2. Re: Roll Call I am John Clark, researching the Martha Hoyle Clark/George Clark lines. Martha goes back thru William Hoyle of Nottinghamshire, Eng. George came from under the proverbial "cabbage leaf." I have no positive data as to who his parents were. They lived in the Sandy Creek District. Am also trying to determine if another of my lines, Susanna Richardson, connects with the Richardsons of the Haliwa-Saponi Indians of Halifax and Warren Counties. John Clark

1. Re: [NCWARREN-L] Roll Call - Durham/Fortune
2. I am researching the Durham and Fortune families in Warren County and elsewhere. The 1790 census shows Charles Durham as living in Chatham County, NC, aged between 20-30, together with one female in the same age bracket, name unknown, but presumably his wife. No other Durhams are listed in the 1790 Chatham County Census. A check of the marriage lists of Warren County, NC, reveals a marriage between Charles Durham and Mary Fortune in Warren County on 10 March 1794. The assumption is that Charles' first wife died between 1790 and 1794. Warren County is about 80 NE of Chatham County. No other entry of a person named Fortune has been located in the Warren County records. After the marriage they returned to Chatham County. Charles Durham and wife, Mary, moved from Chatham County, NC, to Pendleton District, SC, apparently between 1796 and 1800, as verified by the National Census for 1800, which showed Charles and his wife as being between 26-45 years of age, with two sons under ten and four daughters under ten. It is believed that one or two of those children were from Charles' first marriage. What relationship, if any, was there between Charles and the Durhams (Edward, James, John, Samuel, Susanna, William, William, Jr. and others) living in Warren County ca 1780-1800? Who was Mary Fortune? Can anyone suggest why Charles, a widower with one or two small children, would travel 80 miles to Warren County to marry Mary Fortune, a woman who has no known relatives in Warren County?

1. [NCWARREN-L] Re: Tabitha Beckham and Zacariah Renn
2. In a message dated 1/17/2003 8:36:32 AM Eastern Standard Time, GeneLridge writes: > Well, I still say we're related, because I have a Tabitha Beckham and two > Zacariah Wrenn/Renn, from the Granville, Bute, Franklin, Warren area. Okay - I have my notes with me now. Here's what I have... Tabitha Beckham marries a Harmon Renn. They marry on 4/3/1806. This is on record with the Warren County Marriage Bonds. This is something that I myself have record of... Harmon's name is spelled Ren in the Warren County Records. Harmon is the son of Joseph and Nancy. For Zachariah Renn (Spelled Wrenn) I have a marriage to Elizabeth Pardue. This marriage took place on 12/28/1813. This is also from the Warren County Marriage Bonds. Zachariah is the son of Joseph and Nancy. I have Zachary Beckham marrying Martha Knight on the 13th of March 1804 - from the Warren County Marriage Bonds. I have a Martha Smith married to Archibald Brown Jr. on 12/15/1830 Green Renn (spelled Wren) is married to a Jane Worrell - Married on Jan 8, 1821. I have Green C. Renn (spelled Wren) married to Winnie Robertson on May 29,1832. Green Renn is the son of Joseph and Nancy, and it's believed that Green C. is the son of Zachariah and Elizabeth Pardue. Joseph Renn (spelled here Wren) is married to Nancey Maddry on 2/2/1782 - and he is at the top of my chart so far... Sally Wren marries John Beckham on 12/4/1818 and she's the daughter of Joseph. another Joseph Renn (also spelled Wren) is married to Clarasa Breedlove 1/16/1810. I believe that this Joseph who married Clarasa was possibly a Jr. I don't have anything to back that up with - but another woman working on my family genealogy says that Joseph Renn who was married to Nancy Maddry left Nancy as a widow when he died. Mentioned in Joseph Wren's will is son Green Wren, daughter Mary, daughter Susannah, wife - assumably Nancy, daughter Polly, son Zachariah, Zachariah's daughter Martha, Zachariahs daughter Ann, it would seem to mention Ann's daughter Elizabeth, Tabitha Ren, Harday Fortner, Mandy Renn, with Green Wren being the executor. Joseph's will mentions his wife several times, but he doesn't call her by name. However, again, someone else researching the family says that Nancy was Joseph's widow. The will was witnessed by Thomas M. Renn (son of Harmon and Tabitha). It was also witnessed by William Pardue (who I think is related to Elizabeth). Also some other names I haven't linked yet (at least I don't think I have) are - Joel Wren m. Cheney Mangrum 7/9/1803 Jas. Brown m. Elizabeth Renn 3/20/1801 Nancy Beckham m. John H. Brown 1/23/1849 Zearell Crowder m. Surphrone Renn 12/29/1857 Hardy Fortner m. Nancy Wren 12/1/1825 Henry Renn m. Elizabeth Robertson 10/3/1837 J. J. Renn m. Susan W. Twisdale 12/21/1865 James Renn m. Elizabeth Vaughan on 5/6/1840 James R. Renn m. Henrietta Alley on 12/19/1848 William G.E.Renn m. Delilah Bowden 2/16/1849 I had no findings for a Eunice Rachel Strong... But I don't have a copy of ALL the records of marriage bonds. I only made copies of those that were of interest to me... All of the records I have are from Warren/Bute counties... I don't have any records that I myself have gotten from Granville or Franklin counties, but I do know that these would probably tie in since the branch from Warren County moved to Granville County at some point... That's what I have, Hope it helps. Linda

