I thought the books at the county courthouses were indexes and/or copies of the birth and death certificates which, as you say, were mandated beginning 1913 - although I have heard it is possible to find some counties having kept the occasional earlier record (I pass that along as mere hearsay, since I have not personally run across earlier ones). Are there other vital statistics books kept by the counties that I've missed? Please, please tell us more! Thanks, Sandy

    3. You know you are probably right that they are mostly covering records for deaths after 1913, but what I meant was some of these old courthouses might have records or deeds that might mention someone's death. The fact that there is a will in this case is more than a lot of the individuals leave and is a good record, for instance. But you never know what else you may run across in the back of some old file.
