    1. [NCWARREN-L] DUKE - the various Green Dukes
    2. Sandy
    3. There seems to be an abundance of Green Dukes in Warren Co. Warren Co Will Book 13: Nov. Ct. 1805. Inv. Est. of GREEN DUKE, dec'd. (son of SIMON), by WILLIAM DUKE, Admr. Who was Simon Duke and does anyone know anything of this son, Green Duke? Presumably, this is not the same Green as the Green B. Duke who married (22 Oct 1806) Rebecca ROBERTSON. Or could the various Green Dukes have become confused? Many researchers show Green B. Duke as the son of a Green Duke & Mary Parham.....and grandson of a William Duke + Mary Green. (has anyone, per chance, found marriage records for William Duke to Mary Green, or Green Duke to Mary Parham?) I have no clue what anyone has to say about this Green Duke, son of Simon. Help! Thanks for any help/clarification. fyi, the household of Green B. Duke is enumerated as follows in Warren Co in 1850: 1850>>NC>>Warren Co>>Sandy Creek: page 4 (stamped) enumerated: 23 July 1850: #47 Green B. Duke, 69, farmer, val 848, b. NC Rebecca Duke, 68, b. NC Fanny Harrison, 40, (f), b. NC [note: next door at #48 is Elsy(Elzey) Hicks & family; Elzey Hicks md Elizabeth Henry Duke on 24 Jan 1838.] Does anyone know who the above "Fanny Harrison" (in Green B. Duke's 1850 household) was? Thanks, Sandy

    3. Hi everyone. A researcher emailed me on Maps for North Carolina, and I thought my answer might be of use to others since many people seem interested in this topic. Here are a few sites that might be of help. The first is for topographical maps which are referred to in an article at Ancestry.com. Ancestry has a lot of tips and links in their LEARNING CENTER that one can use to help them in their research. I suggest trying it out by searching through the center. For the maps just follow the link Under the heading FREE ONLINE TOPOGRAPHICAL MAPS after you read the section in the article that explains how to use it. http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/columns/eastman/1797.asp#3 Next, is a collection of old maps for North Carolina. Just scroll down, and click on the images to get them enlarged: http://www.georgehoward.net/tarheelmaps.htm Here is the Main Index to the site that lists many sites where images are available online: http://www.ihrinfo.ac.uk/maps/imageus.html#states Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps are available online. They have a few maps for North Carolina from the 19th century. This site does provide information about possible reconfiguration of your browser for access to the maps, which is a site from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, so I advise you to read it first to see if you want to do that: http://eresources.lib.unc.edu/eid/description.php?EIDID=861 (Click onto SANBORN MAPS NORTH CAROLINA) Here is a link to NORTH CAROLINA COUNTY FORMATION MAPS, which have clickable views of maps of NC from 1664 -1965. It does not contain any individual county maps, but it does give a good view of how the state formed during each year. http://www.segenealogy.com/northcarolina/nc_maps.htm A list of more recent maps for NC from the University of Texas at Austin might be of use to some: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/north_carolina.html By the way, the homepage for this site provides some interesting links for researching other things in North Carolina which you might want to check out. I use a GOOGLE.COM search many times when I wish to find possible research resources, so that's how I came across some of these sites. I would suggest looking through some of the above links to see if they may have something to offer that might help in your research. Good Luck. 3. I thought I'd pass this info along to some of the Mailing Lists which I think could be useful to those seeking Maps of the North Carolina area. The following link is to a site that was posted by someone some time ago, and I thought it might be a good idea to pass it along again since there may be new members who may not be aware of it. It is to a site that has scanned maps of each state in 1895, and North Carolina in particular. It has viewable and printable maps of each County that show some of the main areas of that county. http://www.livgenmi.com/nccounty.htm Deloris Williams

