Jack, I just heard from a friend who lives in Warren Co., NC that the WISE P. O is still in operation in 2003. The NC Gazetteer bu Wm D. Powell said it was discontinued in 1951, but I can assure you that my sources would know. Sorry I reported it to you incorrectly. -------------------------- > > I understand that Wise is in Warren Cty and I am trying to find it if it > was a city at the time of the 1900-1920 census. Wise is a community in Warren Co. and was that in the early1900s. It was still a community in the 1960/70 and 80s. I am sure the area still exist even today. It was never a city, but a small community or maybe one could call it town, but I do not think so. It was settled in 1890. A post office was established there in 1891 and discontinued iin 1951. Hope this helps some. --------------------------------- > I understand that Wise is in Warren Cty and I am trying to find it if it was > a city at the time of the 1900-1920 census. I understand that Wise is in Warren Cty and I am trying to find it if it was a city at the time of the 1900-1920 census. It is not listed independently as such. Jack
Is there a particular person you are looking for in 1900? If you have the names and possible locations your are looking for, perhaps I can look them up for you. I've noticed this, too, on some recent visits to the website. However, I found that if I enter these same links through the NEW heading, those links work. Nola, can you give us an answer about this? Deloris, I can give you an answer - afraid it is just another of my geriatric moments ;) If it were not for people catching my mistakes, things would be a lot worse. I keep trying to work at the pace I did when I was mentally and physically fit and really should be more careful. Not sure I will get it fixed today but I will check it out. The good news is that I have more Ms. Kerr's Bute/Warren records to post and hopefully I will get the links fixed correctly. Thanks for letting me know. Nola
Why would I be getting this response when I click on any of Mary Kerr's abstracts links from http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncwarren/ "Forbidden You don't have permission to access /wills/will-abs/wc-wb14-1.html on this server." Also when I go to the 1880 census page and try to link to a page or a twnship, I get the response: "Not Found The requested URL /~ncwarren/census/1880/153.htm was not found on this server." Have links been broken? Pat Pat
I am interested in the Neal reference. My great grandparents were Martha Poythress who married an Edward Neal (age 32) in Emporia, Greensville Co, VA in March 1880. The marriage certificate lists Edward's parents as living in NC, William Neal as the father of Edward . Edward's mother's name is difficult to decipher-it looks like Sheney. Martha and Edward's daughter listed her name as O'Neill on her marriage certificate in Halifax Co, NC. Because my other lines both paternal and maternal seemed to be in lower Virginia and upper NC--Warren, Vance, Franklin, Halifax, I would be interested as to what Mrs. Kerr's deed book mentions as to property owned by Jeremiah and particularly William Neal and whether anyone on this list has a line on these two Neals. >Mrs. Kerr's deed book.... Only two NEALS are listed in the index---Jeremiah and William, jr. You may be right about this being a different one. In looking at these records, the last transaction showing a DAVID GILL, was in 1783 in Halifax, again as a witness. There was nothing in the Warren deeds that I've seen so far. Have you checked out the Warren County USgenweb site or actually Bute County site, since some of this would have been before Warren came into being which has abstracts of the Will Books there? It is a really good source of info for the County. Here is the link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncwarren/ (go to the section listed as NEW, and scroll down to the Abstracts) http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbute/ (Go to DATABASE and check out the Record and Deed Books, lots of good info) Good Luck.
