Couldn't find an Atwater in "Sketches," and there are no Atwaters listed in the Vance Co. Heritage book. Nor do I see any Pendergrass listed in the Vance Co Heritage Book. But, of course, bear in mind, it's the VANCE Co Heritage Book, and only *part* of Granville became Vance. Just because the name isn't in the Vance Heritage Book certainly doesn't mean there weren't any of those families around. ;-) There are, of course, Pendergrasses in Orange County....even to present day. Not sure if Lindy Pendergrass is still sheriff, but he was as recently as 10 years ago (altho I don't recall if his family is "native" to Orange). Also checked "Sam's Black Baby," and don't find any reference to Atwater or Pendergrass in there. Sorry I'm not of much help here, but perhaps someone else can add information for you. -Sandy
