There were three 'mineral springs' resorts' in Warren County which were popular at various times during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Each had a hotel, a mineral spring for drinking and/or bathing, a ballroom or pavilion for dancing, and other amenities. Jones White Sulphur Spring was located in the far southern part of the county south of present day Elberon, and very close to the old Bute County courthouse, Jethro Sumner's tavern and old St. John's church, none of which are currently standing. I think Mrs. Lee and her daughters were staying there when Annie Carter Lee died, as she was buried in the Jones family graveyard. Just east of Jones Spring was Shocco Spring. Both of these springs were in the area which became Shocco Township. Panacea Spring came into popularity about a century later, and was located between Littleton and Airlie in Judkins Township. Jim
I would like to apologize about my lookup this morning. I have no excuse, but not looking carefully There 7 Jones Creeks. Here is where they are: 1. Avery Co 2. Buncombe Co 3. Jackson Co 4. Rockingham Co 5. Macon Co 6. Swain Co--it has two creeks named Jones Creek 7. Anson Co. --This one flows into Dee Dee River; There was also a PO named jones Creek in this county in1882 I am sorry! Becky
Check this site for a brief history of Warrenton: http://www.hsl.unc.edu/phpapers/warrenton01/whistory.htm They say: "There were also three major hot springs resorts that attracted the aristocracy from the coast when the weather became unbearable there. These were the Jones White Sulphur Springs Hotel, the Shocco Springs Hotel, and Panacea Springs. All hotels boasted elegant dinners and evenings with dancing and other leisurely pursuits. The springs reached their popular peak from around 1830 - 1850 (Sharpe, B. & Zarr, S.B., 1962)." -- Ann Avery Hunter Richmond, Virginia
I checked the NC Gazetteer for JONES SPRING and it is not listed. Panacea Springs is now owned by the Jones family and it could be known by some as Jones Springs. Caroline are your dates?
Caroline-- Possibly Jones Springs is another name for Panacea Springs, which was a well-known resort in the latter part of the nineteenth century. At one time the property included a hotel, which burned before I was born. In or after 1950 the property, including "the land, lake and springs" was sold to Mr. W. C. Jones, Jr., which might account for it being called Jones Springs. The location is about three miles south of Littleton, which was then in Warren Co. My information is from the book, Looking Back on Littleton, North Carolina, by Rebecca Leach Dozier; and my personal visits to that site where annual picnics were held. Tom Aiken
No problem. I had the books available and the information was there. Hi Nancy, I'm not working on this line but I may have a little info for you. From the 1755 Granville County, NC, Tax List, GEORGE RHOADS, 1 white poll From North Carolina Taxpayers, 1701-1786: GEORGE RHOADS - shows in Granville County in 1755 JOHN RHODES - Bute in 1771 JOHN RHODES & Son WILLIAM - in the area later known as Franklin/Warren/and Vance in 1771 Also in the 1771 Bute Co,NC Tax List: JOHN RHODES - with a total of 2 polls From the Muster Rolls of Granville County, taken October 8, 1754, in Col. William Eaton's Regiment under Capt. Richard Coleman's Company: GEORGE RHODES from "History and Genealogies of Old Granville County, NC, 1746-1800" by Thomas McAdory Owen, abstracts of wills and administrations: Thomas Perry. Admn. No bond or will on record. Inv. ret. by Gideon Macon, March 6, 1758: among other items: "1 pare of Gould Eare Rings, x 1 Ivory Comb x som(e) Tan Leather, a Sett of Shoemakers Tools." Id. p.39. Admr. ret. of sale of Mch 16, 1753; amt &11. 14. 4 1/2d; purchasers at sale: John and Gideon Macon, Abagall Jones, John Thornton, Mad'm. Eaton, GEORGE ROADS, Moses Myrick, Ephraim McLemore, Edward Holleman, James Nichols, Danl Pegram, Benj'a, Egerton, Coll'o. Wm. Person, Wm. Reed, Rich'd. Smith. Id. p. 40-1. Admr. Acct. ret. to Ct. June 19, 1759, Gideon Macon Ad'r. Id. p.70 It is possible that the John Rhodes was George's son, and that the father was dead or no longer in the county by 1771. Since Granville was the parent company of Bute, formed 1764 -1779, and later Warren,Franklin and Vance counties, you may also want to consider looking into the Granville records and checking out that site. As for other records for Rhodes, or any person you might be researching, I suggest you check out this link at the North Carolina State Archives, and click onto the MARS link on the middle left hand side of the page. Type in a search for your name and see what kind of records the Archives might have for your ancestor. http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/sections/archives/arch/default.htm Good Luck. Can anyone tell me if Jones Springs in Warren Co. was a town or just a resort? If not a town what town would have been close to it? Thank you, Caroline
Deloris, Thanks once more for all the help! You certainly had more at your finger tips than I did. I was right though when I said that some knowledgeable person would let us know what was available - and you came through! Nola
Nancy, Unfortunately, the court records you mentioned are about all we have other than Wills and Deeds. I believe the Wills and Deed abstracts for Bute are also online. Naturally for the Wills and Deeds, complete copies are available but I think the court records are pretty much as you see them. I am sure you know that Bute only existed for 15 years. Thanks to Mary Hinton Kerr and Brent Holcomb who did the Bute Co. records, we do have a lot of material but the court minutes are just that, very brief minutes of the court proceedings. Since there are people on the mailing list who are very knowledgeable about what is available, I am sure they can tell you if there are helpful records that I am not aware of but truth is I am afraid there is nothing more to be gleaned from the court minutes. Dear Warren County List, I'm trying to find my 4Xgrgrandfather who came to America, reportedly, in 1745. His son was found later in Buncombe county and the family pretty much stayed in that area. The man I'm looking for is named George Rhodes and I found a report on a 1770 Bute County court record that a group of men were approved by the court to do some road work. Among the names is that of a George Rhodes. Can anyone tell me how I can find more of the records of Bute County. Were they be any chance sent to either Warren or Franklin Counties when Bute was dissolved? Also, are there any listings of a George Rhodes in Warren County? I'm at the proverbial brick wall and any HELP would be much appreciated. My email address is omarolaf@sandtech.net. Nancy W. Huffman
I have information stating that Smith Abernathy married a Simms girl at Jones Springs Warren Co. Nc. in the late 1700's. I have seen a Jones Springs Hotel listed as a resort that was popular in Warren Co. I would like any information on this place if anyone has any. Caroline

North Carolina did not keep death (or birth) records until 1913 - so there would not be death records anywhere, unless there was a family Bible. Cemetery markers that early are unlikely to have carried any carving - if they are even extant. Best records concerning deaths are usually wills and/or estate records. Unfortunately, most property remained in the hands of fathers and husbands - so there aren't too many wills or estate records for women. But, those are your best bet. Court minutes are also helpful as they sometimes contain information concerning the settlement of a husband's and/or father's estate, the application for year's support, etc. -Sandy On Sunday, July 27, 2003, at 07:07 PM, Shirley wrote: > Hello all, > I'm a new subscriber and would like to know if anyone has access to > Warren Co. death records (1820) to do a look-up or could tell me where > to find them on the internet?
