Ritchey <ritcheym@acceleratedgenealogy.com> >To: FHCNET-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: FHLC on CD for public sale Hello gang, Decision makers in the Family History Department have been lately discussing the merits and pitfalls of marketing the next FHLC (Windows CD version, w/author, title, keyword searching, etc.) to the public. If you've ever wanted a copy of the FHLC for your own computer, and can't afford to sit waiting while the online version loads each view, or want to use the CD in places where you can't connect your modem to a phone line (like in libraries), you'd better start making some noise now or forever hold your peace. Some of the FHD's administrators don't see the need to market the CD version. They think there's no demand, no need for a CD version for private use, now that the online version is up. Luckily, there are some at the FHD who would like to see the thing marketed. Those of you who were involved with the testing/hair-pulling with PAF 3 know, however, that sincere, knowledgeable, low-level church employees' recommendations are not always heeded by the administrators. They need your individual voices to back them up. If you want to help propel the CD-ROM based FHLC toward public release, <write>. Don't just tell them you want it; tell them <why>. Detail for them your personal situation -- why the CD version would help you more than the online or FHC-limited version. Or, if you don't want it, don't say anything, and you'll get your wish. Good Morning Everyone: I am back after our trip to Creswell for the kick off the 200th anniversary of Washington Co celebration. It was wonderful. I spent Friday in the Courthouse at Plymouth - and let me tell you those are really and truly one great bunch of helpful, kind and nice people at that courthouse which is not the norm. I collected a lot of information on the Ambrose and Davenport line which I will get up on my homepage before long. One thing that might interest you all is that the courthouse has a computer printout in alpha order of all the births and deaths for the county since 1913 and they have copies of all of the birth and death certificates right there that can be copied. Talk about making it easy to research a name! And another thing. The Genealogy Helper and Red Book both talk about the courthouse burning 3 times. This is true, but what they don't say (or at least I don't remember them saying) is that the deed records were saved each time. This means that all of the deed records from 1799 until present are intact. Marriages are only on file from 1850 on which was a bummer but at least the records after that are there. There are no actual licenses - just a marriage register with names, dates and who married the couple. There was one period of time where the court clerk listed the parent's names and some additional information which is great if your ancestors got married within that time frame. The Davenport House was ready to be viewed and all of the "crafts" of the old days were really well done. I passed on sampling the "bear stew" but there were a lot of takers and those who tried it pronounced it "very good". I'm certainly glad they enjoyed it! <g> It was really fun to meet the people I talk to over the internet and to be able to put a face with a name. I purchased the two Washington Co History books that are available and thought I'd pass along some information to those of you who might not know they are available. The first one is small and is designed with the young person in mind. It contains a lot of information without being overwhelming and doesn't contain family histories. Excellent book! The 2nd one is HUGE! I has 700 pages and over 250 photos. The history of the area and Washington Co is extremely well done. The family histories are nice although there are not a lot of them. I would suggest that if you are doing research in Washington Co you give serious consideration to purchasing one or the other of these books. The small one is $20.00 plus $5.00 shipping and handling The big one is $50.00 plus $5.00 shipping and handling They can be ordered from: Washington County Bicentennial Publications P.O. Box 1007 Plymouth, NC 27962 I will post the names of the family genealogies that are in the book tomorrow morning - I have to get ready for work right now. Dear Researchers of the Washington County, North Carolina Mailing List, Have you found any migration from New England to Washington County, North Carolina, in the early 1800's? If so, what seems to have been the primary motivation for the move? I am researching the Lott PRATT and John PRATT who appeared in the 1810 Federal Census of Washington County, North Carolina, who may have been a match with or related to a Lot PRATT who was enumerated in the 1800 Census of Peacham, Caledonia County, Vermont. Thank you for your suggestions or information! Randal W. Cooper <rwcooper@kellnet.com> Lorain, Ohio
Dear Researchers of the Washington County, North Carolina Mailing List, I have joined the Washington County, North Carolina Mailing List because of the Lot[t] PRATT who was enumerated in the Federal Censuses of 1800, 1810 and 1830 of Washington County. The Lot PRATT I am researching was enumerated in the 1800 Census of Peacham, Caledonia County, Vermont, and was born in Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, in 1766. "My" Lot PRATT maried Mary ALDRICH in 1798 in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. This Lot PRATT arrived in Greenup County, Kentucky by 1820, because he was listed in the 1820 Census of Greenup County, Kentucky. His son John PRATT married Eliza BELLOW in 1822 in Greenup County, Kentucky. In attempting to fill out the story of Lot PRATT's life, I encountered the Lott PRATT who lived in Washington County, North Carolina, through a nationwide census index. Naturally my curiosity led me to examine further, to see whether these two [or more] Lot PRATTs were in fact the same person, or at least to identify the North Carolina Lot PRATT. The great distances involved, from Vermont to North Carolina to the Ohio River Valley in Greenup County, Kentucky made me suspicious as to whether I was looking at a match in the two Lot PRATTs. If you have any information or suggestions, please contact me, either privately or on the List. Thank you! As a new List Member, I look forward to meeting researchers of Washington County, North Carolina. Thanks again. Randal W. Cooper <rwcooper@kellnet.com> Lorain, Ohio

Since we have several new subscribers I'm re-sending this message. Is everyone aware that the 200th anniversary of Washington Co NC is this year? The Historical Society is planning several different things for the month of June. The celebration kicks off on Sat Jun 5th at the first house built in Washington CO NC - the Davenport house. You can read all about it on the Washington Co page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncwashin/washing.htm My husband and I visited the house a few months ago when we home for a visit to Creswell and it's a wonderful restoration. It really let's you see how our families lived "back then". The Collins House will be open that week-end so don't miss taking the tour and see how the true Southern Plantation owners really lived. The folks who manage the house are great. And talk about a contrast!! The difference of the small farmer (The Davenports) and the plantation owner (The Collins). Anyway if there is anyway possible you can make it to Creswell on June 5th we'd love to have you!! Linda: I do subscribe to the Davenport list but most of the information is on the Pamunkey Davenports from VA. It's still an interesting list. Dr. John Scott Davenport has written some information on the origin of the Davenport surname you can read at http://users.intercomm.com/nvjack/davnport/origin.htm Steve Davenport surnames: AMBROSE, BRESTER, DAVENPORT, DOANE, HASSELL, MAYO, MORSE, O'NEAL, SPENCER, TATEM, WHITE, WOODLEY