1. [NCWARREN-L] Roll Call - GLOVER
2. Mignon Nicholson
3. I'm looking for information on the parents of Darnell/Darnall Glover and Elizabeth Cannon who married 30 October 1798 in Warren Co., NC. There's some evidence that Henry Glover was the father of Darnell/Darnall Glover and that Sarah was his mother (perhaps Sarah Darnall). Does anyone know more? In BUTE CO., NC, MINUTES OF THE COURT OF PLEAS AND QUARTER SESSIONS, 1767-1779, p. 244 a deed dated 14 May 1777 is cited from Geo. Walker and Eleanor his wife to Henry Glover. On page 302 a deed from Henry Glover and Sarah his wife to Samuel Walker is cited. A Thomas Glover is mentioned in Bute Co., NC in 1778 in Will Book 3, p. 76, NC Records Vol. III. If anyone has access to this book, would it be possible for me to get a copy of this will? Best regards, Mignon

1. [NCWARREN-L] Roll Call--JENKINS, BECKHAM, HILLIARD, BOWDON, EARL, SIMS, etc.
2. I have many families in Warren Co but I am missing information, particularly about wives: Zachariah BECKHAM married Martha Knight in 1804. She was a widow, and I cannot discover her family name. They were married in Oxford, but they lived in Warren Co. John EARL and Zebiah SIMS were married 1780 in Warren Co. She was a daughter of Edward SIMS, whose wife (so I have been told) was Elizabeth DUKE. I cannot find any confirmation or identification of her family. Edward SIMS was a son of another Edward SIMS who reportedly married Mary BRUSTER. Again, I can find no further information about her. William JENKINS married Elizabeth FORD before 1760. I cannot find her family. Stephen BECKHAM Jr married (1) Rachel, who died before 1787. Does anyone know her surname and family? Stephen BECKHAM Sr died 1773 in Bute Co. I would like to identify his wife. John BOWDON's wife was named Judith. Many people say she was a Farrar, but I have serious doubt. If anyone can identify Judith's family I will be eternally grateful--but please, don't tell me she was a daughter of William Farrar without documentary evidence that I can verify. A distant cousin, J Walter Allen, seems to have invented this connection and published it widely in reputable publications, such as the William and Mary Quarterly; but he never cited a source in support of this allegation. Judith Farrar, daughter of William, married Jesse Hays (Granville Co marriage bond) when Judith and John BOWDON were already (and still) married. I'll be happy to share information I have on these families. Tom Aiken Virginia Beach

1. [NCWARREN-L] Roll Call - Felts
2. I'm Jana. I'm looking for the father of Joseph Felts, born June 27, 1788 in NC, married Hester Crane (1st) and moved to Robertson County, Tennessee around 1810. They had at least 7 children: Wyatt, Warrick, Elizabeth Nancy, Mary Ann, Joseph Whitmell (my ggggrandfather) and William. I think he was the grandson of Nathaniel Felts who died in Warren County in 1798 but I cannot pin down his father. I speculate it's either Rowland (who died in Robertson County, TN after 1832) or Randolph (who died in Warren County in 1799.) Any clarification or other help connecting the Warren County family to my Robertson County ones would be appreciated. Sue, you do a wonderful job with this list and I really enjoy the history lessons and other general geneaolgy information I receive from everyone that participates. I have also used your books that are available in the Dallas Public Library in an attempt to locate the allusive Joseph and found that a lot of the records are about "Fitts" instead of "Felts". So my search may be within the Fitts family records in Warren County instead of the Felts family. Keep up the good work! Jana

1. [NCWARREN-L] Frances SELF Snow
2. William Snow, I would like to get with you on any information you may have on Frances SELF Snow who married Spencer Snow. I'm quite interested in building a webpage dedicated only to the many apparently not yet connected SELF's who lived in Warren County, North Carolina, and connections to any families. I'd be listing all known FACTS, and we can let individuals compile from this data their own lineages. Collecting all these little tidbits of information and compiling in one coordinated location, may give one of us the lucky break so long sought. There were Selfs and Freemans who went to central Tennessee, and Self, Jones, and Feagitt who went to western Kentucky from this area. If you have any South Carolina ancestors and / or wish to pursue your SELF family connections, the 6th Annual National Gathering of Self family researchers is being held in Shelby, NC. on the 25th-27th of April, 2003. Brent H. Holcomb, SC author and genealogist will be one of the speakers. See: http://www.self-family.com/self2003 for more details or I can send you a brochure. Dan McCarthy

