    1. Martha Angeline Miller Cole
    2. Sharon and Larry
    3. Hi cousins, I will attempt to clear up a mistake I keep finding on http://www.Rootsweb.com. At the bottom of page 332 of John Preston Arthur's "A History of Watauga County", in the information about the MILLER FAMILY is a clue that should clear up something I keep finding on Rootsweb. I think this will help clear something up for some folks. JPR's book is online here: http://www.geocities.com/familysnooper/Arthur/contents.html You can also go to the NCGenWeb Archives and do name searches in the book. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/watauga.htm "Miller Family.-- According to Clyde C. Miller, of Sands, N.C., there is a tradition that, several years before the Revolutionary War, three young men, a Horton, a Miller and Baird, all married sisters named Eldridge and moved to the upper Yadkin from Pennsylvania. They probably came with the Jersey settlers. Tradition also gives this Miller the name of William and credits him with having fought in the Revolution. His son, David, was one of the first settlers in the bounds of what is now Watauga county, near Meat Camp Creek. David Miller and Levi Murphey or Morphew were constables and called the first court in Watauga to order. David had twelve children, seven sons and five daughters: Wayne, David, John, William, Joseph, Ephriam and Jonathan: Lydia, who married a Bingham, Rebecca, who married Battle Bryan; Polly, who married a Lookabill; Elizabeth, who married an Allison, and Nancy, who married a Lewis. Wayne's sons were: William, James, Daniel, Jonathan and Alfred. David, a brother of Wayne, was the father of Clingman, who has been for years in the State of Washington; George, Mrs. L. D. Cole [Sharon's note - Mrs. L. D. Cole was named Martha Angeline and the "L.D." was for Lorenzo Dow] and Mrs. George Moody were also children of Wayne. Daniel lived and died on Cove Creek." The mistake I keep finding is that Lorenzo Dow Cole's wife was the daughter of David Miller, Jr. and Elizabeth Bingham. They did have a daughter names Martha Angeline, but she is not the one who married Lorenzo Dow Cole. If someone has more light to shed on this, please jump in. Sharon Williamson

    1. old documents and photos
    2. Steve Ward
    3. I have come into posession of some old deeds and land grants from the early 1800s for some of the Ward property in Watauga Co. I am hoping someone can advise me on how to properly store and copy these so as to avoid further damage. Included is a power-of-attorney- from Sabra Harmon Ward to Amos Ward dated 1812. I also have been in contact with someone who remembered Lorenzo Dow (son of Amos) Ward from childhood, and who shared several anecdotes about him. Too, I was able to copy several interesting photos; the only known photo of the wife of Amos (son of Duke) Ward, with her grandchildren, a photo on a copper sheet that may possibly be Amos Ward, a photo of a family gathering at the LD Ward homeplace about 1940, a photo of J. Oscar Ward and Mollie Cook Ward as a young (20s) couple, a photo of Reeves Billings family, ( Billings wife was the daughter of LD Ward) and several photos of Cable Brothers general store in Sugar Grove NC. I also was able to obtain a complete written history of Willow Valley Church. I ran across a name from the early 1800s that was unknown to me; Elijah Kilborne or Kilbourn. Does anyone recognize that name? Steve Ward

    1. Re: [NCWATAUG] Watauga Eggers
    2. Hello Everyone: Can anyone help me with my lineage. I got the names of my GGrandparents..but cant seem to get any further. My GGrandparents were James Grant and Elizabeth W. Grant. This is whats on the Marriage Certificate of my Grandmother Ruth Dorcus Grant. I believe my lineage descended from Daniel Boones family. Do anyone have any information on the children of William Grant and Daniel Boones Sister. I know many of my family members come from the Watauga Area. Ruth Dorcus Grant lived in Halifax County, Virginia. She married John Aaron Ray. John Ray's family came from the western part of NC. Rowan County, Ashe County,Watuaga County, Salisbury, Orange, Yadkin River.... Ruth Dorcus Grant was born in 1874. I found on internet..a James Grant and Elizabeth Grant born around 1794..something like that...but they would not be my Grandparents parents...cause they be too far up in age. Unless James Grant and Elizabeth Grant was her Grandmother and they were taking care of my Grandmother. (Maybe something happen to her parents in this case.) I just dont have enough information. I do know that Grandma..Ruth Dorcus Grant looks like Daniel Boone. Also my mother and aunt look a lot like Daniel Boones picture. This is why I am trying to get information. My heart tells me we are..but I need documentaion. Thanks in advance for any help. Carol Roark Valora Virginia

