Watauga County Superior Court, were all charged with conspiracy and that the “purported conspiracies were carried out with the display and employment of firearms and other deadly weapons.” It seems that everyone tried was acquitted. Thanks for all the help. Regards, Michael C. However, found no child in 1870 in Wilkes, Wake OR Watauga Co that could have been Lee. I have also seen Watson family trees at the rootsweb worldconnect databases. None of these online files of Ambrose L.P Watson show a son named Lee, bn about June 1868. Any further guidance would be most appreciated. 2. LINDA RICHARDSON
    3. I am looking for my gg grandmother named Mary Jane Davis according to my grandfathers delayed birth certificate. She was born in Watauga in 1866. Not sure what her birthday is. Some in my family say her maiden name is Guy but on my grandfather b-certificate she wrote her maiden name as Mary Jane Davis. From stories I have heard she was kicked off the reservations for being with a white man(not sure). I found her in 1910 in Tazewell Virginia with sons David McNeil and Howard and daughter Nellie. I was told she married a William Martin Davis. I was also told she left behind in Watauga a set of twins perhaps Ellen and Annie not to sure about the names but I believe that is what is told. Please let me know if this rings a bell with you I have searched for so long to find her. Thanks much Linda Richardson LINDA RICHARDSON [email protected] Why Wait? Move to EarthLink.

The family moved from Watauga County to Carter County, Tennessee (1870 US Census). The 1880 US Census shows Matilda living with her son, Zachariah and his wife wife, Elizabeth in Watauga County. I have no more information than this, however, some in the family say she is buried in Watauga County. I will appreciate any info about her. Thanks, Bill Taylor