2. In a message dated 1/16/2003 8:28:59 PM Eastern Standard Time, NotHopeles@aol.com writes: >I'm researching the RENN family from Warren County. Most moved to Granville >County in the 1800s at some point. A branch of Renns must have stayed in >Warren County however, since there is a RENN family still there. Other >surnames are Beckham, Maddry, Pardue, Robinson or Robertson, Worrell... > >Linda Hello Linda, I am attempting to research my group of Renns who appeared on the scene in just prior to the 1800's. I have placed them all under the spelling of Wrenn, as this seemed to have become the favored spelling in later years. They lived near several families with whom they intermarried and shared the witnessing of documents; and I am wondering if they had also had lived near each other prior to settling into Person County. These families were Carver, Hamlin, Walter, and a few others you will see in the outline below. There are a few given names which have somewhat a distinctive quality, such as Granderson, LeGrand, Sidney, and Roan. I will very much appreciate your checking through my data and see if there seems to be reason to consider connections among the Warren/Person Renns. Best regards, John Fox Winston Salem, NC 1. ? WRENN Children: Benjamin James William Rebecca 1.1 Benjamin WRENN Notes: Benjamin was listed in the tax list of 1794 for St. Lukes District, as possessing no acreage, and being at least 21 years of age. In the Person County Record Books, Bk. 2, page 195, Benjamin Ren is listed as jurat for the will of William Gately, 28 May 1794. It is possible that Benjamin was father to James, William, and Rebecca; but for now(2001) I am placing him as a brother to the group 1.2 James WRENN Birth Date: Circa 1785 Birth Place: Virginia Notes: It is not proven by document that James was the father of the five sons listed below. James Wrenn may have been married before he married Mary Hamblin in 1806, but it is evident that Mary could have been the mother of the children named below. John Wrenn married Frances Carver, Sidney did not have any sons; but William Warren Wrenn did name his first son James L. Wrenn, apparently for his father. John Fuller, who also witnessed the wedding of William Wrenn and Nancy Mann, witnessed the wedding of James and Mary. Spouse: Mary HAMLIN Birth Date: Circa 1778 Birth Place: Virginia Spouse Father: William HAMLIN Spouse Mother: Nancy -?- Marriage Date: 14 March 1806 Marriage Place: Person County, North Carolina Children: John Sidney Thomas Granderson William Warren Joseph Thomas 1.2.1 John WRENN Birth Date: About 1806 Birth Place: North Carolina Death Date: 1869 Notes: John and Frances Carver's marriage bond was secured by Nathaniel Hamblen, who was also the bondsman for the marriage of Sidney Wrenn and Catherine Dicey Gregory. This family was living in Granville County, North Carolina at the time of the 1850 Census. Spouse: Frances CARVER Birth Date: Circa 180615 Spouse Father: Landrum CARVER (1781-1842) Spouse Mother: Nancy BARROTT Marriage Date: 7 January 1825 Children: Mary Ann Sidney Thomas Sarah J. James L. Item 40 of the Person County Land Grants listed Sidney Wrenn as receiving 6 8/10 acres of land on Rosemary Creek adjacent to John W. Williams, Matthew Mitchell, Charles Gregory; chain carriers were John Gregory and Burgess Fulcher. Sidney acted as security for the marriage of his brother-in-law,John Gregory and his bride, Parthena Jacobs, 25 December 1828. The estate records and Census of 1840 indicate that Sidney died between the ages of 20-30. Spouse: Catherine "Dicey" T. GREGORY Birth Date: About 1810 Death Date: About 1865 Death Place: Person County, North Carolina Spouse Father: Charles GREGORY (1766-1843) Spouse Mother: Mary? UNKNOWN After the death of Sidney in 1840, Dicey apparently returned to live in her father, Charles Gregory's household. Her father had remarried 2 May 1818 to Mary Jacobs. By 1843, Charles was dead and his widow was listed as head of household. She had Catherine Wrenn and her daughter, Roan; and Susan Jacobs and her son Jesse, residing in her household as the Census of 1850 indicated. It seems that Charles marriage to Mary Jacobs was not his first because Catherine had been born before Mary's marriage to Charles Gregory. Mary was a daughter of Benjamin Jacobs of Caswell County, NC. The marriage bond for Thomas H. Hudgins and Catherine T.