    1. NEW FORT WATAUGA CHAPTER SAR
    2. Robin Taylor
    3. The Tennessee Society of the Sons of the American Revolution will be forming a new chapter in Carter county which will serve neighboring counties, including Watauga, Ashe and Avery Counties in North Carolina. The new SAR chapter will be called Fort Watauga after the fort at Sycamore Shoals State Park. It is estimated that there were over 1000 patriots at Fort watauga at one time or another especially during The Kings Mountain Campaign. The Overmountain men played a significant role at Kings Mountain. Their backwoods fighting skills helped win the Battle of Kings Mountain for the American Revolution cause. The new SAR chapter will be working with Sycamore Shoals State Park to help recreate and portray historical events in the Watauga region that will honor the Overmountain men for their couragous efforts in the fight for Independence. The new SAR chapter will also be honoring the patriots buried in the region by holding graveside services and placing a SAR marker beside the grave. It is estimated that there are over 200 patriots are buried in Carter county and the surrounding counties. If your Patriot ancestor was at Fort Watauga or fought at Kings Mountain with the Overmountain Men, we would love to have you join the new chapter. The Fort Watauga chapter will be holding an enrollment meeting on November 20, 2004 at 2pm at the Sycamore Shoals State Park. The Sycamore Shoals State Park will also be holding their annual Thanksgiving Feast event also on this date. So come for the food and celebration and honor your patriot ancestor by joining the new Fort Watauga SAR chapter. 1. Buffalo Trail
    2. Brian Fannon
    3. Hello! I apologize if a partial message was sent earlier - the computer blinked while I was typing and I think the message went off into the nether reaches of the digital world... My name is Brian Fannon, and I'm doing research on the Buffalo Trail in Watauga County. I've found a few intersting tidbits, but am searching for any mention of it - old journals, deeds that used it as boundary - anything and everything that might help document it. This is for a thesis at ASU, but I have a strong personal interest in the subject as I am from the Beech Creek area - I would someday like to pull together a documented early history (pre 1800) of this area. Any help would be appreciated, and I'll be happy to share any info that I have (including Ward family history). Thanks, Brian Fannon _________________________________________________________________ On the road to retirement? 1. NEW SAR CHAPTER TO BE FORMED IN WATAUGA AREA
    2. Robin Taylor
    3. A new chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution is being formed in Carter County, Tennessee, which will also be open to those interested from Watauga,Ashe, Avery Counties in North Carolina. FORT WATAUGA New TNSSAR Chapter Study In keeping with new Chapter extensions by TNSSAR, Todd Williams, President of the General Joseph Martin Chapter has found interest in an SAR Chapter in Carter County, Watauga Area, and Johnson County in upper East Tennessee. Todd has kin in Carter County, and I have the same in the Boone area of North Carolina. Some of this kin is already members of the General Martin Chapter. There is no SAR Chapter in Boone, NC, but a very strong DAR Chapter; the Daniel Boone NCDAR Chapter. Todd Williams, as President of the extending Chapter, will serve as Chairman of the Extension Study Committee. Jim Moore, East TNSSAR Vice President has agreed to serve on the Committee. Fort Watauga has played a major roll in the history of the NC/TN Area. The Watauga Agreement was signed before the Declaration of Independence. We feel that there is just too much potential for SAR members in this are not to at least explore the possibility of forming a new Chapter. We will stay with the minimum 25 "new" members as the Lt. Andrew Crockett and Gen. Joseph Martin extensions did. Meetings will be planned in the coming months. Robin Taylor

    1. Cook family cemetery
    2. Carole Cook
    3. I understand that there is a Cook family cemetery in Triplett (or maybe Deep Gap). James P. and Doshie Cook are buried there. James died in 1950 and Doshie died in 1974. Can you tell me exactly where this cemetery is and if there is any information on its history and who all is buried there? I am a descendant of James. I understand the Cook family arrived in NC from Pennsylvania around 1770, or maybe earlier, and that Cook's Gap was founded by them. Any info you have will be greatly appreciated. By father is coming there in October. I hope to make the trip sometime next year. Thank you, Jeff Cook

    1. Flood of 1940
    2. Scotti Cohn
    3. Hello, list members! I am a former resident of Asheville who is now living in Illinois. At the request of The Globe Pequot Press, I am writing a book to be called "Disasters and Heroic Rescues of North Carolina." One of the chapters in this book will be about the flood of August, 1940, particularly its effects in the Deep Gap area of Watauga County. I am using the following sources: - A Disastrous Flood by Ivery C. Greene - The Watauga Democrat newspaper from August 1940 - History of Watauga County by Daniel Jay Whitener - A History of Watauga County by John Preston Arthur - Miscellaneous other sources I would very much like to correspond with anyone who remembers experiences during the flood, but especially members of the Deep Gap families mentioned in Ivery Greene's book. I am wondering, for example, if B.L. Greene, who was 7 years old at the time of the flood, is still living. I am also interested in obtaining pictures to go with this chapter in my book. I am in contact with the usual sources for such pictures (State Archives, UNC Chapel Hill, libraries, etc.), but would be very interested in any photos in your possession that show the effects of this disaster in the Deep Gap community. If you woud like to know more about me, please go to my web site (URL is below). I look forward to hearing from any of you that would be willing to correspond with me. Thank you for your time. 1. RE: [NCWATAUG] I need some help with ancestors..
    2. Michael C. Hardy
    3. Brad: Here is the information that I have on Alexander Fox. Born ca.1847 in Ashe (Watauga) County. He is living in 1860 in the Valle Crucis Township, family group 31. Also in that household are Matilda, age 38 (his mother?) and Columbus, age 4. Alexander was a farmer prior to enlisting in Caldwell County, North Carolina, on July 7, 1862. He was mustered in as a private in Company E, 58th North Carolina Troops. There are no further records from the National Archives. I also checked the 1870 census. In the Watauga township, family group 14, it shows a Matilda Fox (Age 43), with Columbus (age 16) and Martha E. (Age 6). I would be interested in the date of birth, death, and place of burial for Alexander Fox if you even come across it. Regards, Michael C.
