This is addressed primarily to Lew Jenkins whose ahnentafel was posted and forwarded to me. Hi, Lew-- You and I have an interest in common concerning the JENKINS line, included in your posting of your CHRISTMAS family. As there are several points at which we differ I'll offer my version and invite your comments. Let me report at the outset that much of my information comes from the book THE JENKINS FAMILY OF VIRGINIA AND NORTH CAROLINA by Nettie Jenkins Bowen. In nearly all cases it had been discovered previously by my own research and the "legends" of my JENKINS relatives. That does not mean it is correct--I am just identifying my sources. Starting with #17 on your ahnentafel, Elizabeth Ford Jenkins, marriage 23 May 1790 to William Christmas, I note that you identify Elizabeth as a daughter of Jesse Jinkins and Martha House. The Bowen book shows that Jesse Jenkins married Martha _____?, but it lists no daughter named Elizabeth, although it includes a daughter-in-law Elizabeth Christmas. Evidently a son of Jesse and Martha JENKINS married Elizabeth Christmas. It does show that Betsy JENKINS, daughter of William JENKINS and Elizabeth FORD, married William CHRISTMAS of Warren County, NC, citing "Halifax County deeds from Robert Chappell James Story; William Jenkins to his sons 1807." This William JENKINS was an elder brother of the Jesse JENKINS to whom you referred. The Bowen book also reported that another brother, Thomas, married Tabitha HOUSE, daughter of William. Whether Elizabeth's father was Jesse or Elizabeth, her grandparents would be Mansfield and Patience JENKINS, according to my findings. I have not encountered the name Mansford previously in this connection. There were many descendants named Mansfield, and that name appears in the records of Richmond Co and Old Rappahannock Co, Virginia, as well. In the Bowen book, "Mansfield Jenkins of Richmond County, Virginia, second son of William, b ca 1708 d 1755; m Patience____? ca 1732.." Although I have found no documentation of the maiden name of Patience, others have tended to agree that it was HOOD. Their children were listed as: John, Mansfield, James, William, Thomas, Jeremiah, Elizabeth, Jesse and Molly To proceed to your eighth generation I have William JENKINS, born c1675, died 1720; married Elizabeth SKELDERMAN c1698. Their children were listed as: John, Mansfield, James, Harman, Martha Elizabeth, Sarah and Mary. The ninth generation would include parents of Elizabeth, Harman SKELDERMAN and his wife, Martha. I found an act of naturalization by the Virginia Assembly for Harman KELDERMAN, a Hollander. I have found no record of William JENKINS' parents, but there was a power of attorney recorded earlier in Old Rappahannock County from Will JENKINS, merchant of the city of Bristol, which might be a clue. According to information collected by my maternal aunts, probably from oral testimony of their JENKINS ancestors, Billy JENKINS was the earliest of this line. He would seem to correlate with William, who married Elizabeth FORD. He had issue, in addition to William Ford Jenkins and Elizabeth JENKINS, sons Jesse (my ancestor) and Cannon, who were not mentioned in the Jenkins book. They married sisters Martha (Patsy) and Sarah BRADLEY. Your comments and sources would be appreciated. Tom ([email protected])
