M I D D A Y U P D A T E Nov. 8, 2002 Jury deliberating in Bowie murder case John Ingle Times Record News FORT WORTH -- A Tarrant County jury began deliberations Friday morning to determine if Charles William Jordan is guilty of capital murder or a lesser offense. Montague County Assistant District Attorney Jack McGaughey said he and Jordan's attorney made closing arguments before the jury began determining Jordan's guilt. Jordan is accused of the Nov. 23 slayings of James and Ullaine Christmas. Mr. Christmas was shot to death with a sawed off shotgun and Mrs. Christmas was beaten to death. Their bodies were found in a shallow grave behind Mr. Christmas's home. "The defense claim is that it was an accident. We pointed out that there was no blood" in the area where the scuffle allegedly took place, McGaughey said. The testimony of grandson Willie Christmas throughout the week was riddled with conflicting accounts of the deadly day, which, McGaughey said, shouldn't harm the state's case. If the jury doesn't reach a verdict today, the assistant district attorney said 97th District Judge Roger Towery would sequester the eight-woman, four-man jury for the weekend. McGaughey said they would continue deliberations over the weekend until a verdict is reached. The punishment phase could begin Monday.