    2. Deloris Williams
    3. I saw this site several months ago on one of my Mailing Lists and have found it very useful. I thought I'd recommend it because for one, it is FREE, and because it has some really great info to help people understand some of the things they come across while researching. it is Southeastern Genealogy Online at http://www.segenealogy.com/ Among some of the best things this site has are Links to OLD MAPS MILITARY LINKS, that take you right to pages with descriptions of the various wars, and military campaigns. OLD ILLNESSES, a complete indexed database that describes exactly what those funny diseases our ancestors may have died from. This one alone is worth a visit, I use it all of the time. GENEALOGICAL ABBREVIATIONS, if you've ever wondered what some of those old abbreviations meant in documents, this is the place to check. It is indexed. GENERAL DESCRIPTIONS, tells you what is meant by some of those words or old terms used in old documents. I'll bet you all want to know what ADMINSTRATION CUM TESTAMENTO ANNEXO or even a REVERSE INDEX means. All of this is indexed also. There are other things there that others may find useful, and I recommend especially for those having difficulty understanding some of the things they come across while researching to take a look at this site. I think it's great. By the way, I have nothing to do with the owners of the site, and I don't even know who does own it, I'm recommending this site because I think it will help someone in their researches. 3. I'm looking for info on the following: Priscilla GREEN married SAMUEL LOWRY, Jan. 28, 1826 in Warren County, North Carolina. Samuel shows in 1830 Warren Co,NC, Shocco Dist. as Free Person of Color with 1 male = 10, 1 male =36 -55, 2 female= 10, 1 female = 24-36, 1 -female = 100+ . In 1850 Warren County, found- Prissy Lawry - age 53 - B - NC Sabrina " 24 " NC Cresy " 22 " NC Nancy " 18 " NC William " 17 " NC William Lowry was bound to Thomas Green in 1844. Two others who I suspect were from the same family were also bound, to William H. Bobbitt, in 1844, Zed and James. Priscilla next appears in the 1860 & and in 1870 Census as the head of household with her daughter,Sabrina's children. It appears that Priscilla was widowed about 1844 and that later her daughter had died, and Priscilla raised her grandchildren. Sabrina married MATTHEW GUY in Warren Co. on Dec. 10, 1850, but only appear in the 1860 Census in Warren Co. First, does anybody know what happened to the various Lowry/Lowery children? Second, does anybody know who Priscilla's parents were? I have my suspicions, but need confirmation. Thanks Deloris

    2. Deloris Williams
    3. Hi, I'm looking for any info on a female ancestor whom I only recently confirmed her relationship to my GREEN family. My GREEN's were listed as Free Colored People, Mulatto, or Black in the Census and they all lived in Warren County, North Carolina during the 1800's. She shows invariably in records as either of the three names above, but I suspect her entire name was Sabrina. Breny/Bryna was listed as BRIND GREEN when she married JAMES REED in Warren County, on Aug. 29, 1807. I have traced them to 1820 in Warren County under James Reed, and 1830 in Warren County, as James READ in the census, but have no further info on what happened to them. If anyone knows of these people, please contact me. Thanks. Deloris Williams

    3. Celeste, Your email is not accepting my messages, so here is my reply: Celeste, I checked all of the Somervilles in Warren County in 1900, but none had a Nat or Nathaniel. There were about half a dozen located in Vance County, the only other County that had Somervilles, so I checked them, but no luck. It is possible that he may have had a first name change and maybe that's why you can't find him. Sorry. The earliest census I have found Nathaniel is 1910; he is residing in Judkins with his wife Ann (nee Boyd). The 1920 and 1930 census reflect Nathaniel and family residing in Sixpound. I have no other data on Nathaniel regarding his siblings or parents. 3. Well, I am a volunteer doing the 1900 Warren County Look-ups for the Warren County Genweb Site from their CD. I do also happen to have a subscription to Genealogy.com for their Census Online collection which includes State indexed 1900, plus 1790 - 1930. The Genealogy.com census is searchable for 1790,1800,1810,1810,1870,1890(what there is of it),1900,and 1910. They offer a month's Online Census subscription for $19.99 and $99.99 for a year. In case anyone hasn't heard, Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com are now owned by the same company, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of their rates and databases are changed sometime in the near future.
