Hello: I am researching my line "Ray's" who I believe come from this area or close to it...Watauga. My GGGrandfather is /was James Ray...I am told he was born around 1760 to 1780... James Ray had 600 acres of land , I believe from Revolutionary War. James Ray moves to Halifax County, Virginia and buys 400 acres of land (Shady Grove)...Black Walnut District. I am told he was married to Elinore Hensley and may have been married to Mary Polly Younger. His son, Sion (Simon) Ray is my line...he married Sarah UNK. His son John Aaron Ray is my Grandfather who married Ruth Dorcus Grant (daughter of James Grant and Elizabeth W. Grant). I was wondering if anyone can help me with James Ray and Elinore Hensley from 1760-1780(guessing years). I can go as far back to James Ray (after he moved to Halifax County, Virginia and he died "falling from a horse" . Sion (Simon) Ray was born in 1815...Halifax County, Virginia. Searching for information on James Ray prior to him moving to Virginia. His father may be William Ray. Any help is appreciated. Around 1960-63 my mother took me to Boone to meet a "Mrs. Holmon" who was a midwife and one-time neighbor who'd helped with my unplanned home delivery. My older brothers and sisters have enjoyed complaining to me about being forced to leave warm beds in the middle of the night to walk in snow drifts above their heads. A rope was tied from our front door out into the yard to help guide them through the mid-December snowstorm. I don't know if this "Mrs. Holmon" is connected to Deborah Holmon's family but I've found so many unusual connections in genealogy research that I wouldn't be too surprised. I also have a Ray connection through my grandmother, Maggie Jenett Ray. I treasure a circa 1911 family photograph showing many of Alec Clyde and Aylie Watson Ray's children; my two-year-old mother is sitting in the lap of her grandfather, Alec, and a six-month old aunt is sitting in my grandmother Maggie's lap. All/most of the women are wearing clothes made from one bolt of cloth while the men have shirts made from another. I digitally restored/enlarged the photograph to fit into an antique frame so could e-mail a copy if requested. Most branches of my family settled in NC (NC was considered part of Virginia in 1600s) but I've lived almost 25 years in Rhode Island. Within walking distance from my workplace, I recently learned the 1688 marriage contract of my GGGGGGGGreatgrandmother, Marie Arnaud Parlier is likely archived in the Old Washington County Jail, home of Pettaquamscutt Historical Society. They're only open two afternoons a week so I hope to go tomorrow to search for it. The Pettaquamscutt Historical Society collects and preserves materials relating to a ten square mile portion of Washington County known as "the Narragansett Country," lands acquired from native Americans by purchase in 1657 and encompassing all or parts of the towns of South Kingstown, North Kingstown, Narragansett and Charlestown. The collections include approximately 200 linear feet of manuscripts, consisting of family materials, genealogical files, church, business, and organizational records, and some South Kingstown town records. The Society serves as a depository for the Wakefield Baptist Church (1781-1995) and the Kingston Hill Gardeners. Artie: If your Rays go back to Col. Jesse, then we are cousins. My Grandfather was (Irwin) Layne Ray. I've traced my paternal Ray line back to William & Elizabeth Ray. I would love to see the picture you have. My father, Roy Layne Ray, is ill at the moment and a picture of old relatives would surely cheer him up. I'd be willing to pay for a print of whatever you have. I am looking for a relative of Theodore Church who burned to death December 20, 1912 when he stood too close to the flames of a fireplace and his clothing caught fire in the Aho community of Watauga Co. My great-great grandfather, Ed Miller, wrote the poem about Theodore's death. I am researching the Miller-Holman family and would love to hear from anyone with information. Thank you! Thank you for the replies. I realize now that I didn't provide much information. So, I'll try to do that now. I have a copy of a letter written to Mr. N. B. Creed, Watauga Falls, NC, on December 18, 1902. The letter was from Frank A. Baiton, Captain 3d Cavalry, Commanding Troop F, Fort Yates, ND. The purpose of the letter to N. B. Creed was to inform him of the death of his son James Creed. James Creed was born in Carter Co TN about June 1876. His father, Napoleon Boneparde "N. B." Creed, was born in 1853 in Carter Co TN. I believe the father of N. B. was William C. Creed who was born in NC. I have no idea where in NC he was born. If anyone can shed any light on this family, please let me have your comments. Thank you so much. Nyla CREED ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

I have thought for years we ought to be celebrating Daniel Boone in the town of Boone and have talked to the DAR, Horn in the West, the Mayor and others about this and I believe it will happen, but maybe not until next year. All are interested in this. It would be interesting to see the names connected to him. I found the following online and thought some male Hartley might like to join this DNA group --- just might help us on the determining the parentage of Rebuen Hartley. Project Coordinator: _Carl Hartley_ (mailto:i2674) (mailto:i2674) Promotion Code: 00WEC Surnames Included: Hartley Web Site: () Objective: This is a newly formed group. Our initial surname of interest is Hartley. We are looking for additional participants and to establish a formal group administrator. Individuals interested in collaborating on family history and using genetic testing to assist our research efforts are encouraged to join. Requirements: If you are a male with one of the above surnames and are interested in researching your direct paternal line further, you can participate. This group study is using the DNA test that looks at a portion of the DNA called the Y chromosome. The Y chromosome is unique to males and can be used to identify one`s direct paternal line. For this reason, females cannot contribute directly, but can find a male relative (father, brother, cousin, etc) to be tested as a representative of her line. Females can also participate by acting as a Group Coordinator or in other administrative capacities. Join Project To join this project, you must have a login account. 1.
